I can't believe Roger choked serving for the TMC at 30-0 and a chance to tie John McEnroe's record. Once again, this proves that Roger is human and hopefully the non-sense about him "never losing" or being no fun to watch, because the end result is predictable will stop. Any true fan of Roger knows his history, nothing is guaranteed these days aside from beating Andy Roddick everytime he plays him in a Wimbledon Final.

There goes the Finals streak, consecutive wins and an opportunity to tie a record set by a legend.

Hey I just give him credit for being out there and playing. He didn't pick up his ball and go home because he wasn't 100% and wasn't playing his best. He could've given up in the 5th set when he was down 0-4. But he still fought. Nalby was just better today. No he didn't break Mac's record and some streaks came to an end, but it had to happen sometime, didn't it?

The biggest hope that I have from this is that David will learn from this. I don't care what the dislikers say- he has the talent! He has the strokes- about the cleanest on tour! Nalby does have a good amount of talent that it would be a shame not to be shone.

Now he just needs to win a GS and another Masters.

same here, but i also cant believe he came back from 0-*4 down in the fifth set to have the chance to win...
something supernatural was going on and someone really wanted Nalbandian to win, he had to get a big title somewhere for his talents cos there's no way he'd win a GS in his career...
we seen the WTA equivelant with Mauresmo last week..

to see Federer choking is painful as hell, but no one can compete with him anyway, he's still the best tennis player on the planet by a hundred miles and will show it again next year.

He came back after AO and RG losses, so I'm sure he'll come back after this one. Just like AO this is one of those matches where you hate to see someone lose. David really outplayed Rogi in the 3rd and 4th sets, then Rogi comes back in the 5th and has a chance to serve it out. I'm just amazed he lasted out there for almost 4 1/2 hours.

Wow- very hateful. ;) Not trying to be mean (although I am being a stinker)- I know you are upset as a Feddie but as a fan of Nalbandain I don't like to see David dismissed the way you are doing. Nalby has great talent- talent imo to be in the top 6 or so. His strokes are about the cleanest that you can find in tennis. Why not appreciate a good win by a great player who a lot of tennis fans have said with his talent should have more titles than he does?

Wow- very hateful. ;) Not trying to be mean (although I am being a stinker)- I know you are upset as a Feddie but as a fan of Nalbandain I don't like to see David dismissed the way you are doing. Nalby has great talent- talent imo to be in the top 6 or so. His strokes are about the cleanest that you can find in tennis. Why not appreciate a good win by a great player who a lot of tennis fans have said with his talent should have more titles than he does?
its not hateful, most people on this board know nabs wont figure at the slams next year. ive said congrats, but most people on this board are celebrating federer losing and not nabs wining.

Not true, of course you have the fed haters (like the murraymount kid previously called federer_express), but Nalbandian is very popular on this board and most people are celebrating his victory. Too much talent and too few titles.
I was wondering all match for whom I was rooting. First Roger, but when I saw that David was about to lose the game after having led 4-0 in the 5th I wasn't so sure anymore.

Good for both.

Good for Nalbandian for finally winning a big title, and keeping his H2H with Roger in his favor, and for playing a great match. I am so happy for him, because he really deserved something like this, and now will be seeded eighth at the AO!!!

Good for Roger. Had he won, it would have been silly, really, because he was not playing great, he was not in the best condition, and he should realize that he can't dominate that way all the time. Now he has another rival to worry about, and can work hard to continue to win. He can start afresh, and not have to worry about all those streaks he needs to maintain.

thing i dont get is at 0-4 down rogi lost 16 from 19 games... everyone saying he was unfit and injured, so how could he then get to 6*-5 30-0 .. just shows nalbi was able to fight and comeback and beat Federer when fed was playing great tennis so big props to Nalbandian, somehow winning 7-6 in the fifth makes his win more legimate than if he'd won the fifth set 6-1..
as for roger, he needs to ask himself how he can blow it from a great position then play a very weak tie break, was like the Federer of old..

Federer needs to get back 100% at the AO so he can oblitarate guys in 3 sets every match, that's the only way you dont choke= if matches are not close ;)

The posts here are not about Nalbandian winning, it was about Federer losing, aside from a few of the Argentines ... I don't think anyone here cares that Nalbandian won. This is another one of those Coria/Gaudio situations, it was about Coria losing and not Gaudio's winning.

Roger choked and he deserved to lose, I'm highly annoyed with him, because I realize that he is human, but if you're going to lose a match try doing it before you come back from down 0-4 and are 2 points away from winning the match. You know, in Australia when he tried that cute little between the leg shot on match point against Marat, that's what cost him too...aside from Safin's excellent play ... but he had plenty of time to turn around and hit a proper stroke.

Roger has on many occasions served for a match and blew it, remember the Ivan match ? I mean, not to take away from his play, but the storyline of this tournament has to be his inability to convert when serving for a match. Roger may be too nice of a guy, I can't ever imagine this happening to someone like Agassi. It was like he just didn't couldn't reach out and take the match from Nalbandian.

This is a sad situation, sad situation because I would have rather have seen Roger injured and get bageled, then see him fight back and lose like this. Everytime Roger loses, he has match point or is close to closing the match out. It's heart breaking stuff, I've forgotten his loss to Nadal, where he was clearly beaten by a better player on that particular surface. I still can't get over the Safin match, even almost a year later. Roger's losses just leave a taste in your mouth that you can't get out, so you buy a cheap stick of gum and hopes it just goes away.

Losing a match is one thing, but having it in the palm of your hand and choking is difficult to accept.

Can't even feel sorry for Roger the way I did at Roland Garros, it was there and just taken away from him. It's almost like being cheated and I still can't figure out for the life of me, aside from Roger's injury how Nalbandian won ... I mean sure ... Roger spotted him a set like Coria did Gaudio in Roland Garros. I pity Roger and Guillermo, because both deserved to win and had victory taken from them by guys that will probably use the trophy's as toilet plungers 10 years from now.

He did this to help out the event and he lost his record to a fat waste of talent who did shit all year and needed players to pull out to make the Cup.This is pathetic. You give Fed fans a bad name. All credit to Roger for not pulling out knowing he wasn't 100% and could get beat out there. He didn't pick up his ball and go home like Agassi because he wasn't playing his best. And so what if he stayed there partially to help out the event. That just shows he's got loads of class. It's about the sport more than it is about him and chasing records.

Like I said, I didn't see the match, but why can't some people here accept that in the end Roger's just human?

I agree that Roger is just human. I have watched tennnis since I was 3/4- and in my 23 years of watching tennis (therin lies my very old age) he is the most talented and graceful player that I have ever seen. But he is- alas- still human.

Along the same lines- Nalby is one of the most talented players I have seen in my tennis viewing years with the least results. So I think that this could be a time when Roger the human met a player whose talents were always there but just burst out (finally!)

aside from a few of the Argentines ... I don't think anyone here cares that Nalbandian won.

I live in Texas- about the middle of the USA- and I care very much that Nalby won. :)

:nerner: The best player won today :p PERIOD

It is a BIG disappointment for me but I am actually happy he lost to Nalby. Nalby has an all court game that I like so it was a well deserved win.

All his streaks came to an end but more importantly, for me, his h2h is still lop-sided against Nalby.

I am concerned that Roger choked like that in the final set. Since he doesn't play 5 setters anymore, I get the feeling that he simply doesn't know how to deal with them.

Hope he hasn't done any long term damage to the ankle by playing a 5 setter.

Oh well, on to AO 2006.

This is pathetic.

Nalby won fair and square. And as far as records....they have to come to an end some time. But as I said before a record of 81-4 is nothing to be ashamed about.

Where will these great event directors be when Roger is hurt because he is coming back too soon? He has to look out for number one.

but he's won a few.. remember the Miami final v Nadal, rotterdam final v Ljubicic...
as a federer fan today, you have to look at the bigger picture, in 2 years he's went 155 - 10
only 10 losses!
won 5 GS's and 8 TMS's...

roger's only 24 and he's all about GS's.. just wait for 2006 when he's rested, fit and focussed...
all Nalbandian did today was make roger even more fired up for 2006 :yeah:

We don't have how to know yet.

Perhaps was his feet, perhaps was muscular pain. If was muscular pain, the probable reason was Nalbandian forcing Federer to run like a crazy.

I personally think that was both things

Yeah and then people can go back to bitching about how boring mens tennis is, how Fed wins all the time, he has no competition, ect. I remember after AO Roger said it was almost good to lose that close match because he had the feeling people were out there rooting against him because he was winning all the time. And after that match they saw he was human.

When Vee and Ree dominated women's tennis the mantra was "women's tennis is boring". Now it's happening to Rogelio.
I thought Nalbandian should've won their first meeting here because he was playing so well. Glad to see he didn't get down on himself and managed to pull this off.

Is this the end of Rogelio's reign? Not hardly. What doesn't kill you makes you stronger. Fed will be back with a vengeance in Melbourne and I say this as a Rafa fan.

Whoa. When Agassi plays a tough opponent, he chokes all the time.

And yes, Roger is very nice, but his record speaks for itself. So he lost. Tough. That does not mean that there are inherent weaknesses in his character that made him lose this match.

I think a lot of the Fed fans are totally overreacting. It's easy being a fan when Roger's winning. It's when he loses that we have to really appreciate how incredible this past two years have been and how spoiled we've become as fans. You guys get unnecessarily nasty. The streaks needed to end at some point. Time to congratulate Nalbandian and wish Roger an even better 2006!

That said, I kept wishing Nalbandian a big win. So now he got it. Now I can go back to merely looking at him and wishing him to be far, far away from Roger in tournaments.

As I said before he was losing serve left and right so I was not surprised in the least he couldn't serve it out. But I don't really feel the need to come here and call him a choker and bitch about all the records and streaks ending. And by saying he gave it his all is not taking anything away from Nalby, who was just the better player today, period.

:worship: :worship: :worship

My thoughts exactly. Couldn't have put it better myself.

Congrats to David, really deserved to win a big title :yeah:

A bit sad that it is at Roger's expense but Roger was going to have his streaks snapped at some point and in a way it is fitting that Nalbandian is the one to do it.

Let's hope this will help David overcome some of his inner demons and let's also hope that whatever was troubling Roger's movement had nothing to do with his injury and that he doesn't suffer any long lasting physical ailments as a result.

Anyone saying Roger choked simply because he led 5-4 30-0 in the 5th don't know much about tennis i guess (or is a troll :p )...
I don't think Roger's ankle has been such a problem, but his lack of practice and fitness certainly was. David knew it and made him run a lot and made the game last. And if you want to blame someone for choking... too bad for you Roger didn't win because David clearly let him come back from 4-0 to 4-4, but kudos to him for his reaction when Roger served for the game!
