Battle for Shanghai: Ljubicic & Gaudio

1st one to lose is out. If Ivan wins tomorrow and Gaudio loses, Ivan is 8th place and is IN(unless Ferrer wins Paris). If Ivan loses tomorrow, Gaudio would need to win to be 8th. If both lose, Ivan gets 8th place by 1 point.

BUT i think both will be there, someone else will pull out. :)

The place is as good as Ljubo's really. He isn't going to lose before the SF and Gaudio isn't going to the final...

Gaudio needs to make it to final and Ivan lose in SF, for GG to be 8th,

There is 0% chance both make it unless someone withdraws.

Gaudio really deserves to be in Shanghai. He must have set a record for most number of tournaments won without qualifying for the year-end cup.

Im not worried at all. TMC was not expected, winning Davis Cup is more important.

There's always at least one player who plays in both the TMC and DC final at the end of the year. Last year, it was Moya and Roddick. Who would have thought it would be Ivan this year? :worship:

Sjengster
11-03-2005, 09:52 PM
Yes, I was just thinking after the DC semis that that tradition would be broken this year because of the two minnow teams reaching the final for the first time; now Ljubicic will most likely be the man who fulfils the role, and deservedly so as a new entrant to the Top 10. I just hope that his season next year doesn't repeat a rather worrying trend: see Safin's 2003, Ferrero's 2004 and Moya's 2005.

Well, the trend doesn't always hold. Hewitt's 2004? Wasn't so bad. Nor was Roddick's 2005.

It would be a big surprise if Gaudio gets the 8th spot... but, he is playing great :)

go robredo against Ljubo and go Gato against Berdych!!!!!

btw, if Hewitt withdraws, Puerta will probably be the reserve, so there will be 3 argyes in TMC again :)

El Legenda

well Ljubicic can stay in top 10 for 2006. EASY- JUST WIN FEW matchs in GS. simple as that  he will dominated Indoors again. Also 0pts to defend in Canada and Cincy

It is impossible for Gaudio and Puerta to play Shangai. If Gaudio is #8 then Ljubo is alternate and If Ljubo is #8 then its Gaudio, SO Puerta has no chance

Well, the trend doesn't always hold. Hewitt's 2004? Wasn't so bad. Nor was Roddick's 2005.

That's true, but in the case of Hewitt it's not a proper comparison since he played so little tennis in 2003 and achieved so little besides winning the DC that he still had plenty in reserve for the next year. The three I mentioned all played a lot of tennis and won a lot of matches, the same as Ljubicic has done this year. But Roddick did equal Federer for match victories in 2004 and as you say, it hasn't hurt him this year at all.

Ideally, Hewitt or Agassi will withdraw so that both Ljubicic and Gaudio can play. I know it's the Grand Slam results that matter most but, this time, it just seems unfair that one of them shouldn't make it. Hewitt and Agassi have missed most of the year. It's purely their Aus Open and US Open results that have got them into the TMC.

A Gaudio-Ljubicic final would be fun, providing we do not have another MC withdrawal before the end of the week and one more Davydenko win.

I think not, but only if Ljubo and Gato play in the final.
But Davy could win on Friday and avoid being worried about what Ljubo and Gaudio do.

Puerta is the only finalist in the slam this year to not qualify. Its a pity. It would have been nice way to forget the false drug allegation and so on

If Agassi withdraws (to keep energy for Melbourne), then Puerta could get there at least as alternative (=$)

Gaudio will play his role as an alternate, but there is a very simple lesson for Gaudio, having such brain fades like the Ferrer match where he had everything wrong with his head and not focusing on the court, and the Christophe Rochus match in Hamburg, then this wouldn't be an issue of him having to qualify for Shanghai, when it should have been done already.

I don't care either way, Ljubo has a DC to win, and I feel there is a big possibility of him coming into the AO flat.

I prefer players who can do well in real men's best-of-five game, not only in girlie best-of-three..
