Well, you can't compare the contexts of tennis tour and of the motor cycle race. Tom became this year's world champion in his category, and that's the title what his competitors were also aiming for... It is hard to say if 2 Grand Slam tournaments, year end number 1 in tennis, and his other achievements are greater than being motor cycle champion. The two sports are so different.

Well, 50% of the whole votes were from the Swiss sports journalists and 50% was from the viewers votes via telephon. According to a report, Roger got more votes than Tom and Stephane from the journalists actually, but more votes from the viewers went to Tom. And the young 19 year old motor cyclist won the award at the end.

But glad to see he and Mirka were there and looking so nice too. And what a gentleman to stand up and shake Tom's hand when he was annouced the winner. :)

Thanks for all the information Stevens :)

I guess people are bored with the same face every year, so time for a change :p No big deal, but again when Roger clapped his hands for the winner and got up shaking hands with him, I sensed another moment of the old generation encouraging the young  ;)

Seems like the Swiss are already taking Rogi a little bit for granted -- he DID have another stellar year by anyone's standards -- but I guess they felt they couldn't have him win 3 years in a row but he may never be at such a high again.

That's what I was wondering too. He'd be Sir Roger by now if he was British :lol:Oh goodness...can you imagine if he was a Brit? I guess maybe in some ways he's an honoroary Brit. I certainly get the sense that the people and the media love him over there. I remember his first round this year. I was listening to Radio 5 broadcast live and Des Lynman and crew were all giddy when talking about him. And they kept going on about his haircut.

Minnie
12-19-2005, 11:07 PM
We're all pretty giddy about Rogi over here Mirkaland. When he walked onto the Centre Court on the opening day at Wimby this year, you could just feel the love the crowd had for him - it wasn't just respect for a great player. And it looked to me that Rogi sensed it too. He seems to have been taken to our hearts in a way that Pete Sampras never really was. Us Brits don't just appreciate his wonderful tennis but also his courteousness to one and all and the fact that he's so accessible to everyone. He apparently spent a lot of time signing autographs and chatting to the staff at Wimbledon after the final. The only criticism I've ever heard was from John Lloyd who said "He's just so nausiatingly nice"

nobama
12-20-2005, 12:36 AM
I heard to that he did some Wimbledon intro/promo for Radio 5 which no other top player could find the time to do. And supposedly he messed up the first time and was asked if he would do it again and he said yes, of course. Then during the womens semis when there were rain delays he came by and gave interviews to help the world broadcasters fill time. What's not to love about the guy? He's way more accessible to the press than Sampras or any other top player ever was. And it seems genuine, not like he's faking it because he wants people to like him. During RG, Wimbledon and US Open I saw Roger being interviewed more than any other player. And during RG one of the ESPN commentators said (after an interview with Roger) that he was by far the most considerate top player they've ever worked with. I've heard that the ESPN crew really likes him.

SUKTUEN
12-20-2005, 03:29 PM
But it is only 30 % vote Roger, this kid has 46 %~

Why?

lsy
12-21-2005, 03:18 PM
and nobody should ever ridicule ESPN for not naming Rogi the best sportsman ever again... :tape: ;)

Rogi  I hope he's not too disappointed though I'm sure he will be, after all it is kind of awkward if he's winning all these best sportsman awards elsewhere in the world but not his homecountry.

But it's ok Rogi, it's just human nature, people get bored/take it for granted and like to support the new faces sometimes...I only wish he continues to find the motivation to work hard for the next few years :)

now...COME ONNNNNN Swiss...you have Roger! How lucky you are and how well had he been representing Switzerland all over the world...give him more love!!!

Ok I'm just kidding here as I have no idea what has the other winner achieved during the year so he may just be as deserving for this award.

But I'm not kidding about giving Rogi more love though

lsy, as a Swiss I have to agree with your comments  , this quote was my answer to Brenda, a british fan on rf.com

Brenda:
If I thought like some Swiss voters I would recommend banning Roger from Wimbledon and giving the title to Roddick After all, Roger has won it 3 times. And how about doing the same for the USO title because Roger has won it twice Good grief, Pete Sampras should never have been allowed in the gates, grossly unfair to other players.

How on earth can it be "someone else's turn" or "let's have a change"? What happened to merit and judging by the scale of the achievement? It's a sorry comment on Swiss mentality. And naturally, I've already seen a headline "Federer beaten at last" and the tone of the article was that the Swiss have lost interest in him

JMPower:
Brenda, I'm afraid I have to totally agree with your comments !! It is incredible for example, to see the swiss folk after the win of Alhingi's boat in the America's Cup, everyone here enjoyed that a lot and was proud !! But after Roger's wins at Wimbledon, only Basel his hometown made a special event, only a few people cared !!!

I know that swiss folk is not a sport folk AT ALL, but sometimes it falls too down, they seem to forget that Roger gives more to Switzerland's image than any other human being !!

I saw his interview with Sue Barker on that rainy Thursday afternoon - very sweet - she was clearly bowled - couldn't stop grinning and smiling at him! And the piece the BBC did when they took him on a tour of their camera rooms was good too. Interesting that you said no other player would do a Wimbledon promo interview for Radio 5 - because I head that no other top player would do a TV interview for the BBC either before the tourny started - except Rogi of course. One classic thing he said, which always makes me laugh when I remember it "My girlfriend likes to cook and I like to eat, so we're a good match" :haha:

JM - I'm really sorry to read that you think the Swiss are taking Rogi for granted ... they should realise that a tennis players life is a relatively short one. I only hope he gets the Swiss of the Year award again to make up for it! (Not sure when that takes place). He's personal style makes him a great ambassador for your country regardless of what sport he plays.

At that kids tennis event in Biel (before the Sports Awards) one of the kids asked Roger when he was getting married or something like that. He replied:
Geplant ist nichts, aber vielleicht ist es ja an der Zeit.I believe when translated to english that means: "nothing is planned, however, perhaps it is time". I thought that was an interesting answer...

The answer sounds mysterious.

I hope they don't feel rushed by anyone. That should be their decision.

We should wait and be ready to congratulate them :)
