I saw the match. He did play and serve quite well (but not enough 1st serve unfortunately) but all his wasted break points made me really mad! (he lost some of them quite miserably)
But that wasn't a bad match, even though the score is so harsh.

I'm happy he plays the double, at least he'll play one more match!

Richard
I couldn't see the match, just parts of it (everytime ESPN was showing that court, Richard lost the points... ESPN :shout: )
I think it was better than the other tournaments matches, and I agree on the thing that he wasted a lot of bp!
He'll be playing doubles with Seb, so that's good! more tennis for him!

Court 7 Start Time 11.00 AM
Women's Singles - 2nd Rnd.

I saw the match, and the match was much closer than the scoreline suggested. Am not worried about Richards game at all....all he needs is more practice, and matchplay-then he'll be fine. It was like watching Venus loose her first round match...I knew she suffered for lack of match play. Anybody who counts Richie out for 2006 would be making a huge mistake.

I didn't see the match but all these wasted BP show how he lacks of confidence during crucial points. I am sure Supereric  will find a solution and Richard will be back stronger.

It's good for him to play the doubles, but once again, his draw is ... Un jour ou l'autre la chance tournera et là...

Poor Richard  I can't say I'm surprised. Of course I wanted him to win, but I guess we just have to wait until he fully recovers from the long layoff. I did get to see the last few games on ESPN (:woohoo: ) and yeah it was really furstrating to see how down Richard won on himself. Besides not coverting his break points, seeing him constantly look down made me even more upset. He has to stay positive, as hard as that may be. I was just sitting in my house wanting to jump through the screen to tell him "to say positive." Poor Richard :bigcry: At least there's always next year.... (I just hope he can finally wrangle up a win in Marseille in Februray)

Thanks for the caps

:yeah: for playing doubles. A really wise decision and hopefully he can get some good match play in (even if they are playing the 12 seeds  ) I hope that he also plays mixed just to get some more court time in and match play.

Allez Richard :bounce:

Star sports showed the end of that match, I kind of like Gremelmayr, seems like a very energetic player.

I was hoping Richard and Seb would make a little run, but Knowle is a pretty scary, pirate-looking guy, I can see how they would be intimidated.

I was actually hoping Richard would play the clay court events. Easier opponents, get some more confidence up, it worked for him two years ago...

Sweet4Richard

Yeah the wildcards can be seeded. I remember from the TD Waterhouse tournament in 2004, Lleyton was awarded a wildcard and then was seeded number one. To relate it back to Richie-he was a lucky loser and had to face Jan Michael Gambill in the first round and lost 7-6, 7-6. (He totally should of won that first set-it was killing me when I was there  )

Would they really go with Murray over Richard? Isnt Murray like 60 something in the ranks? Versus Gasquet at what 16 now? And Costa? I doubt that they would go with him anyway. Am I missing something as to how they pick WC's

silverwhite

They might pick Murray because he sent in his application early instead of last minute.

He needs to play a lot and win some matches to get confidence back.

Case, for your information, Silver is always that negative but I think there is sarcasm here and honestly, I laughed when I read it. Okay, I admit it was a nervous laugh but anyway...
We all behave differently face to such a situation but we all have in common the same wish... which is for Richard to recover his confidence.

And the situation is not that dramatic ( please Silver, don't contradict me :o ) seeing how Haas did well in this AO. Richard was unlucky with his draw and that's fate. I am very optimistic for the coming matches. Okay, I didn't see his match at the AO but from what I have heard, the 2nd set was pretty close. Richard didn't convert crucial points but he is still learning. He knows what he has to do now which is the most important thing.

And last thing: Can his next draw be worse than the AO one? No.

Sure you do. A win is a win is a win. Richie's confidence can't be all that high so if he gets a "weak" opponent then even better for him. This doesn't mean I don't believe in his abilities or talent. Richie's played Tim, Igor, and Tommy all tough players. At this point I'd rather Richie not face someone so tough in the 1st rnd but rather get them later on cause then his game would be in full flow. :p

I am a newcomer in the Richard fan-community, but when I decide to support someone, I stay very loyal ( so you'd better get used of seeing me over here:)) and I want the guy to flourish. That's why I wish him a big opponent and a big win.

Richie plays Sanguinetti in the 1st rnd. This is exactly the kind of player I wanted Richie to get. He doesn't have any weapons and should give Richie some good rhythm off the ground. I'm senseing his first win of '06. :)

this is from ATP site:

"...Also on Tuesday, third seed Richard Gasquet picked up his first win of 2006 as he handily defeated Italian veteran David Sanguinetti 6-3, 6-0.

The 19-year-old Frenchman, who went undefeated in the first round of his 11 tournament appearances last season, failed to advance past his openers in successive weeks at Doha, Sydney and Melbourne after drawing tough opponents in top Brit Tim Henman, eventual Sydney finalist Igor Andreev and former World No. 2 Tommy Haas, respectively.

Gasquet will be given a chance to avenge his Doha loss when he meets Henman in the second round on Wednesday...."

Sorry for bringing in Roger on this thread, but he lost his first four matches against Tim and still has a negative match record. As I see some parallels between Roger and Richard (and many differences, too ;) ) there might be something in Tim's game which makes it difficult for the supreme shotmakers. I don't know, just a thought.

Sorry, I did not want to get on your nerves, and I apologized in my first mail for bringing it up, but I just thought that here must be something in Henman's game which makes it difficult for certain players to get his teeth into, while on the other hand Henman loses regularly to less talented guys.

No need to be sorry. :) I'm just tired of the whole mini-fed thing. I guess it could be worse he could be compared to a lesser player. But Richie is Richie. He's not the next Fed he's the first Richard Gasquet.

Your right Timmy is tricky. How many players serve and volley now adays. It's basically him and Taylor. Guys on the tour don't see a net rusher that often. Plus losing to him earlier this year prob didn't help Richie much.

Richard is obviously not used to playing Henman's type of game....I think it's a whole new experience for him. Maybe he should practice more with players that serve and volley, but then there is just a handfull of them...I can't even think of 4 names.

I tend to agree but remember that Richard defeated Mirnyi and Dent on grass last year...Tim at his better is a level higher than these guys but I also think that this has to be the worst type of game when one have lost his rythm. It seems that Richard's serve is still irregular in this match and Henman love to put a lot of pressure with his game...

Hold on Rich, i think it's coming soon (if it could be for the DC I wouldn't be sad :) )

I'm very disappointed too...

The worst is that it was in France, in front of his public and he even hasn't the motivation and the pride to win AT LEAST a game in the last set?
He should have won some of the games but he just couldn't stop making UE on game points in a very pitiful way... It was like tanking, you're right... :(

Call me an idiot writing from hindsight. But I feared something like that. It is just that I never voice pessimism on my favourite players in fora before their matches.

I somehow feel this defeat is a direct consequence of the wonderful performance of last Friday. That was an emotional "high" which still has to be digested. He has not come down from there to do an average ordinary routine job, which would probably have been enough. When things turned difficult (the lost second set), he just did not have enough courage, power and will to fight it out. At the end he probably did not care anymore and simply wanted it to be over.

Even if today's performance ressembles so little to what he did last week, think there is a lot to learn from both matches:

From Friday: Richard can win a tough five-setter in difficult circumstances.
From today: Previous results don't count anymore: Every match has to be won anew.

If you want to be a real top-player, you'll have to fight yourself every day. I remain a believer. Cheer up guys! The next tourney starts on Monday :wavey:

Apparently, he withdrew from Rotterdam...
He is too tired because of the Davis Cup...

I really begin to worry a lot for him... He has to do some results in the US Masters Series if he can't repeat completely what he did last year in the clay tournaments... If he doesn't want to drop in the rankings and not to be seeded for Roland Garros... :o

Thanks Mag. ;)

I really don't know what to think about all this. Well, actually I didn't see his match against Haas but this kind of win, after so many losses, should have given him the willingness to be at the top not to "give up" against Clément.

Anyway, if he is tired it's a good thing that he withdraws from Rotterdam. No more results like this one please. It's better not to play than to play without willingness.

We can guess during the match that he was a bit tired but the more concerning is his lack of motivation... It seemed he didn't care about this match. At the end of the match, he had sometimes game points and break points but he blew all of them with unbelievable unforced errors... (even in the last game, he had game points!) It seemed like tanking...
He said in his interview that if the tournament wasn't Marseille, he wouldn't have played this week...

I still can't believe this result...

Sweet4Richard
02-15-2006, 09:25 PM
 That scoreline. Richard seems to have a habit of losing sets 6-0 (Robby Ginepri at the US Open and David Nalbandian at Wimbledon). I left class during the day to check his match and there were 4-4 on serve. I came home and this was the result. I was reading up on it and it does sound like Richard just tanked this or he was still on his high from Friday during DC. I dont know what to say

I'm happy that he did pull out of Rotterdam because he needs to focus on these two Masters Series because those ranking points from the clay/grass court season are goign to come flying off fast.

The only positive for this beginning of the year is that next year he won't have any points to defend (except his amazing 2nd round result in Zagreb  )

I was so surprised to see the score. As much as I love Arnaud I was rooting for Richard in this match, as he needed to get back into form. Im happy for Arnaud and everything, but if he had to beat Richard I wish it hadnt happened like this. This does slightly remind me of the USO match against Ginepri, but back then it was his elbow. He played one match in almost two weeks and he's still tired 5 days after!?! I understand the Davis Cup match was tough mentally, but is it really necessary to pull out next week as well? He needs the match practice and he'll have at least 4 or 5 days to recover before having to play his first round match. He needs to toughen up mentally if he's gonna have the career his talent deserves. I was so disappointed with his attitude today, especially in the 3rd set. I really hope he gets himself sorted out and back to his best soon! :)

Richard Gasquet: "I tried to finish it off in the second set. I did my best but just ran out of juice in the end. I had nothing more to give. I'm extremely tired after the Davis Cup, both mentally and physically. It was tough to play against a friend, especially after being all together as part of a team over the weekend in the Davis Cup."

"I went too far in the Davis Cup to do something here. I was empty mentally and physically and just not very good."

who cares if he wins or loses, he's need match time badly, I don't think he will be in top form until the clay court season, that's when he started to improve last year.

At this point, he should be looking at playing a consistent game and watching his error rate. Even if he loses the 2nd round, if its a tight game and he played well in each set, should mean he's on his way back to form hopefully.

I'm very happy Fed is in his quarter, Ritchie needs players like him, to make him work harder and bring out his A game.

Of course I'm hoping he wins, but judging by the number of losses this year and his injury, may take a while to find his rythm.

The rest of the doubles draw: http://www.pacificlifeopen.com/assets/scripts/TrackIt.asp?file=http://www.pacificlifeopen.com/en/players/draws/draws/06_ATP_MDD.pdf

If Richard and Seb win then they could possibly face Rafael and Youzhny in the 2nd round. For some reason I find this doubles draw hilarious :haha:

Roger...
Then, Rafa and Youzhny?

:haha:
Richard is the unluckiest guy ever ^^

Looks like Richard's first round opponent will be Kevin Kim who defeated Youzhny 7-5, 6-4

Allez Richard
