Ljubicic confirmed for Kooyong tournament

MELBOURNE, Nov 7 (Reuters) - World number eight Ivan Ljubicic will play at the invitational Kooyong Open next January, organisers said on Monday.
Croatia's Ljubicic joins world number one Roger Federer, American Andy Roddick, Germany's Tommy Haas and Argentines David Nalbandian and Guillermo Coria for the tournament in Melbourne from Jan. 11-14.

Two spots remain open in the field for the round-robin tournament, which precedes the Australian Open, the year's first grand slam.

Ljubicic lost the Paris Masters final to the Czech Republic's Tomas Berdych on Sunday.

He has qualified for the Tennis Masters Cup in Shanghai, which begins on Sunday.

Agassi will probably play as well.

Even though Kooyong is only an exhibition tounament that obviously do not award any points, how come it always manages to draw big names every year ? Does it offer BIG appearance fee?

Deboogle!.
12-29-2005, 06:17 PM
Does it offer BIG appearance fee?Probably.

Also there are a few other reasons:

1) it's 3 guaranteed matches, whereas tournaments you could lose early
2) those matches are all of highest quality - Monfils is the lowest-ranked player playing, so where a tourney you might get lower ranked players most of the way through, at Kooyong they're guaranteed 3 decent matches, no players outside the top 100 or anything. Forces them to get into form quickly.
3) it's in Melbourne, so the weather and related conditions are the same. Moreover, it's easier on the players mentally b/c they come a week before, don't have to move hotels, etc. So they're on the same surface in the same city with the same weather in the same hotel and are close enough to Melbourne Park so that they can practice there on the courts there, too, in between the exho. So while getting some matches in, they're also getting used to the actual AO conditions way in advance of their colleagues who are off in Sydney and New Zealand.
4) Several of the guys use this as their only AO preparation - instead of starting Jan 2, they start Jan 11. That's basically adding a whole extra week onto the off-season and considering how short that season is to begin with, an extra week is certainly valuable to them.

Sounds good to me!

I don't know what the actual draw sorts out to be, but Wednesday's OP:

Wednesday 11 Jan 2006 (Starting at 11am)
Roger Federer vs Tommy Haas
Andy Roddick vs Gael Monfils
Ivan Ljubicic vs Guillermo Coria
David Nalbandian vs Nicolas Kiefer

unfortunately since the host broadcaster (channel 7) is the same channel that shows the Sydney International tournament, it is going to be a bit of a juggling act on their part from wednesday onwards. i would say they would show all of federer's and roddick's matches and not bother with the other players. of course if hewitt plays at the same time as either of them in Sydney, they will show his match.

krystlel
01-10-2006, 08:48 AM
I don't remember how much of Kooyong they showed last year, but I do recall that they used to show delayed coverage of some matches later in the night so we'd get to see part of all of the matches. Unfortunately I see that they're only doing that on Friday night. Hopefully we'll get to see at least one match from all players.

I think they'll be showing the matches for whoever's still in the tournament later on: winners vs winners, but I could be wrong. Judging from the schedule tomorrow, it seems that they work the schedule towards suiting the TV coverage so that the first two matches are the ones that they want to show.

should be straight forward rod now, up a break in the 2nd set, he has been very agressive with the returns and fh, though execution still not as sharp as it could be but given its his first match this yr, as expected.

if by chance this match is in progress in 30min i will continue

Nalbandian had a stomach virus and didn't feel well. Kiefer was playing REALLY well though and this match was the most entertaining of the day before the retirement with some great shot-making!!

Probably the same gastro that's been going around here for a few weeks. A few people have been struck down, a woman player retired with it last week and Hewitt nearly pulled out of Sydney with it too.

I like his short haircut--it's as flattering as Roger's.

What is it with the Kooyong exhibition tournament?

They do not appear to have their act together. It's left me with a very negative impression of the event.

e.g. when Murray arrived to play Luczak, ...

"An overzealous security man almost turned Murray back because he did not have the proper credentials, the on-court announcer got his ranking figures wrong"

"match played to the backdrop of a crowd showing more interest in replenishing their glasses than pondering the virtues of the all-court game of the youngster they had seen only in flashes during the small hours of Australia ’s Wimbledon television coverage." [http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,5205-1984313,00.html]

Also, the website was almost useless. The tournament failed to give info on their fairly unorthodox draw system, and provided results almost as an afterthought.

A further gripe is how they have handled the promotional aspects. Sure it would be nice if Coria did interviews in English, but other tournaments deal with that just fine. Translators must be available in Melbourne for the AO e.g. It seems IMHO insulting that they refuse to translate or post any interview with him. I am also disappointed that almost all of the questions and attention at the press conference seemed directed to Federer and Roddick. All the players have fans who want information. :(

I think it's important to keep in mind this isn't a tour event. The score updates on the website after each set are actually better than some tour events.

I agree that not posting a draw is poor, but again, it's an exhibition event. They used to post a draw document that was confusing anyway lol. They post all the press conferences, I think that's great. There are other similarish exhibitions before the French and Wimbledon and they don't provide nearly the same information as Kooyong does, as I recall.

And I mean, it makes sense that a lot of attention was geared towards Andy and Roger - Roger is #1 in the world and gets attention wherever he goes, and Andy is quite popular down there since the El-Aynaoui match a couple years ago.

Good points - it probably is more than the other exhibitions provide. Have to lower my standards for exhibitions. No complaints about giving lots of attention to Roger & Andy, just that none of the players should be ignored IMHO - they all have fans. V. happy for Andy BTW - I hope the US press wakes up & recognizes he is still a great player - seems in fine form for the AO.
