A Magical Tour Down Under - Auckland and the Oz Open

Nico's fitness coach, Horacio A., said Nico wouldn't be 100% for the Auckland tournament but he would be for the Oz Open...so I figured I would put both in one thread.

I know its early...but again, I miss our Nico... :bigcry: Especially the pictures of him practicing shirtless... ;)

Nah, It's 11.37 for me and I saw the draw..
Nico got Hrbaty in 1st round! That sucks..
Let's wait and see if Nico can handle it with no pressure..
VAMOS!!

NicoFan
01-07-2006, 01:45 PM
Yup, Alonso, not a great draw.

Maybe he'll be psyched because he'll have to play Hrbaty in Davis Cup in a few weeks. Of course this is hardcourt and that will be clay so huge difference.

But if he does beat Hrbaty, he'll probably have to play Acasuso. I think Jose is definitely beatable, but will he have the confidence to think so is another matter.

Main Draw

(1) Fernando Gonzalez (CHI)[/B] vs (Q)
(Q) vs Wesley Moodie (RSA)

Kenneth Carlsen (DEN) vs Andy Murray (GBR)
(WC) Mark Nielsen (NZL) vs (5) Mario Ancic (CRO)

(3) Robby Ginepri (USA) vs Alberto Martin (ESP)
Tomas Zib (CZE) vs Stanislas Wawrinka (SUI)

(WC) Daniel King (NZL) vs Florian Mayer (GER)
Robin Vik (CZE) vs (8) Feliciano Lopez (ESP)

(7) Jarkko Nieminen (FIN) vs Marcos Baghdatis (CYP)
Filippo Volandri (ITA) vs Paul Goldstein (USA)

Christopher Rochus (BEL) vs Jose Acasuso (ARG)
Nicolas Massu (CHI) vs (4) Dominik Hrbaty (SVK)

(6) Olivier Rochus (BEL) vs Albert Montañes (ESP)
(Q) vs Andrei Paverl (ROM)

(Q) Danielle Bracciali (ITA)
(Q) vs (2) David Ferrer (ESP)

Not an easy 1st round :) But good luck Nico - we must believe!

I agree Rosie. With Nico's current ranking we couldn't expect a great draw even though we always hope for one. Nico has his work cut our for him but I know he's up to it-he did well in last weeks exhibition and I expect he will build on that. VAMOS to Nico!!!

NicoFan
01-07-2006, 07:52 PM
Thinking about it more, and I saw that Hrbaty just lost to someone named Serra (know the name but not familiar with him ), I think that if Nico gets really psyched and plays with a lot of passion, he has a chance.

Hrbaty must be tired - he kept playing after the regular season ended so he would be ready for DC, played in the DC finals, so he hasn't had much of an offseason rest.

Vamos Nico!!!!!!!!!

And I agree with you, not a nice first round but this is another year and we've to be confident and possitives with Nico, now you're all saying that he has a good chance so hopefully Hrbaty will be tired or something but the most important thing is to see Nico playing with confidence and showing his talent again so Vamos Nico!!!! :rocker2:

From Radio Cooperativa - an interview with Nico after the match. :)

The number two of Chile related that modified his strategy to be able to defeat for the first time al Slovak, its rival one in the Cup Davis matches in February next. "I have many more chances in clay", said.

The Slovak Dominik Hrbaty (15º) was one of the black beasts of Nicolas Massú (65º) in the circuit and the Chilean knew that he should do somewhat special to defeat it in the first round of the ATP of Auckland and on the New Zealand hardcourts he found the formula.

"I changed my tactic and I did him as never. I was perfect, but with a new strategy, striking with slice (effect of the ball when is struck upper downward. The characteristic is that is a defensive shot and with very little sting), that never used it and it did not improve. To conquer to Hrbaty had to do it and resulted me well because is a shot that not management and left me to the perfection", said Massú in statements to Al Air Free in Cooperative.

Massú was imposed for 6-2 and 6-4 to Hrbaty and will play the quarterfinals of the contest before the Belgian Christophe Rochus (44º).

"I did not win any player neither, not only by the fact that we will play with him in February, but because is one of the better in the ranking, comes to play the end of the Davis Cup and is in a great moment", maintained Massú.

The viñamarino clarified that will be very different when in front to Hrbaty between the 10 and 12 of February in the Crescent of Rancagua: "This has nothing to do with the Davis Cup because is a special pressure. They will have 14 thousand people... in another court, in clay and playing for the country".

"If I beat him in hardcourts, I have many more chances in clay. It is a good one deliver immediately, but one must be careful because does not signify that be insured the triumph", added.

Massú commented that felt very well physically: "I ran a lot and I felt well. Hrbaty is a rival very hard one, that hits a lot and I am very I please because never he had earned him before. In an only they parted I showed that I am with an incredible confidence".

It consulted if will continue with the same strategy, the double Olympic champion indicated: "I changed a little the tactic, but play of fund is going to be always the same one. Rochus plays quite different to Hrbaty, removes less and perhaps is more talented. The tennis is a sport from day by day and all can change a lot of".

Massú also dedicated a paragraph to his harmful campaign 2005: "All last year was with injuries. I arrived Monday or Tuesday and did not know if could play because hurt me here or there. In general me did not feel well and could not stop for the matter of the ranking. The holidays was the best than me could pass".

Nico did do great in Auckland, and I'm very proud of him.

From what I've heard, he's got to work on his backhand, but that's always been his weak spot (kind of like Andy).

The score was 3-6, 6-7 (4). He was almost breaking Jarkko, couldn't quite do it, then had one bad game, and boom, there went the 1st set. But he fought back hard in the 2nd set.

Onward to the Oz Open!

Jarkko broke Nico in that crucial 7th game, it was a bad call... (I personally thought it was in but no). I think he lost his concentration from there and lost the set but almost brought it back to one set all in the 2nd... but still, he played fantastically well!!! There's still the doubles with Gonzo against the Rochus brothers tonight...

Auckland has really enjoyed having him here and I hope he comes back :p

Even though Nico lost tonight like everyone I'm happy how he did in Auckland. It sounds like he's playing well and with confidence that is what important. Very proud how he fought and didn't give up-as Conita said he is coming back to what he used to be before the injuries! Couldn't ask more of him!

And thanks again Angelical for all your reports! Its great to know Nico is appreciated in your country!

(a later report from Angelical on Fena's board says that the chicos pulled out of the doubles match due to an injury of Fena's-shoulder. Hope all will be well with Fena.)

Guess I can only add to what everyone else is saying. I am sad that Nico lost - but generally happy with his overall performance in Auckland. Jarkko is a good player - it is no disgrace to lose to him, and the score was close. Good Luck in Melbourne Nico

Here's an interview with him in Radio Cooperativa:

The number two national declared his match by the rout before the Finnish Jarkko Nieminen, in QFs of Auckland, who in his judgment "played better in the important moments".

The Chilean Nicolas Massú (65º) finished sad the encounter before the Finnish Jarkko Nieminen (29º), therefore in his judgment he was scarce the difference between him and the player that conquered him for 6-3 and 7-6 (4).

"The truth is that I played well and the other he played better, there is not nothing but to say. I mistook me three times and I lost the match, he was a he break in all the match and the truth he is that that was what happened", indicated the viñamarino in dialogue with Gonzalo Prada in Auckland, for Al Air Free in Cooperative.

Beyond the rout, Massú was shown satisfied with the to reborn that had in New Zealand, where broke a gust of wind of six falls in the first consecutive round, what finished 2005.

"When you are with physical problems and in pain is not easy to play. Now I am healthy and the thing changes. In this level all the players are difficult and today (Wednesday, Thursday in New Zealand) I lost a very tight match that also I could have won, but I did not win because he played better in the important moments. But I am very tranquil", maintained. (Cooperative.cl)

Absolutely no excuse for this loss. None.

I'm not cold hearted. I've followed Nico since the 2002 US Open, and I rarely get mad at him when he loses.

Nico was handed a first round gift by the tennis gods. Gilles Simon is ranked 100+ in the world and spends 95% of his time playing challengers.

No excuses in 2006. He is in shape, he has no injuries, and he has a great team around him.

How he could lose the first two sets is a mystery to me. How he can be up a break in the 5th and then lose 5 games in a row against a guy like Simon is mindboggling.

Normallly it makes me like them more too - the perfection of Roger is annoying (sorry Fergie! ;) ).

But I think that I got so psyched over Nico's off season work, then he started so well in Auckland, that I thought he would kick Simon's butt all over the court.

Exactly, supporting Roger is  none of his wins excite you because he's expected to win the whole time. You should take up following Mathieu Montcourt :p

I know what you mean, it's obviously a bad loss for him but the most important time of the year I guess is during the clay court season. As long as he's injury free he'll be ok.

P.S. I hate the Aussie Open too :(

What's an American doing liking clay? :o

Hmmm...well its not to logical, but it makes sense to me. ;)

I hate Pete Sampras. I feel that he destroyed the game for awhile with his all power serve game. (I like longer rallies using strategy to move your opponent around.) And the only place where he couldn't use it was on clay. So I started watching the clay tournaments more, Guga arrived on the scene, and he got me interested in knowing more about the other clay players. Then came Carlos, JC, my beloved Nico , Fernando G, and now all of them.

So now I have this thing against hardcourt players. I know silly but hey what can I say. And all the great clay courters come from Spain and South America.

No, I didn't die after that match but I needed time to recover myself besides I have a lot of work so yes, I'm still here and I'm still supporting Nico 100%

NicoFan and Adee gee knows to much about tennis so I don't have any intention to put my nose into your posts but I'll only add something ... Latin american players are good in everything grass, clay, hardcourt, indoors, outdoors so that's why NicoFan love them LOL!

Sparko1030
01-17-2006, 09:13 PM
Hi Kid :wavey: Myself I've been too influenced by Nicofan to be objective lol! But really, claycourt is more exciting to watch as far as I'm concerned. As I've said before I like Andy but his game can be a bit of a yawn  IMO. And you are right Kid-it seems a lot of the LA and Spanish players can play other surfaces but don't get credit for it. Take Fena for example-3 championships on three different surfaces last year, and I wouldn't bet against Nalby just on any court lol! Perhaps its just easier for tennis 'experts' (journalists) to lump them all togather then they don't have to take the time to know anything... ;) (I'm in a bit of a mood today so I'm ready to gripe about pretty much anything today :boxing: ) :)

NicoFan
01-17-2006, 11:16 PM
:yeah: Kid and Sparko!

Definitely some Spaniards and latin players are good on every surface. Guille, JC, Carlos, Fernando, and our Nico even who won the Olympics on hard. And players like Feli and David N. who prefer hard - Feli hates clay!

I think all Nico and Fernando fans are in a mood today - what a sucky Oz Open. And all this controversy surrounding Fernando's match and its not even his fault. No, he didn't behave perfectly but sounds like he was provoked into (GonzoFan is a sweetie and I trust her version of events, and tennis724 admitted that Alex behaves like that) and then hurt on top of it.

Hey Adam - I'm watching the Hingis match - she looks good. Like they said, her serve is too slow, but it will come back. But had to feel sorry for Zvonareva - that poor girl always cries on the court. Mary Carillo was right - she needs a good sports pyschologist - you just can't cry on the court as points are being played.

Hi Sparko and NicoFan :wavey:

How could Feli hate clay courts?? Clay is just the best!!! I'm new in the tennis world but I almost cry when I saw the tournaments in grass, sooo boring!!! You can see the real talent in clay, 'cause you can use techniques, different effects in the serve and let me tell you that I adore Nico's flexibility on clay. I know that i'm not beign objective again, 'cause I adore Nico, but that's true!! most of the clay specialist are very flexible and is just amazing to see them play.

I read something about that poor girl crying, you could see what would happen if I were a professional tennis player  but I guess that I'd scream a lot before start to cry.

NicoFan
01-17-2006, 11:52 PM
Grass is the worse. Such a irrelevant surface. I've always hated it. And after going to Wimbledon, I thought all that green - they need a little ORANGE clay to spice it up a bit!!!

Yes indeed, our cute Feli dislike the dirt. I know...amazing.

I would definitely be a racquet thrower if I were a tennis player. Actually, I'd kind of be like Nico...throwing racquets, yelling and screaming. Maybe that's why I like him.

Poor Nico cuz he needed the court time, but obviously Fernando's shoulder is more important right now.

Too bad Nico wouldn't consider playing a challenger. But I know that he won't so can't wish for it. But I don't know why he won't. Last year when Chela, Zab, and Calleri went down in the rankings, they played challengers to get back up again.

I'm so scared, What if Nico rises up in the ranking and Fena start to go down? ! I,ve thought it 'cause 04 Was Nico's year and 05 Was Fena's year but there's has not been a nice thing for both in the same year.
Bad feelings coming on my head..

I'm glad someone else thought of it too. But will never happen especially since there are only two possibilities for challengers next week - one in Delray Beach on hard (he needs clay), and one in Vina - he'd never play a challenger at home at this stage of his career.

And also had the same thoughts about Nico and Fernando and how they'll do. They never do well at teh same time ever. Like you said if Nico goes good, Fer isn't good. If Fer is good, Nico isn't.

Fernando is scaring me cuz of this shoulder thing. Not good at all.

And I'm worried about DC - though Fer's health is more important - but still I want Chile to win. Nico can't do it on his own - they both have to be there if Chile is going to beat Slovakia.

I think that Alonso and NicoFan told what I've been thinking too, about challengers and about Feña's shoulder, hopefully this time off will help him a lot 'cause I'm tired that one of them has to have a crapy year and the other has to have a good year. I want good years for both!!!

Well I'm too freacked out right now to try to post more, you know why NicoFan!!

NicoFan and Adee gee knows to much about tennis so I don't have any intention to put my nose into your posts but I'll only add something ... Latin american players are good in everything grass, clay, hardcourt, indoors, outdoors so that's why NicoFan love them LOL!
Latin Americans good on grass  I think that's stretching it a bit. A couple of them are ok, Gonzo is probably the best on quicker surfaces.

I love watching Hingis. It's almost unthinkable for me but I'm almost taking more interest in the women's draw than the men! Hingis and Ivanovic have my full support. Zvonareva is slightly wrong in the head, I think she needs more than a good sport psychologist  she should take Dokic along too!

Nalby is good on grass! But yes, we'll have to leave grass out and only include hard and clay for the latinos.

I think half the players need sports psychologists. ;)

I like the women's side this year too - I really like HH - I want to see her back in the #1 spot again. The last couple year's I could barely stand watching the women because it was just so boring. But with HH back, if Mauresmo can keep it together headwise, Hingis, some of the Russians, etc. s/b exciting. To bad the Williams sisters let themselves lose their game like they did - then we really would have had a race.

Yeah I suppose Nalbandian passes as good on grass.

I'm not too keen on HH. She's good to watch, her backhand is :hearts: but as a person I don't really like her. She comes across as a bit of a bitch. Plus she snubbed me when I asked her for a pic at Wimbledon :ras:

So did I! I must have aged about 25 years during that match. Eurosport showed the 5th set, my nails have totally gone now. It was almost as nerveracking as the RG final (I had a bomb riding on Rafa).

Sure...no problema. :)

Though I like Luis too, but think PHM has a better chance of going further. At some point, Luis will be in over his head. Might be tonight though he'll give PHM a tough match.

Guille is playing Sebbie. I like both so normally I would be happy for the one that won, and sad for the one that lost. They're pretty even I think talent wise, though Guille obviously would have a bit of an edge if it were on clay. (And they both have sucky serves  ). But I'll go for Guille for you! :p

You know, there really aren't any players that I hate.

Probably the only one that comes close is Hewitt because of his comments to James and about South Americans.

There are others that I think are obnoxious, but they add personality to the game.

And some that I think are boring that put me to sleep.

And I love feuds between the players - if Fernando wasn't so hurting during the Alex match, that might have been amusing - I thought it was at first until I realized that Fernando was having so many physical problems. You have Guille against Nico. Guille against Fernando. Guille against Gaston. Guille against Luis. Guille against...well you get the point. ;) I used to love the old McEnroe/Connors feud - that was the best of all time. Good old fashion fun for the fans.

Lleyton is a great player, and he never gives up. And I always felt sorry for him - his parents are difficult from what I hear and are behind a lot of things he does. And then after what Kim did to him, I felt really bad for him. But he seems happy now so maybe he'll relax a bit and have less pressure on him.
