Ivanisevic in Davis Cup Contention

Will he or won’t he? The big story heading into the Davis Cup final between Croatia and the Slovak Republic in Bratislava is whether Goran Ivanisevic will be selected to play the doubles rubber.

The 2001 Wimbledon champion has been brought into the four-man Croatian team to replace Sasa Tuksar. But whether Croatian captain Nikki Pilic breaks up the successful partnership between Ivan Ljubicic and Mario Ancic – who will also carry the singles load – remains to be seen.

Ljubicic and Ancic are 3-0 as a team in 2005 at Davis Cup level and in the first round upset Mike and Bob Bryan, who ended the year as the world’s No. 1 team.

Ivanisevic’s last professional appearance was a third-round singles loss to Lleyton Hewitt at Wimbledon in 2004. Ivanisevic last played Davis Cup in 2003, partnering Ivan Ljubicic to victory in the doubles rubber against USA. Ivanisevic and Ljubicic are unbeaten in six career Davis Cup doubles matches.

Ivanisevic is remaining guarded about his prospects of playing in the Tie. He told Davis Cup radio: “My obligation is to be ready if something happens, to maybe play doubles.”

Ljubicic has a perfect 9-0 record in singles and doubles this year after an extraordinary season. He is bidding to match John McEnroe's perfect 1982 season when he won eight singles and four doubles rubbers.

The Slovak Republic, which like Croatia, is bidding for its first Davis Cup title, will rely heavily on Dominik Hrbaty and Karol Beck. The final will be played December 2-4 in Bratislava, the Slovak Republic.

He clearly won't replace Ivan, and putting him in doubles when Mario and Ivan have such chemistry would be absurd. I could make a snark about Mario in singles, but I won't.

Exactly, you don't change a winning combination. I don't think anyone would reproach Ivanisevic his moment of glory with the trophy and the rest of the team even if he didn't play a role in the victory, although I remember the faint boos in Paris three years ago when Kafelnikov received his medal in the ceremony at the end, despite the fact that he contributed some good play in the doubles with Safin.

both ivan and i think mario said it to, it will be hard to get any croatia player to play the dead rubber, if they win on Saturday, they are running back to Croatia with the big thropy

Now, I didn't say Croatia won 3-0

maybe playing goran in doubles may be an advantages as it gives one of the singles players mario or ivan a much needs break

I don't know if i would like to put my faith in goran, although like almouchie says, it'll give the other a rest. I think he might be able to do it as he was pretty good in that exibition match he played a while back but then it is a five setter!

i think Ivanisevic words' speak for themsleves. He should be ready just in case any thing happens,But i don't think, they 'll primarily risk to change the successful working team between the younger Ancic and Ivan.

it all also depends who Slovakia throws out there.

Age doesn't matter much in doubles and Ivanisevic is the better player. So I'd choose him and Ljubicic.

If Croatia goes up 2-0 after day1, they will play Goran in doubles, with the way Ivan has been able to handle Hrbaty, which would be 4th match if needed

it'll be a matter i think, depending on singles results, meaning, if Croatia does well in singles matches, Goran might play for saving energy.but until then and unless ancic shows bad performance or something, Goran won't be an option imo.

Play the successful combination...

Ljubo needs to get over his Masters Cup thrashing
...and Ancic actually needs to win a match

Does Hrbaty play the first rubber, or is it randomly drawn?

I was under the impression that the #1 home player plays first against the #2 away player?

You have to put your best team on court which is Mario and Ivan. The only reason I would change is either Mario or Ivan played a very long 5 set match on day 1 which exhausted them.

In Davis cup, on friday the nº1 of each team faces the nº2 of the other team , and on sunday nº1's face each other and Nº2's too

Nº1 , is the singles player with highest entry ranking when the tie is played.

I know all that ;)

What I'm asking is what is the order? Does Slovak Republic #1 (Hrbaty) automatically start the tie, against Ancic?

Or is there a possibility that Beck starts the tie against Ljubicic?

Who starts? Is it done by draw?

well Croatia's 1st round match vs Ivan(#1) vs Agassi(#2) was the 1st match

so
Ljubicic vs Beck
Hrbaty vs Ancic
dubs
Ljubicic vs Hrbaty
Ancic vs Beck

I remember that after Karlovic bate Roddick in Madrid , MTF was plenty of persons who said that Karlovic had to play singles matches in DC final instead of Ancic . I wonder where are now all those persons ?? ( maybe it's weekend  )

Incidentally, why shouldn't Karlovic play? He can beat Dom...but Ancic should beat Dom too. Dom CANNOT deal with serve volleyers, least of all on a fast court.

It seems inside Croat team Karlovic is only useful for changing bulbs
