Nalbandian has a grand desire
By Patrick Miles
17jan06

THE Masters does not make a man, according to David Nalbandian, who scraped into the second round with a five-set victory yesterday over Thailand's Danai Udomchoke.

There is much work to be done before he can hope to claim a grand slam singles title, thereby joining the three men above him in the ATP rankings - Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Andy Roddick - as winners at the highest level.

The 24-year-old from Cordoba ended last season on a high by defeating Federer in the final of the Tennis Masters Cup in Shanghai.

But he has yet to prove himself over a fortnight, his best effort to date being runner-up to Lleyton Hewitt at Wimbledon in 2002.

After three consecutive quarter-final appearances at Melbourne Park, Nalbandian is one of the favourites to divest Federer of his crown this year.

But a grand slam requires twice the work of other events, such as the year-end round-robin Masters.

"That tournament gave me more confidence, but to win a grand slam is not easy," Nalbandian said after his 6-2 6-2 1-6 6-7 (7-4) 6-1 victory yesterday.

"There are not many players who can win a grand slam. I always be in quarters, semis, in finals - always was near.

"But after that tournament (Shanghai), I feel that I can. So I am trying my best to get that goal."

It took Nalbandian four sets to really hit his stride against the Thai ranked at No.121 in the world.

He said he was still feeling the effects of the stomach complaint that forced him to withdraw from last week's exhibition at Kooyong.

The main problem now was a lack of energy.

"I don't feel 100 per cent yet," Nalbandian said. "In the middle of the third set, I lost power, lost everything, and I didn't feel good. But that's normal. I was sick in the beginning of the week.

"I expect to be better physically, but I am not 100 per cent yet.

"In the third set, he played very well.

"I ate the bananas, fluid, everything. I try to do everything. It wasn't enough to finish it in three sets."

Some credit is due to his opponent, who came through qualifying to make his Australian Open debut.

Thailand's Davis Cup stocks are rising sharply with Danai and Paradorn Srichaphan regulars in the team.

Paradorn, who plays Germany's Nicolas Kiefer today, is his country's most popular athlete - arguably its most famous citizen - since Samart Payakaroon, the super-bantamweight boxing champion who was sent packing to a monastery by Jeff Fenech in 1987.

Danai is not far behind in a celebrity obsessed kingdom that has gone tennis mad.

Nalbandian's interest lies now in Stanislas Wawrinka, who defeated Spain's Albert Montanes 4-6 6-2 6-3 6-0.

The 20-year-old Wawrinka is expected to play an integral role in the Swiss team for its first-round Davis Cup tie on clay against Australia next month.

For Nalbandian, the world No.46 is something of a mystery.

"I don't know too much about him," Nalbandian said. "I know he's young; he plays well.

"All rounds here are tough - you can see it today. So I have to be ready; I have to be careful."

Nalbandian was asked whether the absence of defending champion, Marat Safin, Rafael Nadal and Andre Agassi had increased his chances of taking his first grand slam title.

"I don't know," he said. 'But if I play well, I can beat anyone, so it doesn't matter who the opponent is.

"I have to focus on my game, try to play my best tennis. If I do that, I have a chance to beat everybody."

Altho I only saw a few seconds of the end of David's marathon match, he looked in good enough form to me, playing well to hang in and beat Udomchoke, who really took it to him. David will be able to rest, rehydrate, get ready for Wawrinka on Wed. I don't see anyone really bothering David at the AO altho his draw is not that easy, as is Rogi's. Guille and Pandy have the soft draws imo. I feel David is ready to take his first slam.

well I have to say I enjoyed this match alot, although in the 3rd and 4th sets I was dying and I wanted to kill david for the sooo many unforced errors he did, but on the other side it was a very nice and exciting match to see...the Thai player was really good and in the last set David was just AWESOME!!! best of luck to him in the next round...

I recently watch and interview in ESPNLA and he said, he was having lost of power sometimes and lack of energy, and that was very weird, but in the 5th he was playing and feeling a lot better. Also the doctor's tell him that he is gonna keep this problems but he is gonna recover just fine.

I think though, part of the reason is because of Safin, Nadal and Agassi withdrawing. Looking at the bottom half, there aren't really many big names. But it's still cool anyway.

I like that it'll be a night match as there'll definitely be full coverage.

Personally I'm just hoping for a win and that the match doesn't get too close, scoreline wise. If he can keep pulling out some wins, he should be feeling better with each match.

I think though, part of the reason is because of Safin, Nadal and Agassi withdrawing. Looking at the bottom half, there aren't really many big names. But it's still cool anyway.

I agree. Initially I was surprised to see Nalbo as the night match and on the main court there again, but when you think about it does make sense. It's great though because usually I have to wait until the second week of a slam to see him in action.

Coria has to play Hanescu, and he's no slouch. I'm sure he'll give Coria some problems.
