Tomas will all likely go on and win more TMS

Ivan probably will miss the boat, 2005 he had it all going for him and he lost both finals.

Tomas went for it at the start,
bad game from Tomas at start of 3rd, woke Ivan up and Ivan got better and better, looked the more liklier winner.

last game, Tomas went for him and took his 4th chance.

Definitely overrated - he got lucky in all those wins. :o

Seriously, though, I hope this'll translate into a consistent 2006 for him. It's nice seeing the younger (in tennis terms) players doing well. Of course, Ljubicic performed very well, too, and overall, he was definitely the best indoor player of the year (and there's still Shanghai and Davis Cup left to see). Now he needs to translate his success into the Grand Slams, and we should have a very good 2006 for him.

EDIT: And that five set record seems very strong, too. Somewhat like Safin's record in them; it doesn't make very much sense, considering that neither one is considered the best 'mentally' (of course, Safin is probably worse in that regard) .

It makes a lot of sense, they have the talent and at the same time, they have enough time to recover from their mental lapses, though Berdych is no enigmatic volcano like Safin.

What a twist Safin presenting the trophy to someone who is compared to him.

Yep.
He has a very strong mental it seems.
And it looks like the only problem he had was the one every very talented players has: a tendency to fall asleep in the matches he should win easily because he isn't interested enough, gets frustrated easily so it's harder for him to focus maybe... ;)
But as soon as he'll learn that it will be very hard to stop him...

Tomas looked played so well in the 1st and 2nd sets. The 5th set was really close. Sad to see that someone had to lose- in particular Ivan  . Well- congrats to Tomas- glad to see his potential come to full-fruition this week.

Well, not making sense in that you normally wouldn't connotate 'mental blockhead' with 'strong five-set player,' but yeah, that's a good point. It gives both enough time to recover from any meltdown they might have had in the first place, I guess. :)

It takes lots of courage and self-confidence to overcome the beast that is Ljubicic, at one point in the year, let's remember that even Roger found it a rather "challenging" task to beat the Croat.

Great for both men.

Agreed that it was a silly thing to say about Berdych because a blind man can see his potential but you're overdoing the ribbing in my opinion. Nobody has come up with the crap excuses so just wait until somebody is stupid enough to discredit this excellent victory of Thomas.

Wow,
Federer, nadal, and berdych -- T.M.S winners of 2005. Who could have predicted that?

I know! It's quite strange. Federer was never a surprise, but the other two just were so impressive. Nadal obviously has established himself as #2 by a large margin, and Berdych and Gasquet stand out as the upcoming stars for next season, I suppose. There's Monfils, Murray and Djokovic too.

Next year's list ought to be bigger, and quite interesting.

Tough for Ivan. Two T.M.S finals lost in the fifth set. But he gets to go to Shanghai

So true. But what one can do? He just needs to win Davis Cup now. I was cheering for Slovakia, but Ljubicic is clearly THE player of this year's DC and deserves to win this not only for this, but for the amazing season he's on the ATP as well.

i watched the entire match. Tomas was definitely hurting. he winced throughout the massage in the 4th set. i didn't think it was gamesmanship -- it was poor fitness. both commentators thought it was a given that Lju would win -- i did too. but the problem is that Lju did not do an Agassi and have Tomas running back and forth, which would have tired out his legs even more. instead Lju went for the big serves and easy wins. all Tomas had to do was get those serves back bec his groundstrokes did the rest. Lju had no answer for the Tomas forehands.

nice match. ;)

it took more than power to get those crucial break points in the last set. power saved Lju as he got back the 1st three breaks by serving brilliantly. but Tomas won those last two points with craft and skill. he totally deconstructed Lju's game IMO. it's not like he served it out to win -- he broke Lju.

Ivan will continue to have a reputation as a choker until he wins big titles. The fact is, on the main stage he continously fails to deliver. His Grand Slam record is appaling, and he's made strides this season with regard to TMS performances, but he blew a 2 set lead against Nadal in 1 final, and now lost a match he was seriously expected to win. I've seen considerably worse chokes, but no doubt about it, Ivan got tight.

When has been choked before? 2001 or 2002 AO. lose vs Nadal was not a choke. not like he had any MP's

I didn't expect Berdych to finally be able to go all the way this time. He's always fared well against big names but somehow lacks the consistency to go deep in a major tournament. Nice surprise from him though.
As for Ljubicic, I don't think he was too upset. At least he looked rather cheerful at the presentation ceremony. Bet he's glad to finally be able to get some rest.

Hmm. So according to you, Roddick fakes his injury but poor Tomas *clearly* was hurting. Sometimes your eyes seem to work and sometimes they don't.
having watched both matches, yes I did not believe that Roddick was as injured as he was pretending to be. actually i re-watched his match last night (it was repeated on TTC) with a bunch of tennis-playing friends including our coach, and everyone started hooting as he hit these bombs for serves, completely torquing his back and bending his body. it was frankly impossible to serve like that and have a lower-back injury.

then again, in his post-match interview (which i posted), Roddick NEVER said that he was injured. he said only that the back got tight. that is a whole different issue and would explain why he was able to keep serving like that.

Tomas on the other seemed to be lacking in fitness. his leg started cramping up bec he isn't fit enuf. and, as i said before, Lju did not exploit that by running him back and forth like Agassi would have done. this and the frequent massages gave Tomas adequate recovery time IMO.

but we can agree to disagree on this. i have no problem with that.

When has been choked before? 2001 or 2002 AO. lose vs Nadal was not a choke. not like he had any MP's

losing a match to a player, that you are better then is not a choke. if it is 2005 choker of the year goes to Roddick.
For a player of his calibre, his grand slam record is a joke. Therefore, it can be said that he doesn't produce on the big stage, and as such suffers from nerves. This is a bad defeat for Ivan, it was his best ever chance to win a TMS and he blew it. I don't think he'll ever have a better chance.

They do, but each tournament generally has it's own trophy too. Like at Indian Wells, they get a whale trophy. Usually it has something to do with the sponsor.

Anyway, this is great for Berdych. I hope it's a breakthrough tournament for him. :yeah:

Congratulations to Tomas, he really played well and exploited the weekness of the croat. Whoever says, ljubicic choked is a sore loser. I saw the first 3 sets and Berdych had the measure of the croat for the most part. However, credit to ljubicic for fighting to the end. Berdych is so cool, i like his temprament. One thing though he must improve his footwork. In my opinion, in the first three sets his footwork wasn't very energetic.

"I am very happy because this was my first Masters final and my first win and it was such a great match," he said.

Ljubicic said: "Congratulations to Tomas - he killed us all this week."

The Croatian was full of admiration for the style of Berdych's play and said: "The perfect word to describe him is dangerous. You never know what to expect from him, he can do it all.

"He played really well and there wasn't much I could do. I didn't have many chances, he was just too good."

His forehand produces way more errors, cause he is a bit slow at times with the feet and he smothers the ball, when he is not in position. It doesn't happen as often on the backhand.

He hits more winners from that side, but he does smother the ball when he isn't playing well. He is very efficient in his stroke production and doesn't need to take huge swings to generate speed, it seemed this week that his backhand wasn't breaking down overall as much as it has in the past.

His forehand does go off more and the times this week, when he had his weaker period, it was his forehand that went missing and not his backhand, it's a more spectacular shot.

He canīt get such a depth consistently on his bh as on his forehand, and although he takes risks all the times, it may look that his fh can be less reliable, but thatīs just bc he uses it more and takes higher risks with it. I mean, Iīve witnessed really big bh crisis during a match from Tomas (he couldnīt hit one in) that wonīt never happen with his fh. He may miss some of them but not that critically.

I see where you are coming from with this, it would be interesting to see his stats with this week stats on his winners. He does hit more outright winners from his forehand, it just seems he makes more errors from that side, though I hope this becomes clearer over time.

Iīve seen all his matches except against Novak this week and after thinking about ii now, yes, itīs possible there hasnīt been much difference between his fh/bh ue ratio or maybe even his fh has produced more, and thatīs a good sign and maybe one of the reasons heīs done so well here. When he cuts off his bh errors, itīs sick how dangerous he becomes, as although he will miss fhīs he will do by far more damage with them throughout the match. All in all, imo, his backhand is a less reliable stroke than his fh but itīs good to see heīs improving on that concern as he definetely can use that stroke as another big weapon.

Yes, it was great to see all his matches this week apart from the Novak one. One of the commentators was saying that Navratil has said about Berdych. "The ball down the middle with no pace, is his biggest problem, as he sometimes struggles to get side on". Interesting point.

If Navratil can get him to get some good dtl backhands and get his movement sorted then it looks good from here, as he has an outstanding temperament and 6-0 in 5 setters attests to this.

berdych remins me of safin so much its unbelievable and i truly believe he will go on to win a slam..

I agree with you! After the final ended I was thinking that bercy was for Berdych what the USO 2000 was for safin...well..sort of...I think big things are in store for Tomas in the following season! :yeah:

Yes, it was great to see all his matches this week apart from the Novak one. One of the commentators was saying that Navratil has said about Berdych. "The ball down the middle with no pace, is his biggest problem, as he sometimes struggles to get side on". Interesting point.

If Navratil can get him to get some good dtl backhands and get his movement sorted then it looks good from here, as he has an outstanding temperament and 6-0 in 5 setters attests to this.

Interesting indeed. Looking forward to seeing what 2006 he will have.

PD: Verdasco has overcome LaLo in rankings, finally

both players have a great game
i thought this year Ljubicic was the most consistent player of the year really
of course swiss aside
he has been to 9 finals this year & won 2 lost another very tight 5 sets & gave federer a match in each of his finals
Berydech was always shwoing signs of a great talent
better watch out for him in future he didnt beat roger for nothing

Yes, Berdych has a very good base for 2006 to build from and imagine if he plays Safin, they'll be like, hey this guy plays like me. :)

That's great for Thomas! Really a great breakthrough; could he challenge for a Slam next year?

Ivan had a great rebound this Fall. Great year for him,.

This is exactly what the doctor ordered for Tomas. All he needs now is a good draw at the AO and 2006 will potentially become a major breakthrough for him.

Just watched again the final and when Berydch gets broken in 4th set is that kind of ball. Iīve also just remembered he also blew a matchpoint in Madrid against Rochus in the same situation, deep return at the corner which Rochus barely brings it back without any pace and Berdych sends it long from midcourt. Good to know Navratil knows what he has to work on

Navratil has been with him for a while and he seems to understand what's going on and what he needs, also trying to go to the net more than he does, though he is uncomfortable with it. Navratil wasn't too bad in his day and the Czechs do support each other well, you must have loved it when he beat his usual practice partner in the semis. :)

Yes, I know this is a bit late, but have not had internet access and it is good to see some surprising winners of the TMS event and useless fact that Berdych was the lowest ranked player to win a TMS since Portas, as long as he remains relatively free from injury, chances are that he will have a better career than Portas.

Tough loss for Ljubicic, he was a big favourite to win this match, nevertheless I am happy for Berdych that he was able to win and take in some momentum for 2006.
