Well it's not how I wanted to see Nalbo play Shanghai, I wanted him to qualify and earn it for himself.
However he's gonna play, and good luck Nalbo.

Just like last time, he's in the toughest group.
Realistically he has to beat Coria and Ljubicic to make the semis, although nobody knows how Fed will play.

Ok, I just saw an interview with David in the airport before leaving to Shanghai. He said he was very happy to be playing the Masters, and that he had to changed his lugagge, he had all the things packed to go fishing and had to change it to tennis things. He started training in the last minute because he was already thinking on vacations, but he said that playing the Masters Cup is the best thing ever. :)

That's great Jazz :D i am glad to see he is in the good mood. So, he is already on the plane right?

jazz_girl

Yeah, he went in the same plane as Mariano and Gastón. Apparently, the ATP called David telling him that he should go to Shanghai because at least, one more player, was gonna withdraw and they wanted him there to play. So he got on the plane, without knowing that Andy had already withdrawn.

I had this hunch for weeks - that he wouldn't qualify but that enough people would pull out so that he would be in Shanghai anyway... But now that this became true I'm really amazed...

If he wins one match 1720+100=1820 , then he would take the 10th position

I was present at live Opening Ceremony today!! :woohoo: It is fantastic!!! David is the last one appeared, he said to the media he is very happy to qualify at the last minute as the last one, and when the host asked him to pronounce the Chinese unique form "唐装" (Tang Zhuang) he wears in Chinese, he was doing well :haha: (a really funny scene, David, what the hell actually you pronounce?), and Roger & Gaston applaud him a lot at that time!! and all the other players burst into big laugh even himself~~ Then he was going to the masters team, and talking with Nadal a lot. (Gaston was talking with Roger a lot) He looks very happy and energetic.

Besides, I also saw Vicky and his mother there. Vicky seems happy, she talked with Carla when they were waiting the players coming.

I met Mariano at the show, he didn't show up in front of the media like other players because he is only an alternate. But he is very nice to the fans , and also very happy even he can't wear that unique form to show up.

Some Nalbo quotes ahead of the TMC....

"I'm not 100 per cent to start tomorrow and he's not 100 percent," said the former Wimbledon finallist. "I finished the season and was almost on holiday. I was ready to go fishing in south Argentina."
"This is definitely the toughest group," admitted Nalbandian.

That's his story....have a commanding lead, then surrender it with careless errors. Why can't he play like he's in charge, rather than play "catch up" with his opponent. Roger is not a player you want to surrender a lead to. And hats off to Roger...he took his chance when he saw it. That's why he's the champion he is.

Perhaps...but Ljubicic and Coria are nothing to sneeze at.

Every player at a TMC is tough, but Nalbo can beat both Ivan and Coria. Doesn't necessarily mean he will though.
Only Ivan's aces saved him in Madrid and beat Coria at the Aussie this year fairly comfortably in the end.
I haven't seen the match yet, but perhaps towards the end of the match he got sucked in a little too much by Fed's aura.

I haven't seen the match yet, but perhaps towards the end of the match he got sucked in a little too much by Fed's aura.

Perhaps he can beat one of these two...or maybe both. But he has to in order to make the semis.
What happened to David, was that he thought too far ahead. 3-1 and 40-30, followed by a couple of careless errors by David was all Roger needed to get back in the match.

Anyway after the dust settles, Nalbo shouldn't be too hard on himself.
I know Fed's been out injured, but not many players would've pushed him the way Nalbo did.
By all accounts, he's in good nick and this bodes well for Tuesday. It will probably be Coria on Tuesday.

Now, this particular shirt's cut, color, and design is very attractive on him. Why he never consider wearing such a thing, I'll never know. Unfortunately, he doesn't realize that the "wilder" styles suit him more than do many of the others.

He really played a great match ! I watched him , and actually thought he would win because he was focused on his match and made great shots...however he made a couple of unforced errors and unfortunately just when he had to save breakballs !! But Roger admitted in the post match interview he thought he was going to lose...such a pity ! Just check the stats at the end ot he match , Nalbi won more points than Roger ! :yeah: I hope he's not too disappointed because he really could have won...and I wish he had a bit of luck and felt self-confident in his next two matches to make it to the semis !

David said that he really felt a little bit tired during the 3rd set. Besides he thought due to his 1st serve faults , he did not play very well in the 3rd set.And that's maybe the problem. He likes Shanghai very much :p

Hi everyone, I am just back from the court...sorry for the late, coz i have to finish watching all the doubles matches, coz i love doubles.

Here's some report. As you saw on TV, David played a really really good match, even he lost finally. :yeah:

He practised with Coria before the match for a while, and seems very relaxed, while I was worried about him coz he said in former interview that he felt himself not in good form, because he was just informed to play TMC at last minute and have to back from his holiday preparation.

This match is very close actually. Roger played just so so at beginning, but David gets into the rythm very soon today. His serving is ok, and his backhand works really well. But when he got 3 BPs in the 1st set, he just wasted them all (not the 1st time I saw from his match, so I am not too surprised :o ). I think the problem can be his running forehand is not stable, easily got errors. After Fed held that tough serving game, he just raised his games, and broke David (Fed's returning is very well, that caused much trouble to David's serving, especially David's serving is not strong enough). Though David lost the 1st set, I still thought those two were really close today, and David would have chance in 2nd one.

And God, yes. David played really well in 2nd set!! His forehand was more stable and powerful that time, plus his fabulous backhand, making Fed really annoyed. Fed's the errors were increasing, but still play ok. It's just because David played too well. His baseline is very sharp and accurate, while Fed can do nothing to him. I think many of you did watch this match, so you know how well he played ;) He won 2nd set 6-2, a stroke to Fed, pushing to the final set.

David kept his level at beginning of 3rd set, and he did break Fed first by 3-1. He really did have the chance of winning this important match at that time!! but in the following serving game, when he leads 30-0, he was just slack a bit, and Fed's fighting spirit was stired, he played unbelievable 2 returnings, and used his backhand to make David running and finally find the chance to smash his forehand winners. David was actually a bit frustrated when he was broken back, and throw the racquet lightly. Fed woke up in following games, held his own serving and broke David again...which was crucial to the whole match. Finally David lost this match by 3-6 6-2 4-6. But this is still a wonderful match from him, and it's the best live court match I ever saw from him :yeah: (much better than any China Open matches :o )

Some points:
1, David's serving is ok, not bad. But as we all know his serving is always not strong, that gave Fed chance of breaking coz Fed is one of the best returners.

2, David's backhand and returning is really well today, almost flawless. However, his forehand should be more stable, keep the errors down.

3, He made several front net points today, but sometimes his time going to the front of net were not good, and let Fed pass him easily. He should be careful when facing Coria and Ljubo.

4, The mental.....again. Get 3 BPs, but couldn't break; Be broken twice in line after 3-1 leading in final set. PLEASE TRY YOUR BEST TO FOCUS ON EVERY POINT EVEN I KNOW IT'S REALLY HARD FOR YOU TO DO IT!!

I saw Vicky and David's mother (forget her name) watching his match, hope they were still satisfied with David's match today, even without the ideal result. If David can keep his level, he can beat Coria and Ljubo. VAMOS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ljubo played only just so so, I think his performance today is surely worse than his Madrid and Paris. He got many errors, but of course the serving and backhand are still powerful and dangerous. Coria lost to him easily, apparently he is not adapting this fast court. If David can play like today, he can beat Ljubo. Beware Ivan's backhand returning.

I'm sorry that David lost as he is one of the very few players who can truly bother Rogi -- he still can from the match accounts I've been reading [still haven't seen this match on TV yet... not until 12.30am tonight... how duh...]. Rogi knows how dangerous David is, esp on this surface [after all, David has won Basel and Rogi still hasn't]. I know people have discussed David's mental but what I want to know is why he can play well yet still lose a match?? I don't understand. Does he think about it too much? Does he suddenly become afraid to win?

Surely David can win so many more matches AND titles -- it's a real shame he lost to Marat last yr in Madrid, to Moya in Roma, but esp to Pandy in Montreal03 [I think the long rain delay there didn't help]. He IS so talented and I do enjoy watching his game [as I love watching Rogi and Gaston too]. He may try to be macho but he really is like a little boy sometimes.

VAMOS, DAVID, win your next RR matches! ;)

VAMOS, DAVID, win your next RR matches! ;)

All Nalbo fans know how you feel. I'm proud of his game and what's he's achieved in the game so far, but with him you always get the feeling that he can do more. I don't know it's difficult to explain.....
I watched his match against Fed in full yesterday, and he played so well to get into the winning position. Fed dominated the first set and a half and Nalbo just got inspired and turned it around by being more aggressive. Trust me, not alot of players would have been able to do that against Fed.
On the day he just lacked that killer instinct to go over the line, maybe it's a confidence thing that comes with winning the big matches. We all know Nalbo hasn't won many big matches this year, unlike Fed who maybe had that self-belief in the tight stages.
Anyway that's my rant over.....

Hopefully he'll learn from it and win his last 2 matches. :)

'aight then Miss.

I want to him to get to the semis, as well - of course.
But as long as he plays decently - I think I'm ok with that. I was not expecting him to be there anyway. :)

Coria's quotes:

"It's gonna be a very even match, I think we're gonna play more points, there's gonna be more show here but well, the truth is that he plays much better in fast surfaces and I'll try to do the best I can. But Nalbandian is the favourite to win. Here, with this surface and the way I'm playing, I'm honest...I never imagined being here, qualify with my own points. So I'm at ease, enjoying and the truth is I'm happy cause I gained back the willingness to fight"

David's quote:

"Por más que haya perdido es importante haber ganado un set. En este tipo de definiciones siempre es importante ganar games. Claro que es preferible siempre ganar y con lo cerca que estuve, es una lástima..."
"Even if I lost it's important having won a set. In these kind of definitions is always important to win games. Of course, it's even better to win and I was so close, it's a shame..."

Hey David....don't be discouraged. If Roger loses to Ljubicic in straight sets-and you win your next two matches in straights-then you will finish as the top player in your group.

Serving aside, it was a nice match to watch with loads of great rallies. It was a bit of torture, and I'm glad I only got to watch the second set.
Must say though, the game Nalbo won to win the match was stunning. A BH winner and 2 FH winners, Nalbo at his best and unplayable. :yeah:

I only got to see the second set.
He played well but not amazing if you know what I mean.
A little bit more discipline and he could've won the match with less hassle. Don't wanna be too picky, he won and that's the most important thing.

Some post-match quotes from Nalbo...

"I had many ups and downs and the truth is I didn't feel well the whole game due to the change in schedule," said Nalbandian, playing in his second Masters Cup.

"I have not really prepared well for the tournament. I would really have liked to have come a week ago.

"Never did I feel good or agile out there. The other day when I played with Federer it was during the day and it was much better."

"If I play as well as I did against Federer I think I have a very good chance of getting through,"
