If this is true then this is brilliant news. In 2002 ankle injuries forced her out of the game. At the time she was my favourite female player. One of the most complete tennis players I have seen :worship:

I'm not sure what the rules regarding protected rankings on the wta are. I would assume that she simply won't have one... nor will she need one for entry purposes, I can't imagine her getting turned down for a WC anywhere. I'm sure that somebody on wtaworld will clarify the injury ranking rules sooner or later.

Regardless, I won't get my hopes up about this :p

Well she's going to give a press conference on Saturday about her comeback - so we might know more then.

But it for sure would be great to see her back. (But hopefully fitter than she was in Battaya....)

Martina totally dominated WTT, her team won (a lot thanks to her) and she won the Most Valuable Player award:worship:! So she probably used the WTT to see how she could still compete against the other players, and her results there probably encouraged to come back to the WTA tour:yeah:! I was so sad to see both of them go. I thought both retired too early and both brought something unique to the game. I miss Rafter's play style, samurai ponytails, zinc oxide and "sorry mate"s. I miss Rios' great talent, questionable long on top/shaved underneath hairdo, and just the fact the he didn't give a toot about what people thought.

Even though Guga is still not yet officially out- I am hoping that his physical problems are miraculously healed and he comes back 100%. I lurve him.

I hope that Hingis does well in this comeback. She definatley had one of the most interesting personalities of the past 20 years in the women's game. I think that Dementiava has some spicy (albiet different style) personality too- but Hingis brought the drama like no other.

Hingis offered Melbourne wildcard

Three-time Australian Open champion Martina Hingis will be offered a wildcard for next year's tournament - if she decides she wants to compete.

Hingis, who retired due to injury in 2002, announced on Tuesday she planned to return to professional tennis.

Tournament boss Paul McNamee said: "She'll be very popular and very welcome, but she has not finalised her plans as to when she's returning.

"We're hoping it's in Australia, but it's not a fait accompli."

McNamee said he had already made informal contact with the 25-year-old Swiss star's representatives.

"It's great for the sport that she's coming back," he said. "We just don't know whether it will be in Australia."

The 25-year-old Hingis, who won five Grand Slam titles during her career, made an earlier unsuccessful attempt to return to the circuit last February.

But on Tuesday she said: "I was never happy my injuries cut my career short and ultimately forced my decision to step away from tennis.

"I miss the game and the challenge of competing at the highest level of tennis, and I want to gauge whether I can stay healthy and compete against today's top players."

should add flavor to the tour just by being there, & a few wins might get the attention of most
he is a brilliant talent, no doubt about it, BUT
is she truly fully fit & has put her injury behind
how strong physically is she to stand the battering some of the younger player diss
How legitimate a challenger would she be to the top girls
I liked watching her play, always expect the unexpected from her

I feel that she quit the first time because she could not stand her losses to the younger and stronger players. Especially the Williams sisters... I bet she got so used to being the best that seeing the Williams sisters dominate the game was too much for her... if this is truly the case then she will probably last for a couple of months only... let me tell you now... after a couple of losses to Petrova or Sharapova she will probably quit again...

She quit because of ankle surgery in 2001 and 2002 which did not fully recover. I think she was leading the ladies points race at the time she left. I agree she may struggle to return, but her exit owed mostly to injuries; a problem all too evident in tennis today.
