LOL You know, I originally had quoted Agustin in my reply... but then I thought, he's not really in my signature, and I just like him because he looks so handsome/charming/generally hot so I should probably take him out hehe.

Kat, you're so right. This year I should create awkwardness with him, and get a pic of him on it, whilst reading, and wearing socks AND sandals. Pfft. European ;) :)

Scud decision defended

Tournament officials have hit back at claims that Mark Philippoussis shouldn't have been given a wildcard for January's Adelaide International....

Scud should definitely get a WC ;)
Especially if he's up against someone I like :tape:

Kat!
11-27-2005, 06:02 AM
well they gave one to Paul Baccanello last year, and I'm sure his ranking at that time was lower than the Scud's current ranking........... so I can't see why they shouldn't give one to him.

http://au.sports.yahoo.com//051202/4/efif.htmlRoddick a wildcard chance for Adelaide
Friday December 2, 4:41 PM

The organisers of next month's Adelaide International say there is a chance big-serving American Andy Roddick could take one of two remaining wild card entries for the event.

Tournament co-director, Peter Johnston, says with Lleyton Hewitt and Mark Phillippousis already in the draw, the wild cards could make the competition even more interesting.

"There's always the chance of an eleventh-hour request from a marquee player like say an Andy Roddick or someone," he said.

"We're not too hopeful, but we haven't closed the door on those things... but some guys who made their Davis Cup debut last year would be potential chances - [Chris] Guccione and [Peter] Luczak."

phili[ppoussis and Xavier Malisse to play doubles:

Scud doubles up for summer
By Leo Schlink
December 22, 2005
MARK Philippoussis yesterday provided the first hint of a rekindled passion for tennis by agreeing to a rare doubles appearance.

Philippoussis will contest the Next Generation Adelaide International with Belgium firebrand Xavier Malisse, who won the 2005 tournament with compatriot Olivier Rocchus.

Former US Open and Wimbledon runner-up Philippoussis has played only four ATP and Challenger events over the past two seasons.

The Victorian is intent on re-establishing a roller-coaster career which has been depressed over the past 24 months by injury and waning motivation.

A singles finalist in Adelaide in 2003, 171st-ranked Philippoussis has been given a wildcard into the January 2-8 Memorial Drive event.

Idle competitively since losing to Fernando Verdasco in the first round of St Petersburg in late October, Philippoussis has been training in the US.

The dual Davis Cup winner has been the subject of constant rumour he was marrying his teen fiancee Alexis Barbara in the short off-season.

The Melburnian contested only two doubles tournaments this season.

He teamed with Lleyton Hewitt at Queen's Club in London in June and joined up with Jan-Michael Gambill at Sunrise in Florida mid-year.

Having played only 23 tournaments since reaching a career-high mark of world No.8, Philippoussis is eager to lap up matchplay ahead of the Australian Open.

The right hander will travel from Adelaide to Auckland for the Heineken Open - an unorthodox move for an Australian player with tournament avenues open in Sydney and Melbourne the same week.

He will then return to his home town for the January 16-29 grand slam.

If Philippoussis is unable to string together wins at any of the three January tournaments his ranking will not suffer.

His inactivity because of injury last January means Philippoussis has no rankings points to defend.

Should he find form, he will roar into contention for Australia's first-round Davis Cup appointment with Roger Federer's Switzerland in Geneva from February 10-12.

Any WC news?

Thomas Enqvist requested a Wild-card but he's not sure to get it, the organisation said, cause they think of an Aussie, logical.

Guccione will probably get one but Reid won't!
More likely that Kimmich or Luczak will get it!

They will be having a pre-qualifying tournament at Memorial Drive on Wednesday & Thursday with 16 australian players with 2 wildcards into qualifying up for grabs then! Reid will be playing in that!

Top seeds eye Top10
December 30, 2005

Two of the top attractions in Adelaide this week are intent on using the Next Generation Adelaide International to kick start a year in which they hope to crack the top 10.

Third seed Tommy Robredo arrives in Adelaide hungry to post some big results.

"I don’t really care about who I’m going to play," said Robredo this afternoon. "I just want to play my game and practice and get used this surface and this weather and keep playing as much as possible.

"I think the best preparation (for the Australian Open) is here."

http://www.australianmenshardcourts.com.au/pages/image.aspx?assetId=RDM38716.867096169

Tommy Robredo is playing in Adelaide for the first time.

Robredo is coming off one of the best seasons of his career in which he reached a final and three semis. The Spaniard also made the quarters at Roland Garros and reached the last 16 at the US Open.

The world No.20 is playing in Adelaide for the first time and says he wants to play as matches as possible this season.

"The reason why I’m playing here before the Aussie Open is because I want to try to play many tournaments to get as much points as possible and hopefully get to my goal of the top 10."

But Robredo will face tough competition in the city of churches. Not only does he have hometown favourite Lleyton Hewitt to content with but second seed Dominik Hrbaty and fourth seed Mario Ancic are just as fired up.

Fresh of Croatia’s history making Davis Cup victory, Ancic says he loves playing on rebound ace and is keen to get his year off to a flying start.

http://www.australianmenshardcourts.com.au/pages/image.aspx?assetId=RDM38716.8672654398

Mario Ancic loves playing on Rebound Ace.

"I always like to play on Rebound Ace," said Ancic. "As a junior I played the final of the Australian Open and my first year I made the last 16 when I was 19.

"I think this year can be a big step. I’m (ranked) 22 in the world now, hopefully I’ll get to top 15 then top 10."

Ancic has had plenty of experience on the big stage. On top of his Davis Cup triumph this year, the 21-year-old also beat Roger Federer on Centre Court at Wimbledon in 2002 and has reached the last four at the All-England Club.

The Croatian, who collected his first singles title this year, says there’s just some fine tuning to do before he can be a real force at the top.

"I think sometimes I need to be more aggressive. It just comes down to really small things now. Hopefully I can play good here and keep my confidence up."
