Gaudio outlasts Gonzalez 1-6 7-5 7-5, to set up a showdown with Federer

Gonzalez led 6-1 *5-3, before being broken, then having 3 match points at *4-5 in the 2nd set.

But Gaudio fought back, and has posted a solid win.

5-5 in the third set , Gonzo serving 30-40 ( break point for Gaudio ) and tries to hit an ace on second serve = double fault = Gaudio breaks

:silly:= Fernando González

I can't never be a fan of a player with this brainless brain

I loved listening to P.Mac and Cliffy during the first set and a half, they were completely writing Gaudio off from the getgo, and then they were speachless in the end. Despite how much I like Gonzalez, I have to say this is my favorite result of the TMC, because Gaudio is a class player who can play on other surfaces if he focuses on his strengths, and as the match wore on he showed all of his reportoir, bravo!

I can't argue that Fena got tight and blew the match. He had the match in the palm of his hand and let it go... BUT the guy did not give up! He kept fighting and was still in it to the end. I've seen other players who do give up but Fena is not one of those! Fernando was called and came to Shanghai at the last minute and that he actually had a shot at the semis is amazing. Some players here will not have won a match at Shanghai. I know Fena has a "fearless" game that backfires sometimes, but he also has a lot of heart and I have never never seen him give up-and certainly not today. And as far as Ivan goes-I didn't see the match but isn't it possible the guy is just plain exhausted??? Who has played more in the last 2 months then he?

Congrats to Gaston-he hung in there and won. Good luck to him against Roger tomorrow.

Well, since there were 5 replacements (thus only 3 "real" qualifiers), at least one of them had to make it to the semis.
Coria was one of the "real" qualifiers, hence the second replacement in the semis.

Some credit here - Fernando tried hard and didn't give up. And filled in really well considering that this was a last minute thing for him. And Fernando has really improved this year. Worked hard, lost weight, and moved his game away from the all power game and added some other shots.

He did get a little tight at the end. But that's pretty normal for any player (outside of Roger).

Have some respect for what Fernando has accomplished this year. Oh I forgot - this is MTF...there is no respect here.

He was 4-3, up with a break and 40-15 and got broken back. I feared he will snap. Feña held and went up 5-4. Gaudio leveled at 5-5, broke for 6-5 and served for the match. Great win for El Gato. :yeah:

Fernando played his game, but unfortunately made too many unforced errors. The reason
he did that was he got tight on match points on his own serve in the second set. Full credit to Gaston for hanging in there and eventually coming oyt the winner. I was rooting for Fena, but unfortunately for me and all his fans the result was not what we wanted. Gonzo is not brainless as some people have pointed, he has proven that already in Basle when he faced a similar situation. To day the big occaision and the prospect of reaching the semi-final must have made him more nervous. However, I have nothing to complain he had a wonderful year and I am sure next year he will be firmly in the top ten. The cream always rises to the top. Vamos Fena. Well done Gaston and I wish you luck tomorrow.

Well said, NicoFan. For me Fena, is a fantastic player to watch, and we must not forget how much joy he gives all his fans. I feel very sad that he lost, as you said, I am sure he is devastated at his loss. Howeve, we must keep in perspective his improvements physically and thtactical aspects of the game. No one knows as much as the players themselves how hard it is to close matches, when one is leading by such a margin as he was in the second set. It is easy to comment and throw brickbats from the outside, and to label people as chokers, or what not, then to actually close out the matches. Even Federer lost to Gasquet, when he had 5 match points. So, no player is immune to doubts that spring up in the mind. After all Gonzo is human and not an automaton, so we must respect him for all he has achieved and for actually trying. I am sure he will be in the top nxt year, without any dout I can say that. As for all his detractors, and especially those who resort to name calling, I wish they would, look into their own hearts and ask themselves how many times have they been in a situation like this and come through successfully.

I wish you could hear some of his interviews in spanish... He simply doesn´t have any faith in himself. Once he was asked, "What`s the last time you though: "What am I doing here? Why do I do this?"? And he answered: "10 minutes ago, while training". That says it all....

I'm not doubting that. I'm doubting whether this has convinced anyone that he can play on quicker surfaces. Yes, this was an excellent and unexpected win, but he was very close to losing 6-1 6-3. I applaud him for pulling it out, but this along with a win over Puerta doesn't convince me.

Now, a win over Federer could change my mind. Go on Gaston, prove me wrong :yeah:

Not bad for Gaudio this year. He didn't tank and won two matches. That's two matches more than I thought he would win two weeks ago, so he at least he surprised me.

Exactly. He won twice but one was against the door and the other one was against a solid player who flew over to Shanghai as a in-progress replacement. It's nice to see the fight but they are hardly ground breaking victories. Now if he beats Fed...

I wish you could hear some of his interviews in spanish... He simply doesn´t have any faith in himself. Once he was asked, "What`s the last time you though: "What am I doing here? Why do I do this?"? And he answered: "10 minutes ago, while training". That says it all....

Didn't know that...........thanks for telling me.

Gaston,

You gave one of the happiest tennistic days of my life. Thanks so much for sending Gonzalez back to La Reina...

To be a top ten, a player needs a brain. Gonzalez is brainless.

Ha ha muy gracioso.. (A todas estas no tengo nada contra tu país- Me cargó tu actitud)

Si, te lo digo y nada..
A todas estas cuando un favorito mio gana no acostumbro a reirme del otro........

Wow Gaudio and Oscar Hernandez are the 2 faves for Wimbledon. Gaudio has no selief belief, then tommorrow I will discover that he has a good backhand, great to see the learning curve moving at such a fast rate.

VAMOS GASTON!!!!!!!

I never believed he could come back, and after going up a break in the third set only to have Fena break back I thought he was going to lose it, but all credit he fought hard and overcame his self doubt and inner demons and controlled his temperament :worship:

I feel sorry for Gonzo, he came close and for much of the match was the better of the two but sadly one of them had to lose.

The same Gaston that served up a bagel with ham in Buenos Aires no? :p

On a serious note- if Roger plays the way he did against Coria in the 2nd set of their match it is more than likely :tape:

It all depends if Roger will be patient enough to set the point up and finish it, and keep the UE error count down. Gaston is a very crafty player but unlike Fena doesn't have the type of game that could blow you off the court so it's all about being consistent, mixing up your shots, knowing when to attack and executing well. However, if Gaston can hit some of the backhands down the line he hit today, it will be a very interesting match and I think if they get into long rallies and Gaston can keep Federer back with his excellent length he could win a high percentage of those rallies.

Ugh, Feña.

Credit to Gaudio for hanging in there early in the second, but Gonzalez had far too many gifts to offer. And Gaudio was simply more solid when it counted. An entertaining match, at least.

Good luck to him against Feds. Hope it is just a good match all around from both sides. What a treat!

I just finished seeing it and it was an incredibly exciting match. Gaston showed again the fighter that he can be, he was in a position where it would have been very easy to give up but he continued to believe despite all the ups and downs and having to hold to stay in the match doing it very easy. Then that 5-5 game was pretty amazing the 30 all point I actually think Gaston simply deserved for staying in the rallie for so long and losing that point probably caused the DF for feña. I never believed he could come back at all from 1-6 3-5, from the 3 mp 4-5 in the 3rd. AMAZING
