Saves a couple of match points. Ferrer was up 8-7 and was serving in the 3rd set TB but couldn't pull it out. Ferrer won more points on his 1st serve but couldn't close the match.

Well... David choked the match away, so I'm not really sure what you're proud of. This shows that Andy isn't playing that well at all, despite his anal ****** of Dominik.

Surprisingly, David was more effective on his 1st serve than was Roddick which has been the story of his year. 3-1 up in the 3rd set TB, 8-7 with match point on his serve but couldn't close it out. Roddick has won two very close 3 setters here so he should be picking up some confidence. He will have to beat Ivan in TB's because I don't see how he will be breaking him.

Roddick didn't play as well as his previous match, but Ferrer played a hell of a lot better than Hrbaty did. Thus, a tight match.

Yeah, David sort of choked when serving for the match at 5-3. :( Roddick did well though to just keep slicing the balls back, knowing that David was tight and would make errors. Wonderful FH pass though by Andy on David's 2nd MP. :yeah:

Did anyone catch the exchanges between A-Rod and Lars Graff? :rolls:

Lars: "Whatever you say is being recorded on video and shown around the world."
Andy: "What if I speak a language they can't understand?"
Lars: "Can you speak Chinese?"

It was a horrible choke from Ferrer and I don't think Roddick was really injured. No way could he be serving at that speed with a back injury. He was just overwhelmed by Ferrer's power in the first set. After the 'injury' break, he managed to deal with it much better.
But got to admit that Roddick vs Ljubicic is infinitely more interesting.

Lars: "Whatever you say is being recorded on video and shown around the world."
Andy: "What if I speak a language they can't understand?"
Lars: "Can you speak Chinese?"They have a running banter everytime they get together.

Henman made the same point earlier this year [that English-speaking players are held to higher standard re. language than players who speak languages that the majority of umpires don't understand.]. Graf was basically agreeing that if Roddick limited any future outbursts to a language he [Graf] couldn't understand (i.e. Chinese), he [Graf] wouldn't have a problem with them.

Why are people proud of Roddick after this win. He knew he couldn't beat Ferrer fairly so he started his ranting and got inside Ferrer's mind. Prime example of gamesmanship, if you ask me.

It's not as if Roddick ranting and raving at umpires and linespeople is anything new and unexpected. It happens in most of his matches. If that is what got into Ferrer's head then there something wrong with Ferrer's head not with Roddick trying gamesmanship.

I saw it and it was a very thought match for Roddick to win...well Ferrer derseved to win as well but Roddick hold when he had to and show he was a champion, able to save match point making ace, or really awesome points.
And I think Ferrer give him the game at 5/3..so Roddick was not serving very rell but he won with heart and what makes the top 5 players.

So, about the match: I'm still kind of in shock over it because I really thought it was over. I underestimated Andy's heart and fighting spirit. Probably because it feels like I haven't seen it in so long but it was great to see it back in action again today.

I don't think Andy will have much of a chance against Ivan tomorrow but I'm still too proud of the heart, effort, and guts he's put forth just in the past three matches alone. And the French crowd loves him. I'm impressed with our little sticky treefrog.

Not sure but his brother had to retire from competition because of his back. With his parents there, I would think it is the last injury he would fake or exploit.

Geeze, people -- a win is a win, he earned it.

If Ferrer can't pull out a match that was in his hands, you give credit to the other player (Andy) for not just giving the match to the guy, make him earn it, and Ferrer didn't step up to the plate.

Andy won it fair and square. Not sure what the injury was about, maybe he was just tight, who cares, it didn't decide the match.

Good win, Andy. Gotta be more consistent against Ljub, but we know you can beat him. :)

What drought are speaking of? The title one (that's like 3 years and a month long so far). Ferrer made the QFs of Madrid and 3rd round at USO (best ever results for him at both).

A great fight by Andy, it is the 2nd time after 2003 that he makes the semis in Paris. David was very close but he was not able to close out the match when he was serving for it.

By the way, i don't believe that Andy was faking the injury. His back was obviously bothering him and his mobility was obviously limited relative to yesterday. Hopefully, it is not something serious and we will enjoy the showdown against Ivan.

In all fairness to Ferrer, he's had quite a year. He witnessed Malisse's incident first hand on court, also Zabaleta was leading when he had to retire with his foot injury, etc.

:secret: Ferrer isn't a claycourter. He's always been able to play on all surfaces except grass, that one eludes most Spaniards.

But it seems very sad that his best year on tour would end by losing despite serving for the match and later holding 2 MPs in the final set TB. No Shanghai for David now.

I hope Andy pulls out another ugly win vs Ljub and takes the title.

I love it how everyone thinks Andy faked his injury. Its pretty easy to sit here on a messageboard and bash away at people you don't even know, being in situations you can't even comprehend. I'll bet half of you have never even played tennis for more than a year. We should be giving players like him and others the benefit of the doubt in this situation and if they faked it than they shouldn't but there is nothing we should do about and they will just have to live with it.

Well Froggy Ferrer what was he doing approaching on a ball to Roddick's forehand when he has a match point, the sensible and logical approach was down the line to the Roddick backhand, always test the weaker shot in the pressure situation, as it's more likely to break down and if he makes a backhand pass while match point down, then too good.

Ferrer had enough chances to win and wasn't good enough to do so and as for an injury, he might be, he might not be injured, but he will be fine against Ljubo and all credit to Duckboy for pulling this match out and making the most of his chances.

No doubt he needs to be smarter, I was commenting the same mistake since earlier, in the 2nd set. He played well but he got what he deserved, choked at serving the match out at 5-3 and he didn´t punish Roddick´s bh with his heavy forehand as he should have done.

He had enough chances and I mean if Ferrer is going to approach the net to Roddick then aim a low ball at his backhand and if he can a backhand pass on the run in that situation, which is not likely, but pressure does strange things to people and will continue to do so.
