GO SLOVAKIA!!!!!

Nice to know not only Slovak fans will be cheering them on. I think we will need all support that we can get, this tie being maybe even harder then the one against Argentina. Concerning pictures there will be a lot of them for sure, am taking my camera with me as well.
The salad bowl arrived here yeasterday and all of them are back in trainings in NTC except Mertinak.

savestheday's grandmother is from Slovakia ;)

I have no ties to Slovakia other than my love of their players, though, and they have had my 100% support all season! (even against España :o) :D

I am a little annoyed that Mertinak is playing so many challengers lately, I don't want him to tire himself out! he needs to be with the team preparing!

Well Michal Mertinak lost the doubles finals at the Challanger played two weeks ago in Bratislava playing them with Domino. Judging from the nomination this week for the DC it looks like Domino and Karol Beck will play the doubles on Saturday next week. I heard somewhere that Michal is little injured from a Challanger that he played in russia few weeks ago.

That's why he shouldn't have played that challenger.

I hope they change their minds, to be honest... Karol and Michal have played all the doubles this year. I want them to finish it!

Hopefully Micha will be in fantastic form for DC, but not tired out.

I hope so. I want the Slovaks to be totally fit and ready... while Ivan is overly tired and Mario is overly rusty. :D

Ljubicic and Ancic being tired or rusty, is right now the hope of all Slovaks not only the DC team. But judging from what I saw at the Challanger in Bratislava when Domino and Michal lost in the double finals I do have my doubts about Michal being in the condition to play well next weekend and to that comes that he hasn´t played with Karol for even longer time, who had health problems too.
Anyway, they REALLY want to win this and playing home should give them the final boost.

Can't believe he's (most likely) not playing. How else is the Davis Cup suppose to be interesting (although Goran is involved...)?

And we need more diversity in the Thread Starters and the Last Post By! Not that we don't all love KBF's enthusiasm.

Beck denies doping rumour before Davis Cup final
Thu Dec 1, 2005 1:44 PM GMT
By Martyn Herman

BRATISLAVA, Dec 1 (Reuters) - Slovakia's number two Karol Beck denied failing a dope test earlier this year after being selected on Thursday to play in the Davis Cup final against Croatia.

On Wednesday rumours circulated concerning a possible positive test given by Beck during the semi-final against Argentina in Bratislava, prompting suggestions that 31-year-old Karol Kucera would play in his place.

Beck, the world number 57, had been a doubt for the tie after struggling to overcome a knee injury that has sidelined him since the St Petersburg Open in October.

However at Thursday's draw inside Bratislava Castle, Slovakia captain Miloslav Mecir picked Beck, who will open the tie on Friday against Croatia's world number nine Ivan Ljubicic.

Asked if he had given a positive test, Beck said: "No!"

Of the speculation, he added: "I wasn't surprised because I sort of expected this kind of issue. I have been dealing with this for over two weeks.

"I am concentrating on the match, I mean, I feel fine. I had trouble with my knee, it was aching quite a lot. But over the last few days things have improved significantly. I'm looking forward to the match and hope we win."

Mecir said he had decided his line-up on Thursday morning, adding that the rumours surrounding Beck had been an unfortunate distraction.

"It's really unpleasant to answer questions like this," the former U.S. Open runner-up said. "I don't know the source of the information.

"Definitely it brings an element of discomfort to the team, to the team spirit, but we try to overcome it with our spirit."

LOSING RECORD

Beck has a 1-3 losing record against Ljubicic and will have to break the Croat's 100 percent record in this year's competition if he is to give the hosts a winning start.

"Ljubicic is a great player, his indoor record is absolutely awesome," said 23-year-old Beck. "I have to play at my best to be able to beat him.

"But we also have to take into consideration that Davis Cup is different. There is the psychological element. I will do my best and we'll see what comes out of it."

Providing his knee injury does not flare up, Beck will play in Saturday's doubles with Michal Mertinak and face Mario Ancic in the second reverse singles on Sunday.

Someone on the board says that he tested positive because he smoked marijuana. If that's true, I don't see why he would get suspended from the tour or anything, as it's not performance enhancing.

I just want this all to go away. :sobbing:

Oh my god this sucks sooooo bad!!!!I really hope that is not true! But if it is true why would he smoke marijuana when he knows that they get tested all the time! And he knows that he could get suspended for smokeing marijuana! At least I think he could.Because Greg Rusedski got suspended for doing the same thing. That was a awhile ago though so I dont know if the rules have changed or not.

Well done to Slovakia for making the final!

Definetely. I have seen Beckis play with Michal against Holland and Argentina and then Dominio with Michal loose at Tatra Banka Open month ago. Domino is a singles player playing from baseline, so with Beckis playing doubles with Michal instead Domino, who knows who would be celebrating today....
