Ginepri was totally out of gas..his first long season with many good results was in his legs.
Gaston played solidly and with tons of winners

Well this was a suprise, but Aslong as Ljubo beats Robredo it will be ok, then Gaudio has to beat Berdych and probably Stepanken indoors to overtake Ljubo and this is all if Ljubo loses to Roddick in semis, which he may not.

Ginepri pretty much tanked the second set, he would go for a winner, if Gaudio got it back he wouldn't even bother to run it down. He won one game just to avoid the bagel by the looks of it.

What's so odd about it? do you mean to say Ginepri is a better player than Gaston? Even if Ginepri won their last two meetings, it doesn't mean that it's odd that Gaston would win today. This year alone he reached R16 in miami to lose to Agassi, and qf in montreal before losing again to agassi.

Old Ginepri "bagel&breadstick eater" came back for an hour. After first 3 games of the match I was assclose to switch the channel as it looked like Ginepri would kill him :shrug:

Being such a Ginepri lover as I am, this was strange to say the least. Yes, he still must be ill, though he was able to win his previous match, then again that was a triumph against over such difficult odds.

Seriously, hahahahahaha what a funny match this was and Gaston's reaction at the end he seemed bemused. I was dazed and just caught the start, where Ginepri was leading 3-0 and thought here we go again, here comes thrashing number 3 from Bubba.

Then something came over Ginepri and it was great to see, from a selfish point of view, he was playing like absolute rubbish and was handing out the presents like Santa Claus on LSD and ecstasy combined before the last night of Christmas.

To Gaudio's credit, he was able to concentrate well enough and not make that many errors and came through, when it could have been easy for him to lose his way.

Gaudio is going to have to improve on that performance in a big way, but hey the TMC alternate position, isn't such a bad thing.

It does make you realise, as you said in the other thread, that a couple of better performances against the Frog specifically could have got him into Shanghai by now, and I'm not sure he's going to get a third shot at qualifying for the TMC next year, much less actually making it in. But still, at the end of last year I have to admit I would never have predicted he'd come so close again in 2005. And it's remarkable to think that without a Grand Slam title, he's actually going to finish the year ranked one spot higher than he did last year. Not bad for someone who was supposed to turn back into a pumpkin after RG.

Yes, that's why 2005 has been good and bad for Gaudio. He improved his records in finals and the only one he lost was to Nadal in a very good performance.

Next year is the pumpkin year for him, but that doesn't concern me at all, he needed to do well in the 4 major events that were really open to him, but he has made QFs in Montreal and in Paris, not bad for an absolute gimp with no clue about playing tennis off anything but clay.

It's strange to think that he's made three QFs in the Masters Series this year and only one of them was on clay. But yes, that single QF in Monte Carlo being his best result in the four big clay events is certainly an irritant. It makes people think that he's only ever earnt his points by winning optional clay titles, when a) he was nowhere near this consistent even in the small events before the RG victory, and b) he has actually gone deep in several clay TMSes and blown a couple of good opportunities to reach the final.

Well as I like to say the myth is always better than the reality. Even in the AO and RG, he blew chances for sure to go further though more so with the meltdown with Froggy. Yes, he could be like Kafelnikov as a Slam winner and not win a TMS, that's where and his compatriot differ, one won less titles, but did better in the major events through consistency, hence why he is ranked where is.
