He has many points to defend. If I'm not wrong, last year, he reached the semis and lost to Mathieu, right? Hope he can play a good tennis this week and sustain his position. Go Marat!!! :bounce:

Lilly, you're english is great! Even more impressive considering its your third language. :)

Yes, Marat reached the semis last year losing to Mathieu. But to be honest, i don't care much about points atm. I just want him to be healthy and injury-free. Thats more important than some numbers.

Well it was his first real match after 5 months and you cant expect wonders, you have no confidence at all. he fought hard and did hit 20 aces and some good points. seems like in the end he had not the energy anymore... and Black is a weird opponent, a lil like Santoro.
anyway he needs time! and the support of his fans.

He lost
The most important thing is his health. And he seems completely recovered from injury. It's nice to know that he's back. :)
He'll find his confidence and best physical conditions soon.
Hope to see him playing in Madri and Paris.

Jessi
10-01-2003, 08:14 PM
:bigcry:

Its sad that he lost esp. when it looked like he had it there at 4-1 BUt he played and finished the match!! Thats a victory in itself! It would have been terrible if he retired or was unable to finish the match. Instead, he played a competitive match and showed great fighting spirit. I could sense Marat really wanted to win...he fought hard and didn't give up when things got tight. He hung in there and gave himself a chance...he just ran out gas at the end.

Jessi
10-01-2003, 08:16 PM
But the best news is his wrist seems to be healed! Yay!! He just needs more matches and the rest will take care of itself.
This year is a washout anyways so every match he plays from now on is a bonus. I just want him to stay healthy and try to gain confidence for next year.

GO MARAT!!!

There are only positivies to take from this match. His wrist seems to be healed *knock on wood* and his seems very hungry and determined. It will be a slow climb back but he'll get there. He's Marat Safin after all! ;)

Right now, i just feel excited, hopeful and optimistic.

Shadow
10-01-2003, 08:45 PM
i totally agree with you, Sis :)
the main things is that his wrist seems to be healed and the rest will come with TIME! He needs more matches and get his confidence back. and like he said "its like love, when you look too hard you dont find it, when you let it happen naturally it will come" ;) He will be back!
Anyway i will always support him :)

here is a lil from what Marat said in his interview:
Vassily posted that at the www.theguyfromrussia.com board.

Do you think that we should view the match against Black as a a bad sign or a good one? Should we focus on the loss, or the fact that it took Black 3 sets? It is amazing how much Marat forgot how to play, but maybe he played well...
I'd say that this result is not bad, for a first match, and that Marat just has to play more. Hopefully he seems to know that himself. He even smiled on the interview:
Safin:"Of course I'm upset that I lost. I know that it will be fine when I get over it. I haven't played for a long time, so I need to get my confidence back and regain my physical conditioning. Next up for me is Lyon, Madrid, St. Petersburg and Paris. I will play all of them and I really need to win some matches to get that confidence. Of course, I have a very strong desire to come back, but I know there will be psychological difficulties.

On the possibility of needing surgery: "It was a possibility, I had some problems. The long absence influenced me a lot. And after that break, it's definitely tough to get right back out and play. My confidence is obviously missing and there is even a little fear out there with the wrist."

On his time away from the game: "I went traveling in the mountains in South America. Went to Yosemite National Park... I went fishing also. The biggest fish I caught was a trout about this big [hands 10 inches apart]. I was just resting, thinking about life."

As you can see he is planning to play a lot. Lyon, Madrid, St. Petersbourg, BERCY.

Thanks, Andrea.

Marat sounds good, really good. I don't sense any sadness or bitterness from him at all. Just desire and hunger to get back to the game he loves. I think this time off has been a blessing in disguise. It has given him a new perspective not only about life but also his career and a newfound passion for the game.
What can i say, i love him!! :)

SAFIN FIRED UP TO RETURN TO THE TOP
Sporting Life

Russian star Marat Safin claims he is ready to return to the top echelon of world tennis as he prepares to resume competition after six months struggling with a serious wrist injury.

The 23-year-old has been bothered by his injury for six months and in July finally was forced to take a break from the game.

Safin has spent the past two months relaxing and recovering while watching his rivals on television.

"I missed tennis a lot, really," Safin said.

"Every time I was watching a tournament on television I was saying to myself: 'this is you who should be playing that match and winning it.

"I was playing well at the start of the year, I defeated Juan Carlos Ferrero 6-4 6-3 at the Barcelona semi-finals, and I was feeling well when I arrived in Rome.

"But my injury changed everything."

After reaching the Australian Open third round, Safin missed out on the French Open, Wimbledon and the US Open.

"I have had the time to think about things, my situation and my ambitions," Safin added in L'Equipe.

"I love tennis, it has given me a lot of joy but I want more."

He hopes to be back next month for the Madrid and Bercy Masters Series - which he won in Paris last year.

"I am going to try to finish the year the best I can, in order to start the new one completely fresh," he said.

"It's as if I was starting back from scratch. I would like to be ready for Madrid and Bercy and show all the other players that I am still dangerous.

"It would be good to finish the year in the top 50. But I hope that the year 2004 will be my year.

"I want to be back into the top 10 and target the world number one spot."

Safin feared his return.
2 October 2003
Kremlin Cup Tournament

Marat Safin was Russia's last hope for more solid representation in the second round of the Kremlin Cup. Indeed by the third day of the tournament, only two of the eight players of our country in the mens singles remained: Igor Andreev and Yevgeny Kafelnikov. Alas, Marat, after giving us hope in the second set, he changed direction in the third .

[Match recap: not included]

However, at the press conference, in which Marat arrived only forty minutes after the end of the match, he very quickly cheered up, repeatedly causing explosions of laughter with his answers.

How much is your trainer responsible for your failure today?

The trainer is not the problem. For a long time, it's been too complicated to return tennis, to attain the same standard that I had before the injury. It is simply necessary to play a sequence of matches so that my confidence will return. Everything will arrive in the course of time. So the trainer is not at fault. I'm the one to blame.

You are upset by the result?

If I start to get upset on this occasion, then generally it can't be helped! Nevertheless I took one set , and I had a good chance in the third. But I didn't have the strength or the practice.

They said you came close to needing an operation?

There was this choice: either to have an operation or a month to walk in the gypsum. [a month of nothing] To me it was an obvious choice - I disappeared from the circuit. Everything came together. I trained for only one and-a-half weeks. In that time, you understand, it's not enough to be restored to health; the hand aches a little, even now. It is very complicated to force yourself to hit the ball to the left. It is painful, it is terrible and there is no confidence... But I attempted to play, it is necessary to win at least several matches this year. I hope that in the following week I will feel better. In the first match I won one set - its not so bad anymore. Also, I've got an entire month to play!

Probably, it was terrible to return to the courts after this injury or did you feel something more like fear?

I felt the desire to win, and it is terrible. Try wearing a cast for five months and then playing on court! When you haven't played for five months, you feel different on court . You don't know what to do, where to run. The speed seems considerably faster. Even a player, who is three hundredth in the world and not playing his best was playing too fast for me! I could not "read", where he was hitting the ball. Yes, I couldn't even return a serve in the first round/set! Therefore it was terrible. It is terrible to hit to the left. To me it was very painful, when I broke twice. So that now each time, when I hit to the left, I fear any impact; you are constantly holding your hand, that's why the ball flies slowly. Blake - he's an experienced player, he knows how to play.

Did you keep up-to-date with the tennis world?

No, I was occupied with my own matters. I have enough problems to deal with away from tennis. Naturally, I know who won the Grand Slams. But if I'm honest, I know nothing!

So how did you spend your time, if it's not a secret?

I rested. I thought! I thought about my life, what is necessary, I searched for a way out of [this] situation. On the whole, I had cockroaches in my head. I will play, I won't play... They then said that the operation was necessary, since it is [im]possible to manage without it. I was ready to play in Paris, in Wimbledon, in America... also didn't happen! In the final analysis they hung gypsum for the entire month. [they wasted time for an entire month] I went into the mountains, I caught fish. What didn't I do! But then my desire for tennis reappeared. The desire to win: but physically, and psychologically this is very complicated. Time is necessary. But not everything is as bad as it seems. I know how to play tennis, and that is a good start.

But what fish did you catch?

Trout, this big (Marat separates hands approximately 25-30 centimeters).

Small!

It was! We drove for a rest, it was a seven hour ride from Los Angeles, into the cordilleras.

What is the first thing you do when you arrive in Moscow? Do you think the city has changed?

I caught up with Rosset, who arrived in Moscow for the thirteenth time. He really loves this city. And he noted that Moscow has changed alot, - illuminations have appeared. At night it's a fairytale city. In the daytime, of course, it's not very [romantic]. The city grows, new houses appear, restaurants, streets become cleaner. I hope, after several years, Moscow will become the most beautiful city.

Where will you play before the end of the year, has that been decided?

Yes Lyon, Madrid, Saint Petersburg, Paris. Everything is already planned.

Do you have any comments on the Davis Cup arrangments? [Belorussia & Russia teaming up?]

Well let us go to Minsk, let us look at how we do with them. I do not know, it will come down to marrying our teams in the following year. I talked with Kafelnikov [?] , and he said that it is going to be the end of his career. But then, after learning the results, he mentioned: "We will go to Minsk...". In fact, times it is assembled into Belorussia, then will play in Davis's goblet. He clearly is going to attempt a trip there. [sorry, not a very good translation: I'm working on it!]

I don`t think he looks too thin but he definetly has lost some weight. Probably because he lost muscles also, you know with not playing and training all the time. After he plays some time he will regain ;) :)

and he went fishing ;) lol, really cant imagine that! would love to see ;)

Look at this quote from a 1998 Marat interview (I found this at TGFR):

Q Do you go to Bullfights?

M. No. I don't like that type of thing. And I don't like fishing either.

Or how a man can change, eh? ;)

When men like to be in a quiet place to think they go fishing. He says he has done lots of thinking ;)

I LOVE the Barcelona outfit. It's the best outfit they had made this year. It also helped that Marat himself was looking fine back then ;)
Clean shaven and already a nice suntan :lick:

What "other" things are you suggesting Jessi? ;)

Blasphemy! He is still looking mighty fine... just needs to get rid of that awful goatie :p

Jessi

Speaking of goaties....

I work part time in a supermarket here and today I had a client who reminded me of Marat. He really isn't as good looking as Marat, not even close actually ;), but his nose, mouth and goatie reminded me of Marat. I looked at the guy three times :D. Hope his wife or girlfriend or whoever she was didn't notice lol ;)

Jessi

did you ask for his number? ;)

I think i need to move cos i've yet to meet or see a guy who resembles Marat, lol

Hamburg 2000 was a heartbreaker! 7-6 in the 5th

Marat was very magnanimous in defeat though...serving beer to Guga and his coach. Gotta love him!

Another interview after the match from gazeta.com translated by Mariam (:worship: ) on Christine`s board :

How do you explain todayís loss?
I havenít played in a long time, and now it is very hard for me to get myself back to my previous form. I have to gather confidence in my own abilities, play a few matches, the miscalculation on coachís ( trainerís?) part had nothing to do with it.

Are you really disappointed by todayís loss?
Yeah I have nothing better to do than get upset by losses like this. (Said w/sarcasm). I won one set today, was very close to winning another, and for the overall victory I just lacked simple strength and match practice. After one and a half week of practice itís unrealistic to expect to play on a high level.

There were some talks about you having a surgery.
I had two options: have a surgery or walk around with gypsum on the hand for a month. I got lucky; I walked around with gypsum, and the wrist ligaments grew together normally. The hint of the pain in the hand is still there, however and itís hard for me to make myself hit the ball. Iím scared that the previous pain will return.

Are you planning to play again this year?
Yes, of course. Iíll play in Lyon next week and Iím already ready to show more concise (to the point) tennis than I did today. Today I won a set; tomorrow Iíll win a match; I feel better and better every day. Iím planning to play in all the remaining tournaments, Lyon, Madrid and St. Petersburg.

How did you perceive the draw for Davis Cup, where the Russian team got Belarus?
Nothing special; will go to Belarus yet another time. Kafelnikov was kind of going to leave tennis, but he is not stopping, therefore weíll go with Zhenia, and will see Minsk.

What can you say about todayís opponent?
Itís very hard not to play for 5 months. Although Black is nothing special, today he was too quick for me, I couldnít anticipate where he was going to hit the ball. In addition to everything, it was very hard for me psychologically. I have already torn the ligament twice, and that, believe me, is an unbearable pain. The fear to injure it again is still weighing on me.

Did you follow tennis during your absence?
To tell you the truth, not really. I know who won the Grand Slams, but I was occupied with my own problems. I relaxed, thought about life, went fishing in the mountains...

How was this trip to Moscow?
With every year, the city renovates to the better. I went out to dinner last night with Rosset, who, if Iím not mistaken, is here [in Moscow] for the thirteenth time. And all my colleagues overseas ask me howís Moscow. For the majority of the tennis players the trip to Kremlin Cup is not limited to tennis, theyíre also interested in the city.

Isnít it a pity to part with the Moscow fans so early?
In that question lays the answer. Of course, I was hoping to please the native crowd longer, but what can you do, thatís life.

Interview by Marina Skibina for the St Petersburg Times

J : Hi Mr Safin! It's been quite a while since we've last seen you on a tennis court. You had to stop playing for a few months... because of an injured wrist, now that you're back, how do you feel ?
MS : I feel better... I hope that i'll find my game very soon. My wrist is still a bit sore, but I'm much better now! But when you come back its always difficult.. the other guys, they are playing so fast... They haven't been granted a six month break! (laughing)

J: Do you have any explanation about the cause of this injury ?
MS : In my opinion, it is because of the end of last season, I had to play too many matches : I won in Paris twice : Bercy and the Davis Cup.. had too little time to rest before the beginning of this season.. before the Australian tournaments... you know, that's really hard to keep the pace up.... When you see players like Ferrero thinking of skipping the Australian Open because of the Davis Cup....

J: Do you find it hard to come back like that ? Is it the first time for you to come back after a so long and serious injury ?
MS: Of course it is difficult! I couldn't use my left wrist for a few months... I couldn't play tennis at all, tried new sportsÖ I wanted to try roller-skating or go ice-skating but I was told that it wasn't really careful for my wrist!! (laughing)

J : It looks as if you had fun though!!! What else have you done during all this "free time" ?
MS : I travelled a bit, went fishing, went to the movies, watched my Simpsons DVDs,
spent time with my family and my friends. And I'm really proud of my little sis' who has won a tourney this year... and as we have a kind of tradition between the two of us, I gave her a little present : a little black and white cat called Tolstoi... but as she travels a lot now... he is to stay in Moscow with our Dad...

J: Are you still coached by Denis Golovanov ?
MS : "coach" isnít the proper word, he is more a friend who travels and practises with me, and he doesnít help me only for tennis, he sometimes helped me cooking!!! I'm sure he'd be an excellent cook !!!! (laughing)

J : You'll soon have to defend your title in Bercy, are you worried about that ?
MS : Worried? Why would I be worried ? you know, I'm 23.... I'm living on my passion, I'm happy in life.. I'm happy to play again! and what a pleasure to go to Paris! I love the atmosphere, I love Bercy, I have always been lucky there and the fans are great!!

J: Let me wish you good luck for Bercy and the rest of the season!
MS : Thank you!
