Federer couldn't return Nalbandian's serve in the first match and still won. He is in a better returning rhythm now so that should help. If his BH and Fh are on like they were at the USO then he can win this easily. If not, expect a long, tough 5-setter that could go either way.

Dirk
11-19-2005, 08:52 PM
Roger also was mixing up the pace more (which is key against David) in that 3rd set in RR so Roger should be on and he knows what to do. THIS IS HIS FINAL MATCH OF THE YEAR SO NINJA WILL COME OUT IN FURY.

If Roger wins then I will do my first and only Ninja Mission of the year, don't ask why I haven't done more because you will not like the answer.

David will try anything to trouble Rogi, but I'm sure and I hope Fed will be aware of that and will play on the top of his game:yeah:! His level improved a lot during the week, the same can be said about David, but Rogi can certainly beat him again if he's on mentally and physically, so GOOOOOOOOO FEDDDDDDDD:bounce:!!!!!!!!!!!!

Something is clearly wrong with Roger's footwork, he is moving gingerly, not getting his feet into position for shots resulting in ridiculous errors.

R.Federer
11-20-2005, 10:21 AM
It is never too late for Roge to break, hold, break and win 3rd set. As a champion, he will not give up 3rd set just like that.
ROGE YOU CAN WIN THIS IN STRAIGHTS!!!!
ALLEZ ROGE!!!!

R.Federer
11-20-2005, 10:31 AM
Just like the TBs were close, the second set was not a run away for david.
Many games go to deuce, Roge has break points, but just
like he won the Big Points on TB, then he lose them in set 3.
But Roge will win the Big Points in SET 4!!!! ALLEZ ROGE!!!!

nobama
11-20-2005, 10:35 AM
Oh I hope so. I'm just nervous about his fitness if it goes to a 5th set.

R.Federer
11-20-2005, 10:42 AM

Is Roger just giving up this set and saving himself for the 5th? I hope he's not really hurting out there. If he is he needs to quit.

C'MON ROGER!! YOU CAN DO IT IN THE 5TH!!!

JuanRodriguez
11-20-2005, 10:58 AM

I'm watching scoreboard online. I'm so nervous.

Come on Roger! Don't give up! Fight!

Go!!

nobama
11-20-2005, 11:09 AM
Whatever happens, at least he came to Shanghai and tried. he didn't pick up his ball and go home because he wasn't 100% fit and might not play his best out there. The scoreboard has been frozen for a while. Are they playing right now?

lucashg
11-20-2005, 11:09 AM
He's not running at all. He can't serve well to save his service games and his groundstrokes are really affected by his bad positioning, plus Nalbandian is pressuring since the first shot (let that be his serve or his return).

He seems unable to fight. It seems like he want (otherwise he would have retired already), but can't. That's disturbing to watch.

R.Federer
11-20-2005, 11:12 AM
Oh God, this is so hurtful
Please help Roge out!!!!
Come on Roger Federer
SHOW US YOU CAN DO IT!!!!

nobama
11-20-2005, 11:14 AM
Not to take anything away from Nalby, but at least we know Roger's really not himself this match. It makes a potential loss easier to swallow. If he was 100% and playing decent, but Nalby was playing just a little bit better, I'd be more bummed out. Of course Roger chose to play so he can't use injury as an excuse....I just hope he retires if his leg/foot is really bothering him. No shame in that.

nobama
11-20-2005, 11:16 AM
I guess it's 4-0 Nalby now. Congrats to David! And Roger you still had an amazing year! You'll come back strong next year! :worship:

11-20-2005, 11:18 AM

R.Federer
11-20-2005, 11:20 AM
So many things, so many streaks riding on this match
How difficult it must be for Roge, especially if its his ankle which let him down
But please, give credit to the opponent also
Roge had chances in the third to finish it off, but could not take them. WE LOVE YOU ROGE!!!!

nobama
11-20-2005, 11:24 AM
Nalby one this fair and square so hats off to him. But I commend Roger for showing up and playing knowing there could be a result like this. It can't be any fun out there to serve up all these df's and lose service games easily.

Minnie
11-20-2005, 11:27 AM
I've always been of the opinion t hat Roger should not have played this tournament ... because a) he would not have had enough time to train after this injury and b) ankle ligaments take a long time to get right ... and I was afraid he might risk further damage by playing too much too soon. It is painful to watch this ... but, all things said + done, David seized his chances and has played very well. But ... its never over till its over!! (Though I'm losing faith I have to confess!)

nobama
11-20-2005, 11:28 AM
Roger broke back a second time!!!!!!!! WTF!!!!!!!!!! Now PLEASE HOLD ROGER!!!!!!!!!!!!

lsy
11-20-2005, 11:28 AM

11-20-2005, 12:03 PM
Nalbandian played well and deserved it, Roger got some luck he had some nerves in the middle of the 5th. Congrats!

Roger really deserved all those records and to keep his finals winning streak for longer, but well.. it's the game, I hope this isn't such a tough loss for him because he knew his conditions and still fought hard. Have a nice rest and come back kicking everyone's ass in 2006, Rogi! I'm also proud she showed some resistence. Probably could've won, but today was Nalbandian's day.

Come to think of it, it's kind of hilarious that Nalbandian and Mauresmo won the TMC and YEC, respectively. It fits, lol.

nobama
11-20-2005, 12:12 PM
Hey I remember when Rogi lost AO and everyone was all worried what that would do to him, how he would react. And then he ends the year at 81-4, winning 11 titles. I'm sure he'll be disappointed. But I think he would be even more so if he had been 100% and just got out played. He fought hard, he tried. He didn't do an Agassi and go home because no one wants to see him playing badly. He's a fighter and not afraid to lose.

Just enjoy your holiday Roger and come back next year fresh and ready to go.

Even though it's just even more heartbreaking to see him lose after such hard fight, but still very proud of him. Never give up, that's the spirit. I'm sure Rogi will be sad, but he will be glad that he had given the crowds such good show there and would be proud of himself. Now get a good rest, and might as well, new year, and burden on those creepy records all gone...FRESH START!

Well done Nalby too! Totally deserve the victory!

6-7(4)6-7(11)6-26-17-6(4) Nalbandian won, but where did Federer come up with those wins from 4-0 in the 5th set up to 6-5 within 2 points of the championship... EVVERYONE Next year he will win the Grandslam of tennis (All four Majors) and i believe he will crush the opposition cos he hates losing and this will motivate him more than ever, he will train all throughout the offseason and smash all the opponents at the Aussie open, trust me. I feel sorry for them

nobama
11-20-2005, 12:40 PM
Nalby won fair and square but it's so obvious that Rogi was not 100% out there. Served up lots of df's and plenty of double breaks. And still had a chance to serve for the match. I remember when James Blake lost to Roger in Cincy in a close match. In his interview the first thing he said was he wasn't playing Roger at his best, Roger was rusty from a long time off.

In a way maybe it's a good thing all these streaks have come to an end. That's a lot of pressure for anyone and it's not so easy to keep winning week in and week out. Roger can't be too disappointed because he came to Shanghai not knowing if he could even play. So to get to the finals is a huge accomplishment.

11-20-2005, 12:42 PM
i was hoping for an exciting final n i got more than i expected, thankz to rogi n nalby for this treat. i hav to admitt i was happier that nalby won but rogi is still d king, nalby d master of 05. even tho rogi lost i think a match like this, gave a chance for both to display some impressive tennis which is wat this game is all about. so congrats to both of them.

Grow up, Agassi didnt go home cos he was playing badly, he had an injury, hes 35 bloody years old, Roger has alot more to motivate him than Agassi when it comes to playing with injury, injury for agassi at this stage could end his career. Yeh i know ur gonna start sayin crap about him havin to retire but Back off because Andre and Roger dont hate each other and Agassi has praised him constantly.

He didn't deserve shit, he was a fat waste of talent who was not in the top 8. Roger was rusty from his lay off and fucking blew it. Roger should have skipped this event like the rest of them.

Minnie
11-20-2005, 12:47 PM
I've always felt it was touch + go whether Roger would win this tournament having sustained that ankle injury (perhaps that will teach him that when you train, you MUST wear ankle strapping!!!) and not being 100% match fit. I think it was only his lion's heart that made him up his game in the 5th to try + pull it out. All credit to him for putting himself on the line like he did - but also all credit to David who saw his opportunities, and took them. No doubt Roger will come roaring back next year to show everyone this is NOT the beginning of the end (as no doubt all Fed haters might be predicting!!). Now he can go away and have a nice holidays!

Dirk
11-20-2005, 12:52 PM
Roger shouldn't whore himself for events anymore. He should put himself and his health first and foremost. I just have a real problem with this record breaking loss because David is a waste of talent and he shouldn't have been there. I rather it been to Hewitt or Roddick anyone who was IN THE TOP 8 not some fat fuck who does jackshit all year and then plays his heart out against a out of form champion. This was just one big fucking embarrassment.

almouchie
11-20-2005, 12:53 PM
david ended Roger's 24consecutive final win record, & the chance to equal McEnroe's 84 season victories
hopefully next year we will see more competition & better tennis from all the players

He has a brave!! and Rogi was great at the ceremony. he congratulated David, thank to his team, to all people involved in this TMC, to the sponcer, and of course to the crowd. He said unfortunately he couldn't his last match but still this year was great for him. He 'd like to come back next year and see them again, And dureing Nalby's speach, Nalby said to rogi not to be dissapointed coz this isn't their last match but this time ....so Rogi smile back, there was very nice mood between them. and still his face shows his dessapointment and also proud of himself.  I have huge respect to Roger. He showed the guts. People notice that he is a real champion, even when he loses.
Rogi, well done!! I proud of you so much.
Thanks for your brilliant tennis whole through the year. :worship: :worship:

I left before the 5th set, i had no idea he was able to come back from 0-4, to be able to serve for the match  disappointing result, but so proud of his effort and everything he's accomplished this season; the titles won, records equaled and broken..like someone said shades of the ao semifinal here, this will motivate him even more for 2006. Can't wait for next season :)

He didn't deserve shit, he was a fat waste of talent who was not in the top 8. Roger was rusty from his lay off and fucking blew it. Roger should have skipped this event like the rest of them.
Get over it dude, Nalbandian won. The fact that the first two sets were so close should indicate how good he is, but maybe not. Who gives a shit that he qualified through other pullouts. That's the way this tournament works.

It sucks that Roger lost, but there it is. Whining and bitching about it isn't going to change anything. No, Roger clearly wasn't at his best. He'd never lose a match up 2 sets to 0 under normal circumstances (not to mention getting blown out 6-2 6-1 4-0 before making his stand). Fantastic effort there at the end by Rogi. Wish he coulda pulled it out, but he's still the best in the world by a wide margin. Look forward to him reclaiming his AO title next year.

That's harsh Dirk ... I thought David played extremely well, though he has a talent he has never been able to sustain. Like you, I think it may well have been a different result with a 100% Roger. Rogi actually said something (I think yesterday or whenever) about if he lost the final, he'd still be proud of his record because it would still mean a 81-4 win/loss ratio for 2005. I thought that was odd .. because normally you hear him say "I'm the hot favourite"!! It struck me then that something wasn't quite right. I think if he had managed to win this tournment, it would have been the achievement of his career, bearing in mind his lack of fitness.

Dirk

I never said David isn't a great talent but he shouldn't have been here and it pisses me off that he beat Roger who was out of form and fitness. Yes, bitching won't change it but it will make me feel better and I bet my life Roger is fucking furious that he blew it once again two points away and he fucks it up again but not as bad as the Oz loss.

I hope to god this makes Roger a more mentally stronger closer.

The sad/funny thing is, this match essentially showed what we as Federer fans have always known. He does have trouble closing out sets/matches and he always fights like hell when down. Putting away those close matches is definitely something he'll want to work on. The down side of winning so much is that he gets far too little practice at it.

I'm not surprised. I thought it was mission impossible to win best of 5 in his current form. In fact, I didn't expect him to win his RR matches.
The final streak couldn't go on forever. As far as I'm concerned, better to lose here than in Australia.

As disappointed as I am for Feds, reason comes through here. He was bound to lose at one point or another. I'm sure that no one expected it to be in a final, however Feds really wasn't in the best of form, and it was a miracle just to get through the RR.

So, Roger, relax, soak up the sun, and come back in Australia. :)

My final thoughts:

Nalbandian d Federer 67(4) 67(11) 62 61 76(3)

When I got up and saw that they were STILL playing, I knew it would be all over for Rogi. Fifth-set tiebreak – an omen. What a heartbreaking loss when you put everything out there, including your big heart.

Actually, a logical win for Nalby over Rogi as he IS still Rogi’s nemesis. Just like AO when Marat d Rogi in that SF. Rogi said Marat was the big threat in that tournament and he was right. In Shanghai, as I said earlier Rogi has dropped a set every RR match and usually the player who struggles thru rounds doesn’t win the title in the end. It’s just too much. On the other hand, Nalby, although he lost to Rogi in RR1, his mind was on his fishing trip and he was a late entry – he was simply getting into his stride but he still took a set off Rogi and pushed him.

Really, the odds were vs. Rogi in this final:

Nalby is Rogi’s nemesis
Nalby plays better on this surface
Rogi came in hurt and not at 100%
Nalby was starting to show signs of good form over the last few tournaments
Rogi came in out-of-form, not having played a match since he won Bangkok 6 weeks previously
Rogi dropped a set each RR match
Nalby only lost to Rogi and beat the in-form, confident Ljubicic and then went on to beat the consistent, confident Davydenko
Rogi played far from his best throughout Shanghai
Nalby played high-level, beautiful tennis in RR2, 3 and in the SF
Although Rogi double-bagelled Gaudio in the SF, he was greatly helped by Gaston’s inability to play his best tennis [as he said, really nothing worked for him]
Rogi has been playing less than “perfect” tennis for some time this year and it was asking too much for him to continue to make so many UEs, be unable to convert those breakpoints, have less-than-stellar serves and returns, be broken so many times and lose sets, AND keep on winning matches and titles – it was bound to come to an end.
There were too many “records” to be made in this final: equalling McEnroe’s stats; becoming the next player to do the TMC hat-trick since Lendl; extending his finals win-streak to 25; defending the TMC, etc.
Nalby can go on for ages, he never gets tired whereas the longer the match, the more likely Rogi will lose
Rogi rarely wins 5-setters
Rogi had all the pressure, as he has had all year [especially the pressure he put on himself after Rafa and Andre pulled out] and Nalby none at all

FINALLY, Rogi’s incredible success had to come to an end sometime and today, it was David’s turn to finally fulfill the Argie promise – we’ve been waiting for awhile now, but he did it and proved that he is a very talented player, one whose tennis is also beautiful to watch, so effortless and understated [a lot like Rogi’s subtle artistry], w all the shots.

Congratulations to David, he is worthy of this huge title [as was Corretja in 1998 when he beat the then-reigning RG champ, Moya, AND beating Agassi and Sampras in the process]. Well deserved, David!! Coming back from two tough sets down showed how motivated he was and how he wanted this win so badly. He said motivation has been a problem for him but not any more! For David, playing Rogi in the final WAS the motivation. Felicitaciones!

Who said this TMC Shanghai was crap?? Only those who refuse to recognize that there IS still talent even after the withdrawals of Nadal, Agassi, Roddick, Hewitt and Safin.

I said that if Rogi could not win this title [and I had my doubts all along], I only wanted Gaudio, Nalbandian or [later] Gonzalez to win.

This is a bitter, tough, disappointing, heartbreaking loss for Rogi, who felt responsible to the tournament by hanging in despite his injury and trying to win a match. After three difficult wins, Rogi was given an easy match in the SF vs. Gaston. In the final, Rogi went the distance as he did in the AO05 SF and in the end, lost the battle. But he went beyond the pain threshold, didn’t give up, fought probably his toughest opponent who’s been beating him since juniors [and generally has the upper hand vs. Rogi] and lost to the man who peaked at the perfect time, in his perfect matchup, in a final for once vs. Rogi. So Rogi has ended his year the way he began: losing a tough 5-setter, in pain, vs. the big tournament winner.

On a positive note, at least Rogi achieved his TWO goals: winning Wimbledon and remaining No 1 at the end of 2005, nothing more, nothing less. Rogi was being realistic. It did take an impeccable Nalby to beat Rogi in a tight match, as it did Safin and Gasquet. Rogi has absolutely nothing to be ashamed of and is a gracious finalist.

I only want Rogi to be extremely judicious in 2006 – these foot injuries are stopping him from playing his best tennis, therefore preventing him from winning the title. But more importantly, it’s Rogi’s health that is at stake. I don’t care about all the records. He’ll never win that race and it doesn’t matter because he has already proven himself to be among the very best ever. What’s more, Rogi is just the best No 1 the tennis world could ever have. I am extremely proud of him, on and off the court.

Next year all will change – if Rogi doesn’t defend ALL his 11 titles, that’s to be expected. He has had three incredible years in a row and we have yet to see who can equal such a status in tennis.

I am sad for Rogi but I’m not surprised that he lost to David. It was in the books. It was David’s fate to put off his fishing trip and come to Shanghai, not just to play, but to win [he must have been happy to see Rogi in his group].

Well done, David – I’m glad that you and Gaston and Fena all were worthy replacements in Shanghai. This TMC was as good as any other. And another player makes Argie history!! This is the best ending for Nalby, who suffered the loss of his father earlier this year. Sweet victory indeed – and all without a coach.

Now David can go fishing and Rogi can take a well-deserved vacation.

Until 2006…

Now I need a vacation after this crazy TMC!

Oh and to console everyone, here are those 11 titles that our Rogi won in 2005:
Shanghaï (I): Federer - David Nalbandian (Arg) 7-6 7-6 2-6 1-6 6-7

Wow, someone in GM (not a Fed fan) actually sayd Nalby won this match because Fed was less than 100%.

I'm still amazed that Roger not being at his best - someone posted here that he told the trainer his legs were gone - was 2 points away from winning this match! Just shows the kind of match you have to play to beat him. Nalby even admitted Roger wasn't 100%. He just took the chance he had and siezed on it. But I'll say again, kudos to Roger for hanging in there and fighting and not retiring in the 3rd or 4th or 5th set set when he obviously was hurting.

No thats not true, ur trying to make up these 2 excuses, Nalbandian had a heap of pressure, not as much as roger but he had alot. Roger plays better on faster surfaces, Nalbandian had the pressure of finally winning a big match in his career, finally beating Federer after getting owned by him for the past 2 years, the Crowd wasnt against him but was FOR Roger, he knew Roger wants to win everything and can beat ppl when not at his best. Roger also has the aura of invincibilty, especially since he didnt lose after taking his vacation after Wimbledon, and he still remained undefeated. If Roger doesnt move well he will try and finish the points quickly with Serve volley, and the opponents have to move the ball away from him, because he can still hit groundstrokes well when not moving too well, Roger has a tough serve too. There was alotta pressure, and Roger did beat Ljubicic first. Roger also showed signs of being in form when he crushed that pathetic loser Gaudio. No one ever bets against Roger in a final even if hes sick injured, rusty, or tired because he only needs a small slip up from the opponent to take control of the match again (e.g. down 0-4 in the 5th and Nalbandian tightened up and lost 5 consecutive games)

And if somebody else deserves to won none others than David. Somebody noted that he's only sub so he doesnt deserves to win ??? what kind of statement of that ... he won because he played and fought on the court not because Roger withdrawn in the middle of the game.

And Roger already won 11 this year, you sounds so looser just because he loose one final to a player who deserves to win because he's a great fighter too. I believe rank is not entitled everybody's talent...just showing how consistent a player is

well, david played better on the day, so congrats

had to leave during the middle of the fourth set, thinking it'll be easy for david the rest of the way, so i'm really proud of roger for at least getting the fifth set to a tb, and his whole week as well

his streak had to end sooner or later, and if it had to end, i'm happy that it ended this way: big tournement, but not a slam. hope it leaves a bitter taste in his mouth
being able to close out match on his serve and missing it. hope he deals with this little problem. although he had trouble with holding his serve for the whole match, but still, this had been going on for the whole year

oh, and i wouldn't mind that he lets points, games, and even sets go sometimes. i love the fact that he fights so hard for everuthing, but i was puzzled and worried with him being 2 breaks down in the third but still fighting like hell on david's serve.

let it go, save some energy, and get going in the fourth

esp with him seeming to not be moving well at that point already.
