Whoa!

Does this mean he can't play anymore?
I'm pretty sure being ordained a monk would entail the responsibility of living a simple life...

I hope someone from Thailand can clear this up...

as it said in the news item, he has ordained only for one week. buddhism is not like christianity, where people become a monk forever. In thai buddhism, young men ordain from a few hours to lifetime, with no disgrace if a person disrobes. commonly, young men do it at the age of 20 and for three months. Usually it's done during the rain retreat, (khao phansa in Thai, the buddhist lent period). during this period all monks go to their home monastery and stay there for that period. It's most common to ordain for three months in one's province. However, if one ordains outside the khao phansa period, one can do it from a few hours, one day, three days, seven days, or one month. Young people do it to make merit for their parents as gratitude. They also ordain after the cremation of a grand parent or parent, and then dedicate the merit obtained to the deceased. In the case of Paradorn, he is doing it in gratitude to his parents. I posted a news item about this subject, a month or so ago in a thread in GM and in Paradorn's forum. He said that article that he wanted to do it at this time because of his tennis schedule didn't permit him earlier. As for being able to play, of course he will after his temporary ordination period is over, i.e. in seven days when he will disrobe and revert back to layman.
The Bangkok Post has a lovely picture of his parents pouring water over his head as his head and eye brow was shaved. DUring his period as a monk he has to follow completely the 227 rules of the vinaya ( the monkhood). This includes no meals after mid day, and going on the alms round at dawn to receive food from the lay people. Incidentally, His Majesty King Bhumibol also ordained temporarilly after his accession to the throne.
In my opinion, this adherence to tradition makes Thailand and Thai people balanced and able to cope with modernization better than many other societies. That is not to say there are no problems here, but this balance is so important to maintain social cohesion.
I think Paradorn will greatly benifit from his period as a monk, and we may see as a consequence his game improve also.

Well that's good...
Christianity really has a lot to learn from other religions.
The way I see it, the world will be a better place if people are less jaded and more simplistic.

But then again, who am I kidding? I am using a computer after all. :)
