Roger's chances at the French.

Is anyone else feeling enthusiastic about Roger's chances at the French? I was rather impressed by his showing this year and I think that match could have been different, had the conditions and time been a little different. I don't think Nadal is that much better than him on clay, the question is will Roger play enough warm-up tournaments or is he willing to devote himself to the clay court season at this point in his career ? His main focus in Wimbledon, but what a gift it would be to have the Roland Garros & Wimbledon in one. I certainly can't wait until next year's Roland Garros, Roger will certainly if he puts his mind to it outclass the Spaniard. I really think he is a clay court specialist, some people see that as a joke ... but he has a winning record against most clay courters aside from Kuerten and he's beaten Coria each time they played in Hamburg.

This topic has probably been raised before, but I'm curious to get a more recent output of opinion. I think the deciding factor will be his health.

I believe he said in a recent interview that he would shift his focus to RG soon, because that's the slam he hasn't won yet. I forgot where I read it from, but it definitely wasn't long ago.

As for his chances, I really don't know enough to comment on it, since I missed the whole clay season this year.

He will win RG 2006.

Pretty darn good. In all likelihood he is going to have to go through Nadal but if he plays a clean match, he will win even on clay. Of curse playing a clean match against someone like Nadal on clay is easier said than done.

Me too, and I can't say I am any worse off for it :tape:

On a serious note- I didn't see his match against Nadal but many have been saying that he was his equal and more throughout most of the match and he only started and finished badly. I would like to believe that, but I have heard so many conflicting reports about the match it is hard fr me to judge.

He probably can beat Nadal but he will have to be 100% focused and not make too many errors and even then he would probably win 7-6(6),6-7(4),7-5,2-6,15-13.

I think they are good as I wished him good luck for RG 06 during Davis Cup...
He can beat Nadal if he is aggressive. IN this second set this year he was totally in control and he produces enough top spin, especially on his forehand, to beat him. Pressure will always be on his shoulders in RG but we know he can cope with it pretty well. If he stays behind his baseline he won't win because he cannot "steal" time from there on clay and with his speed and topspin Rafa will always prevail. Federer is an attacking player, he will win RG the way Noah, Edberg or Rafter performed there, attacking, taking the net IMO.

RG is the first pirority

Davis Cup, just wait his compatriots become mature!

Also after he wins enough ATP singles (around 50-60) and Grand Slam titles (around 10-12) and he feels he should undertake national honour (as 27-30 years old). He will turn his target at Davis Cup!

I'm optimistic about RG 06 as well. He's clearly at least the 2nd best player on clay. Aside from a fluke, he will reach the final. If it's not Nadal across the net, he will win. If it is Nadal, he will have a harder time -- but I think he can beat him. His performance in the SF this year was oddly flat -- Nadal is a formidable opponent, but Rogelio can play better than that, especially in a final.

I think Roger should S/V a lot more on his first serve against Nadal on clay. Had he done more of that he would have won. Roger can win RG next year. If will be very hard for Nadal to stay around with such a physical game.
