Emilio Sánchez Vicario: "It would be a blow not to have Nadal in the Davis Cup team"

On October 8th 2005, Emilio Sánchez Vicario was appointed the new Spanish Davis Cup captain in place of the "G2", Jordi Arrese and Juan Avendaño.

Have you fully adapted to your new post?
Being captain of the Davis Cup team is different from training a player. You have to keep tabs on a large group of tennis players. I've tried to keep in touch with all of them to find out what's been happening in the pre season. I also think it's important to have an understanding with the trainers - I need direct communication with them.

I expect you remember the fuss there was about your appointment and the former captains not continuing with the G2 formula. Did you accept Pedro Muñoz's offer right off?
The way the things were, it was impossible to accept at once. But any professional would be thrilled to sit on the bench as captain of the Spanish team. I hope to use my experience to help repeat the results we have had in recent years.

Your first task as captain will be to choose the four players to go to Belarus for the first round of the World Group (10th, 11th and 12th February). Have you decided on the four yet?
It is going to depend a lot on whether or not I can count on Rafael Nadal. He still hasn't recovered from his injury and it will be yet another handicap if he doesn't go to Australia.

What will happen if Nadal cannot play?
Well, it would be a blow not to have him in the first Davis Cup match. Rafa is the world's number two and his presence on court and what it means to an opponent to have to face him is not news to anybody. He is also the one who had the best indoors results last season. He is the leader of the team and carries the others along with him.

Is a win in Belarus possible without Nadal?
Spanish tennis has the good fortune to have eight quality players that are likely to be called on to play in the team at any moment. We mustn't forget that David Ferrer, Juan Carlos Ferrero and Tommy Robredo are in the ATP top twenty. In fact, Ferrer has already defeated Max Mirnyi on carpet in París and Robredo also has a head-to-head advantage over the Belarus number one. This round ought to be taken as a great opportunity for the up and coming players who have not already played important Davis Cup matches.

Carlos Moyá won't travel to Minsk, either. Have you talked to him about his future participation in the Davis Cup?
Yes, yes, at the moment Charly has four players ahead of him in the ranking and has to establish himself again. If he keeps on the ascendancy, and his shoulder lets him, I'm sure that later on he'll bring the Spanish team lots of things to smile about.

Since you and Sergio Casal retired, there has not been a dependable doubles pair in the Davis Cup. Have you worked out how to solve this problem?
It all depends on there being stable doubles pairs on the professional circuit. That's what I want, they also need to want that. I understand that they concentrate more on the singles, but there are sufficent weeks in the year to alternate the two. Ten tournaments together would be enough for them to have mutual understanding on court. If there is not a more or less stable doubles pair, you can't expect them to beat the Bryan brothers in the Davis Cup. Playing matches half way up the court is going to help them to serve better...

Have you got a doubles partnership in mind for Belarus?
Well, last year in Cincinnati Robredo and Ferrer showed that they can play well. Feli López and Fernando Verdasco are a more established pair because they have played plenty of matches together. This latter pair are also going to play doubles together at the Australian Open.

Your opponents have announced that the playing surface will be Taraflex.
We knew that they were going to put us on something really fast.
