Totally dominating performance by Roddick. Looks like this tournament will come down to a showdown between Ivan and Roddick in the SF's.

Best he's played all year. Absolutely outplayed Hrbaty from first point to last. A few stats I noticed.....

First serve percentage = 85%
Aces = 16, Double Faults = 0
Match time = 50 mins

Amazing match by Andy! It was really great, very impressive.
I'm proud of him :)

Yay Andy!

This one goes up there with his beatdown of Grosjean in Houston. The thing is that he often serves like this or close to this but never returns serve well enough to dominate. In 2003 or even last year, he would at least threaten to break once or twice in a set. It seems that everyone dominates him on their service games.

Ivan and Roddick should be a good one.

sometimes mentioning that haters are going to come/say blah blah blah, just invites more. if you don't want it, don't ask for it. why not just enjoy andy's win and leave everyone else out of it.

Truly a good win for Andy. I really thought Hrbaty would give him more of a difficult time, but with those serve stats, I think anyone would have had a tough day at the office.

i thought andy would definitely win, but i sure didn't think this would be the scoreline. sounds like he played very well and there just wasn't much hrbaty could do.

Exactly...too often he has lost matches this year which had him at a very high servce percentage and easy service games overall but still he lost. It´s really nice to see such a scoreline for a change;)

That was a brilliant performance and it is not often you will hear me say that about the Roddick of late. Not only the serve but some of the angles he created were almost Federer-like.

Truly amazing. Question is will he be able to keep it up for 3 more matches.

NYCtennisfan
11-03-2005, 08:47 PM
Ivan-Roddick will probably have maybe one break in it total. That one should be a war. One really good sign for Roddick is that he was able to break serve so easily on this surface. He has a hard enough time breaking serve on slower surfaces.

I'm still kinda speechless. When was the last time Andy had such a dominating, convincing win like this? It's been forever since I've seen/heard/read about him playing like that. It was wonderful. Too bad it came at Dommy's expense and not Ivan's. ;)

Amazing how he serves when he's in his comfort zone. Prooves how important the mental aspect of the game is. I bet he won't serve like that against Ivan but if he can get just 60-70% in, he'll be in very good shape.

Haven't we heard this scenario one too many times ? Roger showed up at Cincy, out of shape (for his standards), a few extra pounds added on and lacking match play since Wimbledon, while Roddick had plenty of tennis under his belt and arguably was at his peak for the Summer, anticipating the U.S Open and having great optimism. What happened ? Fedex took him out in straight sets. Roddick played one good match, now this comes back, maybe he has a chance this, maybe that. The boy simply is outclassed by Roger. Roger has many different options, if he is not in shape, then thanks to Tony Roche it is now an option for him to come to net. Roddick cannot possibly generate the efficiency nor has the skill to pass Federer & volleying isn't even Roger's trade. It's actually considered a "weak spot", based on Fedex standards.

Enough of the bullshit, too much typing; don't get ahead of yourself. :)

I'm surprised nobody's mentioned how much Andy sliced his backhand today! He hardly came over it at all. I remember a few points that were 20+ strokes, backhand to backhand, and Andy didn't use topspin once!!

And *you* wanted Andy to get rid of the slice. :p ;)Yep he did and it worked there too. When it's a good tactic and it's working in the rallies and he's getting it deep, I don't have a problem with it. But he tends to overuse it and then it's no good and he will lazily slice into the net a lot, which is just a poor unnecessary UE. Also, his slice approach is still petty awful. :p

Sometimes it seems to me that his slice approach tends to be short, giving his opponents more options/angles for the passing shot. This is something they should be working in practice for sure.
