Indeed. This match was impressive. He certainly held his nerve.

He has that something extra you need to become a big player. I watched most of the match and he was more aggressive and took it to A-rod.
A-Rod made the SF last year, so he's lost some big points. I don't know how far Nalbo has to go to overtake him though.

Nalbandian still quiet achiever

By Peter Hanlon
January 23, 2006

DAVID Nalbandian's progress towards the pointy end of the tournament has been typically glacial, so quiet and steady as to scarcely draw notice, yet with the potential to cause maximum damage to anyone he meets.

Tommy Robredo, the 16th seed, was the latest to feel the force of all that is hidden beneath the serene Nalbandian surface yesterday, bowing out 6-3, 6-0, 2-6, 6-2 in a match where the score was a reflection of toil.

Nalbandian prides himself on playing a tennis version of chess, pushing his opponent around the court and hitting the shot that is asked of every ball that comes his way. In the opening two sets yesterday he flirted with perfection.

"I don't know how close (to ideal), but I play very good," Nalbandian said. "With a few mistakes — I mean normal mistakes, because I was hitting very strong shots, very close to the line. So it's normal if you miss some. But I played very, very good in the beginning, and in the fourth set as well. So that makes me confident for the next round."

The opening game of the match went to multiple deuces and seemed an advertisement for a drawn-out affair, but Nalbandian was soon into stride, drawing gasps from Robredo as he was pushed from corner to corner, lured forward and clinically taken out of play with a lob or passing shot.

If the first set was pleasing, the second was worth archiving as Nalbandian broke serve three times and held his own without fuss. It made the third-set reversal all the more surprising as a hitherto unseen hesitancy crept into his game, yet the cooling breeze felt by Robredo was fleeting.

So how far can the fourth seed and four-year resident of the world top 10 go? The virus that curtailed his Open warm-up at Kooyong has all-but left his system and the departure of Andy Roddick has not hurt his cause.

Questions of his grand slam ambitions in the past have met with an unequivocal response — he hopes to win one, and believes it could be any of the four. Nalbandian is Mr Sheen — powerful on all manner of surfaces. He is durable, too, having held his spot in the top 10 in 2004 despite ailments restricting him to only 14 tournaments. He noted the appearance of Marcos Baghdatis' name in the quarter-final slot that all had assumed would be filled by Roddick.

"I know that all the players are tough right now. But first I have to think of (David) Ferrer or (Fabrice) Santoro."

Santoro it will be, after the 33-year-old marvel ousted the 11th seed, David Ferrer, 6-4, 7-5, 7-5 in a stunning performance of old-fashioned shot-making.

Santoro has a game of double-handed dinks and deceit mixed with drives and daredevil. He is also into his first grand slam quarter-final at his 54th attempt.

The Frenchman sank to his knees and collapsed onto his back after the win over Spain's Ferrer.

"Yes, because today I knew it was my chance and maybe the last one," Santoro told reporters when asked if he had been crying at the end of the match.

"I said a few times in the past three, four years, that I keep playing tennis because I like the game. I achieved almost everything I was expected, except a grand slam quarter-final. I was thinking about this (and) I was working hard for that."

Hello. Well done David and good luck against Santoro.

No. He'd have to win the tournament.

Well if David reach the final he will become #3, because he is gonna achieve 450 points, and with the projected ranking showing by this fella, we can see that the diference between A-Rod and David is only 415 points. So yeah he could be the number 3.

"I think you guys underestimate a lot of players. I mean, if you watched the match today, I mean, the guy can play tennis. Just 'cause his ranking is not there yet doesn't mean the guy doesn't deserve respect. [David] Nalbandian won Masters and he's playing great. I don't know how you can say "in your half." I told you guys five days ago that there's no such thing as an open draw. There's a lot of good players out there. Ok.
Yes I felt sorry for Santoro when Nalbo was winning all those games so easily. But at the same time it was great to watch Nalbo hit all those winners and play so freely. Santoro didin't hit many UE's, it was all from Nalbo's great shotmaking.

I was cringing at the regularity that David was winning points and games. It's a rarity to see this, but when we do, it's about as "cringe-worthy" as watching him lose. There's really no in-between with him.

Some nice words from Santoro about Nalbo.

Q. What do you like about his game? What did he do well? Do you think he can go on and do better?

FABRICE SANTORO: He does everything well. I mean, from the baseline he's very good on both side, even if his backhand is better. His backhand is just one of the best on the tour. He can do ‑‑ he put one on the right, one on the left all the time.

He serves pretty well. He has good hands. He moving well. I think he's a great player to watch. When I see him on the court, I always feel like he has ‑‑ before every shot, he has like one minute to play the ball. He's always in advance. He's ready. That's also why he's a good player.

Nalbandian hits ominous form

By Peter Hanlon
January 25, 2006

THERE was a point yesterday, at 4-4 in the opening set, when David Nalbandian worked out how to beat Fabrice Santoro. Not long after, those watching the Argentine pack his bags for a first appearance in an Australian Open semi-final wondered if he might just be able to beat anyone.

Be it through his tennis in the latter half of the match, the zealous fist pumped to his corner at match's end or his words under interrogation from a media eager to know where he stands, the No. 4 seed left no doubt that his business here is far from finished.

"I feel that I can keep going," Nalbandian said, reiterating that his goal, spoken with a repetition bordering on obsession, is to win grand slams. "So I'm ready to do it."

Nalbandian gave himself a rating of "eight-and-a-half points" out of 10, and wished he had been able to reach that mark right from the start, but was able to look beyond his early confusion in the face of Santoro's unique challenge in the knowledge that he had ultimately met it in ominous fashion.

Santoro led 4-3 with a break in the first set but could not capitalise.

From 5-5, Nalbandian won 14 games straight, and with the last of them the match. In the second and third sets, Santoro was fed a meagre ration of 16 points. The initial exchanges aside, Nalbandian's tennis was a scathing critique of the Frenchman's art, shredding his work in a manner that Degas and Monet surely never encountered.

"When I break back in the first and then I save 15-40 at four-all, everything change," Nalbandian said. "I start hitting better shots."

Santoro was clinically pared back from an initial state of dreaming that he could perhaps go a step further into uncharted territory to one of dismay in which simply winning the odd exchange was met with the sort of response from the crowd that Tony Greig reserves for a No. 11 who lays bat on ball.

"Every time I came to the net, he pass me, serve and volley; I can't come to the net because he pass me — I don't know what to do," the 33-year-old said.

Can Nalbandian go all the way? "I think he's a great player to watch. When I see him on the court, I always feel like, before every shot, he has one minute to play the ball. He's going to be very tough to beat, he does everything well. I think so."

Santoro, the man his peers love to watch, began as if he had mentally divided the court into small squares, and was determined not to leave until each had been coloured in. His great strength is to trick the opponent's mind, sapping power by reeling him back to his own crafty speed, and for a time it worked like a spell.

On one delicious point, Nalbandian was forced to chase down drop shot, lob, drop shot, lob, all to no avail. On another, Santoro's backhand volley was so subtle it spun back to his side of the court, leaving Nalbandian arriving at the net with no ball to strike.

But at 5-5, Nalbandian twigged, responding in kind with drop shots and lobs that unsettled an opponent who was naggingly aware of the toll taken by coming this far. From there it was power-driven carnage, to the tune of 47 winners to Santoro's 18.

Nalbandian has now ticked the semi-final box at all four majors, and moves into the last four bristling with energy; after slogging through 17 sets in his first four rounds here, yesterday was a bonus in all ways.

"I feel that I am in the semis in a really good shape," he said.

His focus is palpable. Asked for his thoughts on Roger Federer's five-set win over Tommy Haas, Nalbandian said: "He won." And as a parting shot, if you were a betting man, David, who would you back in this tournament? His smile was broad, but his eyes clear. "Me."

Yeah Marcos has become something of a sensation here in Melbourne and he has won plenty of the local hearts and minds. Tomorrow night's match is going to be incredibly tough but I'm going to do my best to get something of a support base going for Dahveed on Rod Laver.

As long as he continues playing the way he has in his recent matches then he has every chance of reaching the final and finally delivering the GS dream. We've really been shocked by the dramatic improvement we've seen with his service game. Afterall Fed has looked a little vulnerable, but we all know he's desperate to get a shot at avenging the masters cup defeat.

Chinese revolution the turning point for game's jack of all trades

By Linda Pearce
January 26, 2006

IT IS more than three years since David Nalbandian contested his only grand slam final — David having been mercilessly slain by Lleyton Hewitt's grasscourt Goliath at 2002 Wimbledon — and the something that has been missing from the Argentinian's solid-but-flawed career was best articulated two months ago by Ivan Ljubicic.

"David's a fantastic player but never won anything," said Ljubicic, speaking frankly but not nastily about the feeling from the locker-room. "We all know that he's not good in the important moments."

Ouch. For all of Nalbandian's renowned consistency and versatility — qualities underlined by the fact that the 24-year-old has this week joined Roger Federer and Andre Agassi as just the third active player to reach the semis of all four majors — it was no secret that he had, until then, failed when it had really counted.

That is why his defeat of Federer from a two-sets-to-love deficit in last year's Masters Cup final in Shanghai may end up being so significant. Although the Swiss was returning from an ankle injury and still went close to conjuring a miraculous fifth-set escape, Nalbandian spoke later about the metaphorical orang-utan that may have been lifted from his back by just his fourth ATP Tour title.

"Very important. It's very, very important," he said. "When I play Lleyton Hewitt in the Wimbledon finals, I was 20 years old, different. I was a little bit nervous and I couldn't play my best. But today I think I play very good from the beginning.

"And then win like this, it's really incredible, the way. It's incredible. Of course, it makes me special feeling to win like this. Of course, for the next time, very important matches or big moments, I will be different on court."

Judgement is still reserved, for tonight's semi-final against the Cypriot surprise Marcos Baghdatis means the fourth seed can reach Sunday's decider having not played anyone ranked higher than world No. 19 Tommy Robredo. On the flipside, while Nalbandian has lost at least one set in every match other than his quarter-final rout of Fabrice Santoro, it could also be argued he is peaking at just the right time.

After three consecutive Open quarter-finals, progress has been made, and with Andy Roddick gone from his half of the draw — and the absence of Rafael Nadal, Andre Agassi and Marat Safin culling the contenders before that — the Argentinian who does everything well but nothing breathtakingly will rarely have a better finals opportunity.

Federer may await, of course, but no need to worry about that just yet. And, perhaps, even later, no need to worry as much as others would naturally do. "We know each other very well from long time ago, so we know — we know very good," Nalbandian said when asked whether Shanghai had taught him anything more about how to beat Federer.

Certainly, Nalbandian is the man to ask, having the rare distinction of leading the Swiss 6-4 head to head, and also of beating a young Federer in the 1998 US Open junior final. The most famous son of Urquillo, a small town in Argentina's Cordoba province, won his first five senior matches against Federer — and, of course, the last, in the Masters final, which may yet prove to be Nalbandian's career epiphany.

"That tournament gave me more confidence, but to win a grand slam is not easy," Nalbandian cautioned after his opening five-setter against Thai Danai Udomchoke, when the effects of a stomach virus were still apparent.

"There are not many players who can win a grand slam. I always be in quarters, semis, in finals — always was near.

"But after that tournament (Shanghai), I feel that I can. So I am trying my best to get that goal."
