info from official site before match :

{In the match of the day fifth seed Mario Ancic of Croatia can expect plenty of support again as he takes on British hope Andy Murray.

It's a match Ancic is cautious about.

"I watch him (Murray) a little bit. He's obviously a great talent. It's going to be a challenge and hopefully a good match again. I will have to be focused on my game," said Ancic.

Ancic is one of the world's biggest servers while Murray isn't too bad either but when it comes to the pressure of the moment the Croatian may have too much nerve.}

01-11-2006, 07:21 AM
OK, you know the score but here the BBC News piece. :wavey: Great news!!!!! :woohoo:

Associated Press
Ancic Beats Murray at Heineken Open
01.11.2006, 12:07 AM

Croatian Mario Ancic beat Scottish teenager Andy Murray 6-3, 7-6 (4) on Wednesday in the second round of the Heineken Open.

The fifth-seeded Ancic won the first set in 36 minutes, then gained a service break in the first game of the second as his young opponent struggled to control his serve.

Murray trailed 3-1 in the second set before winning four straight games, earning a chance to serve for the set. He double faulted on his only set point, did it again in losing his serve and allowed Ancic to even the set and then take the match with a single mini-break in the tiebreaker.

"I had a lot of chances," Murray said. "I gave myself chances to beat a player who's played well in Grand Slams and won the Davis Cup and I should have taken them.

"He's way more experienced than me but I've got to start winning these matches and I think that will happen soon."

Murray showed some outstanding skills, hitting powerfully from the baseline and using a serve-and-volley game in the middle of the second set. But he was also erratic.

He gave up his serve meekly in the sixth game of the first set, allowing Ancic the only service break of the set, then put himself under pressure when he lost serve again in the opening game of the second set.

Murray had six break points in the fourth game of the set, but Ancic saved serve with two booming aces and it wasn't until the sixth game, and his eighth break point, that the Scot broke back.

Ancic, who led Croatia to the Davis Cup last month, didn't produce his best tennis but held his nerve on crucial points to advance to the next round.

The 21-year-old Croatian described his match with the 18-year-old Murray as "a great match between young guys."

"It was an extremely tough match and in the first set the conditions were difficult and both of us were struggling on serve," Ancic said. "Hopefully, I'm on a good run now."

Second-seeded David Ferrer of Spain preceded Ancic into the quarterfinals Wednesday, beating qualifier Raemon Sluiter of the Netherlands 6-4, 6-3. Ferrer had two breaks to one in the first set and a single break in the second, clinching the match in 70 minutes.

I hope you don't mind the Murray quotes. :wavey:

01-11-2006, 10:44 AM
I love that when they talk about Mario now he isn't a "promising young talent" but "a player who's played well in Grand Slams and won the Davis Cup" :hearts: I'm so proud! :D

btw, i dont think Andy M said anyting silly  he just said what he thought and he was right, to control the volley and the baseline is really the key to beat Mario at least at present

01-11-2006, 03:25 PM
Nice job Mario :bigclap:

But now comes the real test

01-11-2006, 03:27 PM
Gonzalez has one of the tournament's hottest players to beat today if he is to successfully defend. Fifth seed Mario Ancic of Croatia has become one of the ATP's fastest-rising stars since his Davis Cup heroics.

Ancic is very mindful of Gonzalez's pure groundstrokes off either hand and knows he cannot back off. "I have played him three times," he says (2-1 Gonzalez, most recent to Ancic). "He has a very powerful game, so I must try to stay aggressive."

I know we know that he's the hottest, but that they admit that he's the best looking player on the off.site...

It took Ancic less than an hour to dismantle the usually composed game of the defedning champion.

Ancic broke the Chileans serve on three ocassions to take the first set and when he broke in the fifth game of the second it was all but over.

OK, here's the snippet from Reuters about the match.
Top seed Gonzalez ousted by Ancic in Auckland
Thu Jan 12, 2006 4:44 AM GMT

WELLINGTON, Jan 12 (Reuters) - Top seed Fernando Gonzalez was thrashed 6-0 6-3 in the quarter-finals of the Auckland Open by fifth seed Mario Ancic on Thursday.

Croatia's Ancic dominated the world number 11 from the outset with a booming service game but Chilean Gonzalez did not help his own cause in the 19-minute first set with a string of unforced errors.

The pair stayed on serve in the second set before Ancic broke in the sixth game to give him a 4-2 lead, which was more than enough for him to close out the match and set up a semi-final clash with Swiss qualifier Stanislas Wawrinka.

OK, one more nice NZ article about the match.

Champion bundled out in extra quick time
12 January 2006

Croatian Mario Ancic upended top seed and defending champion Fernando Gonzalez to silence his vocal Chilean supporters at the Heineken Open men's tennis tournament in Auckland today.

Fifth seed Ancic advanced to tomorrow's semifinals with a surprisingly easy 6-0 6-3 victory against Gonzalez, who complained of a shoulder injury.

Ancic raced through the first set in just 17 minutes to lay the platform for his victory.

A former Wimbledon semifinalist, Ancic praised Gonzalez and said after the surprise of the first set he knew he could not afford to become complacent.

"Fernando has an unbelievable game and as you can see in the second set tennis can change in a minute," Ancic said after the match.

"I was really happy I finished it off and you aren't given too many chances with high quality players like Fernando,"

"When I saw he was struggling I forced him ... tried to break his rhythm."

Gonzalez said he had been bothered by shoulder pain he felt during practice this morning, but he praised Ancic's performance.

"Mario played really good - his serve, his return - he is a good fighter."

He said after his performances in the past two days he thought he could defend his title, but "that's tennis".

Gonzalez said despite his early tournament dismissal he would return again next year for his sixth year in succession.

Ancic will play unseeded Stanislas Wawrinka in the semifinals after the Swiss player today recorded a straightforward 6-3 6-4 win over German Florian Mayer.

Oh, some more nice quotes from Mario.

Ancic knocks defending champion Gonzalez out at Heineken Open
Jan. 12, 2006

AUCKLAND, New Zealand -- Croatia's Mario Ancic swept top-seeded and defending champion Fernando Gonzalez 6-0, 6-3 in the Heineken Open on Thursday.

Ancic lost only eight points in the first set. Gonzalez mounted a comeback in the second but blew five break points in two games and eventually surrendered his serve in the sixth game to lose the match in 54 minutes.

Gonzalez won last year's Auckland title without losing a set and was on his way to duplicating the feat before he lost a set to love for the first time in his ATP career.

"I played extremely well," Ancic said. "The second set could have gone either way. There were many break points for each side and it was important for me to keep up a good run and not let him get back into the match.

"It was amazing for me. After 6-0 I just wanted to keep going but he's an unbelievable player, he can always come back and it was important just to keep focused and keep playing my game."

Ancic, who hasn't lost a set in the tournament, said his win over Gonzalez had given him confidence for his next match and his next major assignment.

"The Australian Open is starting next week," he said. "That's an unbelievable goal to have and with results like this I'm in good shape."

Ancic will face Stanislas Wawrinka of Switzerland in the semifinals on Friday. Wawrinka beat Florian Mayer of Germany 6-3, 6-4 on Thursday.

Ancic Reaches Grand Finale

Fifth seeded Croatian, Mario Ancic has won through to the final of the 2006 Heineken Open beating unseeded Stanilas Wawrinka of Switzerland 6-3 6-1.

The match played in front of a capacity crowd filled with Croatian supporters was played in fine conditions.

Ancic, who is ranked at 21 in the world will play in his fifth final tomorrow. He was too strong for his opponent who made too many unforced errors.

"It was extremely tough match. I was just trying to be aggressive. I was lucky enough to play really aggressive and that was my main goal," said Ancic

He will now play either sixth seed Olivier Rochus of Belgium or seventh Jarkko Nieminen* of Finland in tomorrow's final.

*Jarkko won

And here the quotes from NZ if you like. :)

Ancic powers into final

Jan 13, 2006
By Alan Granville at the ASB Tennis Centre in Auckland

Big serving Mario Ancic proved too strong for Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka as the Croat romped into the Heineken Open final with a 6-3 6-1 victory.

The fifth seed was roared on by a large Croat support on centre court as Ancic took just under one hour and 20 minutes to reach his fifth career ATP final.

While the scoreline may look convincing Wawrinka, the world number 57, did not disgrace himself in just his second semifinal ever.

After the match Ancic paid tribute to his unseeded opponent.

"It was a great match. The score may look easy but it was a very tough match. First set we had a break, a re-break and a break again. In the second set as well he has some break points and I managed to save them. I think he played some really good tennis," said the Croat.

"I was happy with the execution of my game plan. I was pleased with the way I played with my aggression."

Neither player had lost a set on their way to the semifinals but Ancic, the world number 21, was the overwhelming favourite after despatching number one seed and defending champion Fernando Gonzalez in the quarterfinals.

Both players held their opening serves nervously in the blistering heat on centre court but it was Ancic who made the first break in the fourth game.

The big serving and accurate net play was proving too much early on for the Swiss; however Wawrinka showed he could make some telling passing shots in breaking the Croat in the seventh game.

However all the good work was undone in the next game when Ancic raced back into a 5-3 lead and he held his serve for an opening set win in 45 minutes.

The second set continued Ancic's dominance and he broke twice for a 4-1 lead.

A double fault at 0-30 handed the Croat three match points and he duly despatched it to set up a final against either Olivier Rochus or Jarkko Nieminen.

"Both of those are very strong. I practised many times with them. They are very fast at taking the ball early," said Ancic.

The final will be shown live on TV ONE with streaming here on tvnz.co.nz.

If you want some sad reading.

Nieminen makes it fifth time lucky with Auckland victory
Sat Jan 14, 2006 3:31 AM GMT

WELLINGTON, Jan 14 (Reuters) - Finland's Jarkko Nieminen won a first ATP tour title in his fifth final with a 6-2 6-2 victory over Croatian number five seed Mario Ancic at the Auckland Open on Saturday.

Ancic, the world number 21, had been the hot favourite for the title after the 24-year-old Finn had needed almost three hours to beat Olivier Rochus in the semi-finals late on Friday.

Nieminen had lost four previous finals at Stockholm (2001), Estoril, Mallorca (both 2002) and Munich (2003), but the seventh seed was rarely troubled by Ancic, who struggled throughout with his forehand and serve.

The 24-year-old Finn got his first break in the third game and never allowed the uncomfortable-looking Ancic to settle.

He broke again in the seventh game and served out for the set in 27 minutes.

Nieminen broke Ancic twice again in the second set and served out for the match. (Writing by Greg Stutchbury in Melbourne)

01-14-2006, 09:08 AM
 that's so disappointing of course :awww: But still a good week with four great matches

what he said after the match:
"I played four unbelievable matches and I was feeling good and confident but today nothing really worked  It was very tough playing an opponent who doesn't miss. You have to give credit to Jarkko, he served well and played well."

"I was a little bit flat, I don't know the reason." :awww:

"It was a great week getting to the final and beating some tough opponents, I am happy with the way that I played but I will look at the positives from this week."

01-14-2006, 10:56 AM
Mario just wasn't himself in this match :awww:

01-14-2006, 11:06 AM
Yeah, it just wasn't his day!!!!!! :( :(  Too bad it happens with him on the days of the finals. And of course Jarkko played really well.
I hope Mario can get over it and concentrate on the AO now. :D There's a day for rest and preparation.

01-14-2006, 11:41 AM
I saw some inserts, I couldn't watch it last night, a friend of mine taped it for me, now I'm affraid to watch it

I'm not that disappointed (of course I'm very sad, but it's not the end of the world) 'cause he's playing well these days, and seems he isn't either, he realizes that N. just played better on this occasion.
I think he'll pull himself together and hopefully have a good run at AO :D

01-14-2006, 03:16 PM
If really need me to say something about his lost, OK, thanks to him for Jarkko's first title, if they were good friends, i would turn moved while when i cheered for dear Jarkko with his girl in my life, some tears falling down in my heart, to tell the truth, i hate the feeling of that kind which upsets myself at the first time, but since it has been on, well, i can find many reasons to comfort myself, and maybe one day later, i can put myself together into AO, wish that would pay back this.

01-14-2006, 03:18 PM
 poor mario! i guess we gotta look at the positives..

01-14-2006, 05:11 PM
Mario for Croatian newspapers:

''Nothing, I mean nothing was going my way today. I coldn't go to the net, couldn't be agressive, everythig that I did well in previous matches, I just couldn't repeat today.

Of course that it would have been better if I had won today, but I leave Auckland confident. A small problem is that I'll arrive to Melbourne little less than 24 hours before my first match, but I feel confident and think that I'm in good form. Even with the lost final.''

Abt A. Calleri:

''We've never played before, what I've heard of him is that he plays beautiful tennis and that it's a pleasure to watch him. He's not typical Argentine, he plays on every surface, but I hope I'll win.''

Abt DC captain:

''It's not a secret, you know my choice. I claimed and before this all (that's going on) that Goran is the best solution for us, he knows us extremely well and, in my opinion, it would function the best if he was with us. I agreed with Ivan that we'll sit and talk in Melbourne, to see if we can do sth to make Goran change his mind. I still think it's the best solution.''

01-14-2006, 05:46 PM
Thanks for the quotes lovemario.
