ST. PETERSBURG (Reuters) - Marat Safin's comeback bid suffered another blow Tuesday when the former world number one slumped to a first-round defeat at the St. Petersburg Open.

Safin, who has not won a match on the ATP Tour since April, lost to Spaniard Fernando Vicente, ranked number 60 in the world, 6-7, 6-4, 6-3.

The eighth-seeded Russian, who has been dogged by fitness problems, blamed lack of confidence for his early exit in front of his home crowd.

"The biggest problem for me is that I don't have any confidence in my game at the moment," said the 23-year-old former U.S. and Australian Open (news - web sites) champion, adding that he had all but given up on improving this year.

"I can't do much this year anymore, so I just look forward to a new season and hope things will be different for me then."

Anyway, here's an interview w/ Marat after his yesterday from gazeta.ru. Thanks to Mariam for the translation. :)

St. Petersburg Open’s 2 time champion Marat Safin lost in the first round to the Spaniard Fernando Vicente. Just a year ago this kind of a result would’ve been a sensation. But don’t forget that Safin has just returned from a long break because of injuries. One of gazeta.ru journalists spoke to Marat after the match:

Was there a chance today to beat your opponent?
He’s not Agassi! Of course there was a chance to decide the outcome of the match with one shot in the second set. I won the first set with a tie-break, and on the second it was 4-4, 40-15 on the Spaniard’s serve. Didn’t pressure enough, and now am regretting it. And in the third set my strength wasn’t enough.

Does the hand still hurt, or was it that you just aren’t prepared as far as your optimal physical conditions are concerned?
No it’s something different. Half a year without tennis has had its toll. It’s tough for me to get into a playing rhythm, and my opponents have been performing all year non-stop, and they don’t have that kind of problems.

There is an opinion that the victory in the Davis Cup took away from you as well as other participants on the Russian team a lot of emotional strength...
The strengths came back right after the banquet in Paris. But we practically didn’t have time for rest. The final in Bercy was weeks before the start of the new season. Maybe I shoud’ve sacrificed the tournaments before the Australian Open, but when my participation in those tournaments were being decided, there was no guarantee that we were going to be playing for the ‘Silver Salad Bowl’. (lol)

After working with Mats Wilander, Andrei Chesnakov, Alexander Volkov, you chose someone that’s basically the same age as you, Denis Golovanov...
It is very hard to find an experienced coach who’ll agree to travel with and to train even a cool guy like myself (lol) for about 40 tournaments all over the world throughout the year. People who have played on the ATP tour have earned enough to last them a lifetime and after their careers are over they prefer to dedicate their time to their family.

But aren’t there any problems in the relationship with someone who is the same age as you when it comes to obeying to him during the practices/trainings?
In the trainer-athlete chain everything depends on the latter. If you understand that something is necessary, you’ll obey to someone who is even 10 years younger than you.

Was there an option to work with a foreign coach/specialist?
It’s even harder with them. A different mentality, a different view on life. And why does everyone think that Golovanov is a bad coach?! We’ll see what you say after I start winning!

Wasn’t it too early to come back to the court? And maybe it would’ve been better to play the first matches outside of Russia...
There were some nuances of that which shouldn’t be paid attention to. And as the saying goes, ‘At home, even the walls help.’

In St. Petersburg, you’re continuing to play in doubles with Irakle Labadze. Last year this duet played in the finals. Is there a goal like that this year?
I consider doubles a unique kind of practice. I can acquire the form I’m looking for, work on my shots. Everything like in sparring(?) only there is a score. And you also get prize money.

It seems to me that during this prolonged absence you have lost some weight...
Yes, there is a problem like that. And it affects the power of the shots.

All the participants of St. Petersburg Open praise the player restaurant. Maybe, on the shores of Neva (**a river in St Petersburg**) you’ll be able to get back all that you’ve missed...
No, I haven’t set a goal like that. Do I really look worse than the photo models who pay attention to every additional kilogram?

During the time of your absence from the court, you haven’t gotten rid of the habit to break the innocent rackets...
Well, what can you do? There have to be some trivial shortcomings even in me, right?

Shadow

its true, Marat and Labaze gave their opponents a walkover. Probably because Marat wants to fly directly to Paris Bercy, i guess. And he also had problems with blisters on his feet in his singles match. Should be better like that.

article from eurosport.com --->

Safin out of Paris Masters

Russia's Marat Safin has withdrawn from next week's Paris Masters due to right foot blisters, organizers said on Thursday. The withdrawal of the defending champion allows France's Arnaud Clement direct acceptance into the main draw leaving his wildcard available for another player.

Safin, who won the Paris Masters in Bercy in 2000 as well as last year, has been plagued by wrist and ankle problems for most of 2003.

The BNP Paribas Masters organizers have decided to award the wild card to rising French sensation Richard Gasquet.

This young player, currently under the hands of Roddick's former coach Tarik Benhabiles, will take part in his first ever Paris Masters where he will try to impress his home crowd.

The final draw sees five French players including Sebastien Grosjean, Arnaud Clement, Paul Henri Mathieu and the magician, Fabrice Santoro.

It`s a dissapointment, but its surely better for him to give this season an end NOW and also better for us ... ;)
He just hasnt yet the match thoughness and it doesnt make sense to play like that and especially in Paris (where he loves to play so much) as a defending champ and then probably loose in the first round would be really heartbreaking.
So the positive thing is that he has now enough time to prepare himself well for 2004, (not like last year) gain weight and muscles, get back the body fitness... etc. forget this terrible year soon, and come back strong for 2004 :) :D

of course its sad now for us more than 2 months without marat...!

but hey Ilhame, i`m sure we will find a way to let this place living though ;)

Two more months without Marat... I'll have to work too much ;) ... I'll miss him.
But I think it's the best for him now. Jesus, what a terrible year... I love tennis, but will be hard for me to watch next tournaments... it's really boring without Marat.
Hope 2004 can be an excellent year for him and his fans. :)

I would like to see Ferrero or Rogi finishing as Nr 1. I think they both deserve it!

THanks Andrea.

The pic at net is very nice. Marat as usual very gracious after defeat.
