Biggest disappointments of 2005?

We have the most improved players in 2005, so what about the biggest disappointments? Here are some I thought of...

Verdasco (I thought he was going to become a force this year, he just isn't consistent)
Fish (ranking falling from 20 odd to below 150, dreadful!)
Philippoussis (he was in the 80s at the beginning of the year, had injury problems, still an awful collapse, but he can redeem this and get back up there in January)
Mathieu (I had a gut feeling he would finally showcase his talents and win some titles, but he just can't do it mentally)
Henman (after last year, not passing a QF.. losing tamely in USO, early Wimby exit)
Safin (Yes he won the AO, but still after his strong finish to 2004 it was a bad year afterward)
Rusedski (no luck with draws, didn't get past round 2 in a slam)
Moya (fallen in rankings, losing early in AO and USO and early exits during the clay court season)

Your thoughts?

Nalbandian.

after a great start at the AO i thought he'd win a title or something, but no. he's exactly like dementieva that way. consistent at the slams, have a fantastic ground game, awesome returns and are all court-all surface players but their title count is so low.

Verdasco (I thought he was going to become a force this year, he just isn't consistent)

He´s currently in his best ATP race position ever if I´m not wrong, so it´s a bit harsh to include him here. Of course, I see where you´re coming from as I also think he´s far from fulfilling his potential

Federer....He lost 3 matches, he shouldn't have lost any.

Almagro, expected this to be his breakthrough year.

Oh, and brazilian tennis in general. Guga's comeback was a failure, Mello could hardly win a match, and Saretta... well, better leave him alone.

Coria is the biggest disappointment for me, despite his ranking and all of that other bullshit ... he still didn't win a GS or even close to one ... kept coming in 2nd place to Nadal... plain pathetic.

Definitely Coria, Nalbandian and Moya

I think Hewitt deserved better. He had a long run of bad luck, starting from Safin's remarkable win in the AO. But, he is hopefully being more than compensated by the upcoming family event.

I agree. Except for Safin who at least managed to grab one major title before crapping out for the rest of the year, all these guys had a veddy bad year.

Biggest disappointment for me was Roddick's premature exit at USO. That was dreadful. :o *picks at scab*

Oh, and brazilian tennis in general. Guga's comeback was a failure, Mello could hardly win a match, and Saretta... well, better leave him alone.

Unfortunately I have to agree with you and can't quite say future is looking brighter.

Overall, Moya and Henman had horrible seasons, plagued by injuries and bad form, they've gone into such a deep slump I can't see them recovering quite soon, if ever.

Coria and Roddick could've done much more than they did, still I wouldn't call their seasons disappointing. Just some tough losses, some awful (Miami, Montreal, USO and Madrid for Roddick and RG and perhaps Rome to Coria).

Safin is easily the worst thing that happened to tennis. A wash out year for a player that would have given more competition to Roger and better matches across the board.

Edited to say:

I lied: don't I have 2 disappointments, I have 3

1. That Marat played so poorly after winning in Melbourne. I know it's his M.O. - big win, followed by disappointing results - but it's still frustrating (But as a Safin fan, this is what I signed up for).

2. The injuries of the last 2 months. I don't care what anyone says: there are too many tournaments.

3. Coria losing to Ginepri in the USO quarterfinals. I wanted the Agassi/Coria semi so bad, I could taste it!

* Coria not winning more titles and not winning the quarters at the USO
* Nalby continuing his headcase ways
* Gaudio continuing his headcase ways
* Injuries- in particular Gasquet, Safin and Hewitt
* Nadal's loss of spirit at the USO
* Roddick just seeming off
* Moya seeming even more than off
* Guga still not fully recovered from his hip problems
* Hell- Henman's whole year

MTF in general.

I do have to say that I have become more disappointed in MTF lately. It just seems to have become more and more meanspirited and about bashing players and being a "hata" as opposed to praising players (without feeling like praising one means that you need to bash another) or objectively talking about tennis without blinders of prejudice against a particular style or player. I understand that we can't all like the same players or style of play- but I just feel that it has just become nastier in here and things are becoming more and more subjective as opposed to objective. It inches closer and closer to the spirit of WTA World and ...shudder ...the ESPN board every day. Maybe I am just being thin-skinned baby, but I have noticed a change.

Take a look around, it is pretty obvious to see as to why I made that comment, like with any disappointments, there are some positives, just harder to find them.

Hewitt - When he has been fit has played really well but he is owned by federer like everyone else....he will be disapointed of his year. (Also, no big titles since Indian Wells2003 which is shocking for Lleyton)

It was sad when Andre Agassi pulled out of wimbledon again - really wanted to see him back on the turf of London.
Henman - Awful year and its hard to see him recovering from it - he wont be seeded for the AUSopen so it could be another early exit right at the start of the year for him.
Moya - Never rated him anyway and his year was no surprise to me.
Safin - obvious reasons
Phillipoussis - Nightmare year...not sure he can recover
Haas - Expected more from him
Roddick - No big titles and seems at a stand-still in his career
