Little bit of my experience:

I met Roger in the airport, but there were too many people there, including media, fans and people picking up others, so didn't have chance to do anything except shouted out loud "welcome to shanghai again Roger". And Roger did remember me and said "How are you" smiling very happily when he was passing by and seeing us (me and Alessia holding a big board with Roger's pic on it)

I had dinner with other Roger fans just opposite Hilton where they all live. After the dinner, I decided to sit for a bit of time in Hilton to see if I had any chance to catch him back. I was kept accompany by other two fans but started waiting for him alone from 10:30. Acutally I didn't want to stay too late coz I have to work today. Thank God, Roger didn't come back too late. At 11:10 he came back in the official Benz which I recognized at the very first sight.

I walked to the gate. He came in and I said to him sth like, so good to have you here again Roger. Then to my surprise, he stretched his hand offering to shake hand with me  My hand was full of mobile phone and camera and my bag...OMG...I didn't prepare at all...then I managed to shake hand with him  Then I asked him to take a photo with me. He seemed willing to do it very much, smiled happily and said, sure sure. Then there came the pic here...
http://www.tennis.com.cn/bbs/uploadFiles/2005-11/7_1849106_2.jpg

Then I asked sth about his feet. He said it's ok, but still not too sure. But from his words and expressions I think he will play. :D

Hope you enjoy it :wavey:

I will open a seperated thread in Roger's site. I think I will have many stories to share with you all :wavey:

I "borrowed" his from the Rafa thread:

Agassi has already arrived in Shanghai around 8.20pm on 7.11.2005.

The Masters Cup’s Participants' Food & Clothing Revealed: Wearing Empirical Robes Eating Meat Potluck Traveling In Mercedes
http://sports.sina.com.cn 7.11.2005

Clothing – Donning “Shanghai Tang” Empeirical Robes

At the opening ceremony of 2002 Masters Cup, the 9 players donned traditional Tang costumes which became the most significant moment back then, this costume which has a strong ‘Chinese flavour’ had the players feeling as if they hit gold as they seldom came into contact with Chinese culture. As the Chinese saying goes: Buddha relys on clothing, Man relys on gold clothing (sorry for the direct translation). 3 years later, the players will return to Shanghai, what costumes will they be donning to face the media?

According to sources, the players will still be clad in strong ethical Chinese costumes [ethnic I think they mean] for the opening ceremony this year, but as in year 2002 the traditional Tang costume was already chosen, the possibility of choosing it again is not very big. This year it will be a revamped version of the Beijing Opera costumes, also considered an empirical robe.

The organizers revealed the clothes will be sponsored by the famous “Shanghai Tang”. This brand is already the world’s most expensive Chinese brand with its modern twist to the Chinese costumes which is its uniqueness. Currently, “Shanghai Tang” has already specially prepared 4 sets of empirical clothing, consist of a classic Chinese-style jacket, 2 pieces of Chinese-style mandarin collar slim-fitting suit and a piece of medium length leather clothing. This few sets of clothing has ‘dragon’ embroidery either on the collar or inner sleeves, thus when one folds up the collar or inner sleeves, the Chinese symbol will be clearly seen.

One set has already been confirmed as what the players will be wearing for the opening ceremony, however in order to surprise the players and also a bigger surprise to the fans world-wide, the answer will only be revealed on the actual opening ceremony. Even the tournament’s staff are kept in the dark.

As the list of players qualified for the Masters Cup are only confirmed recently, it is also impossible to wait for the list of qualifiers to be released in order to make the costumes, furthermore the designers have yet to meet the players in person, the measurements thus became a tricky issue. While ATP provided Euro and US measurements which are inaccurate, so in the end these clothing are tailor-made using the normal adult measurements. When the players arrived, they will try it on and alterations will be made accordingly.

In this year’s China Open, 3 world famous Spaniards players – Moya, Ferrero and Nadal donned on empirical robes in the Forbidden City, however “Shanghai Tang” will revamp the traditional Beijing Opera costumes to let it to have a ‘East Meets West’ effect. During the China Open, the 3 Spaniards revealed their sports attire underneath the empirical robes by a gust of strong wind. This scenario will not repeat on the Masters Cup’s opening ceremony.
Food – Meat Potluck As The Only Chinese Dish

The Masters Cup’s food at the stadium will be prepared by Hilton Hotel. Glancing through the menu list given to us by Hilton Hotel, one would feel that the players did not actually go on a food odyssey, one of the hotel’s staff said, “Because in order to adjust to the tournament’s requirements due to high burning activities, the players’ diet have to be high in protein and low in fat, thus the combination of nutritional values is much stronger than the taste.”

A few months earlier, Hilton Hotel has already begun to contact the players whom are highly possible to qualify for the Masters Cup, after gathering all the players’ preferences, and considering the needs of replenishing the nutritional values, this nutritional and delicious menu list is created.

Among them, “Italy Spaghetti category” consist of Italy spaghetti with Italian style wonton and tomato sauce, mushroom sauce or Portuguese sauce, dry Italian spaghetti and garlic bread, “Roast category” consist of roasted salmon tinged with vanilla and lemon, tandoori chicken (Indian style) with cucumber, jasmine and peppermint steamed rice [didn't MIRKA say they like Indian food?]. Among this, there’s also the famous Szechuan dish of meat potluck and this is also the only Chinese dish provided in the buffet. What’s surprising is that there’s only 1 choice for desserts, and that is butter cake, thus it is visible that food high in sugar and fats are not popular among the players. However, this is the basic menu list for the players’ consumption during the matches in the tournament. According to the current match schedule, the singles matches starts from 7pm; most of the players would have reached the stadium by early evening for preparations, the chances of them having their dinner at the stadium is a high possibility. If they had their lunches at the hotel or require supper after returning to the hotel, Hilton Hotel will provide more food varieties.

Lodging – Fair Treatment

Similar to year 2002, the 5-star Hilton Hotel is again the official hotel accommodation for all the players, including the 9 singles players and 9 doubles players, their families, coaches and friends will stay in “Players’ Home” specially arranged by Hilton Hotel. Maybe the players have enjoyed different accommodation privileges in the Masters Cup held in the rest of the world, however in the Shanghai Masters Cup, everyone will receive the same treatment.

A hotel staff said, “Because the hotel is unable to have similar suites, theoretically, the suites we prepared for the players are not the same, but the standard is basically the same.” From a photo of “what’s possibly could be the players’ room” provided by the hotel, overall the atmosphere is heart-warming. Especially with the huge full-height windows, the players are able to enjoy the spectacular Shanghai night scenery. In every players’ room, the hotel has also prepared towels with their names imprinted on it, this is continuing the tradition from year 2002; to let the players immediately have a feeling of “coming home”.

The players come to participate in the final Masters Cup tournament, of course they wouldn’t be traveling alone, each has their own entourage. Nadal, this big kid whom just turned 19, will be bringing along 11 relatives and friends and coach, while Davydenko will be bringing the smallest entourage which consist of 2 coaches, so the hotel also needs to provide lodging for the entourage. Accordingly, no matter how many people the players bring along, the hotel’s expenses will be fully paid by the Masters Cup committee.

Getting Around – Mercedes Benz & “Bodyguards”

The 9 singles players will each be assigned a designated Mercedes Benz at their beck and call, the drivers are responsible for transporting the players from the airport to the hotel, from the hotel to the stadium or to any destinations which the players desire to go. With regard to the doubles players, both will be assigned a designated Mercedes Benz, but this does not mean that the doubles players will be “tied up together” for traveling. A committee member said, “In principle they will travel to the stadium together, however if their destinations are different during the tournament, we will improvise by increasing the number of vehicles to satisfy their traveling needs.”

Wherever the players go, there will be burly bodyguards accompanying them, in the previous tennis tournaments held in Shanghai eg. Polo Open, the committee at many times engaged the services of “famous bodyguards” from Hong Kong and overseas to escort the star players, some star players even brought along their own “bodyguards”. However locals will be engaged for this year’s Masters Cup. It is confirmed that the Shanghai Masters Cup’s committee will not be engaging the services of foreign bodyguards, instead the services of Shanghai security company’s staff will be rendered, communication with the players will not be a problem as most them can converse in fluent English.

In reality, not every player will have bodyguards. The security’s main focus will be on the “star players” eg. Federer, Nadal, Hewitt, Roddick, Agassi, Safin etc. The doubles players will not even have bodyguards. This is good news for the fans whom wish to obtain their autographs. LOL!

Beside security personnel, this year’s Masters Cup have also specially created “Players’ Service” category for the players and their entourage. The personnel participating in this category will be spilt into 2 small groups, 1 group will be stationed at the hotel, the other at the stadium responsible for their welfare and tournament updates. Some personnel will have a designated location, eg along corridor of the players’ lounge to provide the players with tournament updates and to attend to their requests at the stadium, while some personnel will be moving around according to the players’ traveling plans. For example, the players or their girlfriends, parents and friends want to shop, visit Shanghai’s places of interest; the personnel will accompany them to shop or as a tour guide. Accordingly, these personnel will comprise of foreigners or locals with a strong grasp in English whom be temporarily employed for the tournament. [hey, I should have applied for this job!]

Masters Cup’s Entourage: Nadal’s The Biggest Group
Agassi Without His Beloved Wife Graf

It is also interesting to take a look at the players’ entourage. Among the 8 confirmed singles players, Nadal whom will be arriving today in Shanghai has the biggest entourage. This 19 year big kid can’t wait to “move” all his relatives and friends to Shanghai to cheer him on, this trip also provides a rare opportunity for them to travel together, to soak in this cosmopolitan city, Shanghai.

This May, Nadal’s parents were touring Shanghai when he participated in the French Open. It may be due to their good impression from Shanghai that infected Nadal to bring a big entourage of 12 including himself. Beside his parents whom are among the entourage, there’s also Uncle Toni (whom recently criticized the surface which is not suitable to Nadal’s playing style), agent, and a group of his friends.

Second on the entourage list is Federer, including himself, his girlfriend, mother, sister, coach, trainer, physiotherapist, agent and 2 friends, all should fill up a car nicely. They have different arrivals though, yesterday Federer was accompanied by his girlfriend only.

Among the players, the “loneliest” would be first-time Masters Cup qualifier, Russia’s Davydenko, according to the current committee’s news, 2 coaches will be accompanying him. While Roddick, Hewitt and Agassi’s entourage are much more "compact", inclusive of the players themselves, Roddick’s 4 person, Hewitt’s 5 person, the Australian wild rabbit kept his tradition in big tournaments by bringing his parents along. Agassi will be accompanied by only 3, his wife, Steffi Graf’s not one of them.

Nadal Played At Least 119 Matches Tough To Defeat World No. 1 On Hard Court

Nadal’s the only Masters Cup player whom defeated Federer this season, and is leading their face-offs by 2 matches to 1, his 79 matches’ victory also surpassed Federer whom’s at the top of ATP ranking. However, Nadal’s uncle and coach, Toni, recently criticized the court surface of Shanghai Masters Cup, from another point of view, it shows that Nadal’s not confident of defeating Federer on hard court.

With his strong physique, 19 year old Nadal has participated in 23 tournaments this season, his tournaments’ participation is second to Russian’s Davydenko. If inclusive his 27 doubles matches and a conservative estimate of Nadal playing in 3 matches in Shanghai, then this year he would have at least played 119 matches.

This season, Nadal and Federer have each won 8 Masters Series tournaments, both withdrew from the last Masters Series tournament in Paris, but both have practically won all this season’s Master Series, a record that is hard to break.

“ATP should take some measures, after a month of indoor tournaments in Europe, the Masters Cup finals should be held on a outdoor court with medium speed, the players will not be able to adjust to this type of fast court in Shanghai within a short time.” Toni’s speech seems to have the underlying meaning that he has no confidence in his nephew’s performance.

Actually Nadal prefers clay courts, among the 11 titles he won this year, he only has 3 hard court titles: Montreal Masters, China Open and Madrid Masters, “I think I have a lot more techniques to perfect, I need a playing style which will be suitable for all types of court surfaces.” To Nadal, there’s nothing meaningful to win the year end Masters Cup, he needs time to hone up his skills. Now, everybody’s concerned whether Nadal will defeat Federer in Shanghai: in Miami’s Nadsaq final, he was leading by 2 sets but failed to capitalize on match point and in the end Federer fought back and won; while in Roland Garros, the unstoppable Nadal defeated Federer by 3 sets to 1 before evening time in Paris. This was also the last match Federer lost in this season.

Things are heating up as the highlight of the year steadily approaches. Roger became the first player to arrive in Shanghai yesterday in advance of the season-ending Masters Cup.

The trip to Shanghai is the second in just one month for Roger, who had made a whirlwind stop here early last month to unveil the Qizhong Tennis Center in the city's Minhang District, where the tournament will be played to November 20.

Roger has arrived early in order to prepare thoroughly. He feels his shape is improving constantly but is still not certain whether he will be able to play. We'll most certainly keep you updated!

How can Rogi on the one hand say he's looking forward to defending his title and now say he's not certain whether he will play? Last week he said "I go to Shanghai with a fresh mind and really look forward to defending the title." The draw is announced on Wednesday so he doesn't have much time to bow out...

A Sneak Peek At The Masters Cup’s Suite: Nadal Reserved 10 Rooms No Special Privileges For Federer
Journalist: Pan Lijuan

Players’ Names Imprinted On Towels & Pillowcases

During Shanghai Masters Cup 2002, Agassi was the only player staying in a Presidential suite in Hilton Hotel; a month ago, Federer came to Shanghai for the Masters Cup promotional events, he too stayed in Hilton Hotel’s Presidential suite. However during the tournament, the 8 singles players will all receive the same treatment, they will all be staying in the VIP suites ie. the Executive Panorama.

The 5-star Shanghai Hilton Hotel’s room rates per day are RMB$2,000 for the normal rooms up to nearly RMB$20,000 for the Presidential suites. According to ATP’s arrangements, the 8 singles players will be staying in the VIP suites, costing RMB$6,440 per night.

I got a sneak peek at Agassi’s room before his arrival yesterday afternoon.

The suite’s area’s more than 70 square metres, the single room’s about 40 square metres, as it is a panorama room, it looks bright and bigger when the afternoon’s sunrays shone in. According to the staff’s introduction, the VIP’s suite room’s biggest distinctiveness is the trendy factor, “This is the trendiest room type in the hotel. The interior decoration’s much more modern compared to the other suites, it also comes with the latest technology, eg. there will be a remote control system at every bed’s headrest, you can control the all suite’s facilities just by lying on the bed.”

Inside the suite, the hotel’s unique touch can be seen everywhere; from the players’ names embroidery on their bathrobes, pillowcases and towels to the exquisite chocolate desserts delivered everyday. However, the hotel spokesperson also expressed that they did not made any special efforts this time because "the players are very easy-going, unlike the movie stars or singers they hosted before, they did not have any special or stringent reception requests,” the hotel’s operations manager said.

10 Rooms Await Nadal’s Entourage

The 8 singles players, a last minute qualifier and Safin, whom won’t be participating in the tournament, will be staying in the 10 VIP suites. With regard to the less-known doubles players, they will be staying in the Panorama suites.

The Panorama suites’ rates are about RMB$5,930 per night, the room’s facilities are similar to the ones in the VIP suites. Everyone will have their own personalised towels and pillowcases. Safin whom has to withdraw due to his injury has already made his room reservation for a week, the hotel not only let him stay in the VIP suite but also provided him with the same necessities as the singles players ie. personalized pillowcases and towels etc. Safin will only be participating in the promotional events.

Each player will be bringing along his own entourage; accordingly the coaches will be staying in rooms nearby to the players’ VIP suites, with regard to the other staff and players’ entourage, the hotel will try their best to arrange for them to stay on the same floor. However the arrangement for Nadal’s huge entourage will be a tricky issue. “Nadal will be confirmed staying in a single room because he’s unattached.” The hotel’s operations manager added, “However, his entourage which has been confirmed to be a group of 15 will be coming down; including his parents, relatives and friends, we will need to provide them with at least 10 rooms.”

In comparison, Federer whom has arrived earlier has been pretty low-key. His mother, sister, coach and trainer etc up to about a group of 10 will be arriving separately over the next few days. Now, he only has his girlfriend/manager by his side, so he’s not easily spotted when going in and out of the hotel. “Mr Federer’s been feeling pretty relaxed staying here, he and his girlfriend went shopping at Prada last night,” the hotel operations manager smiled.

Players’ Favourites: Bananas and Dim Sum

Beside all the players, ATP officials, “Players & Home Of Tennis” staff and the sponsors will be staying at Hilton Hotel. The hotel will also be responsible for the food and beverages for all the players and VIPs at the Qi Zhong Tennis Stadium during the tournament. The hotel operations manager said, “This require us to provide high quality food and beverages for about 2,000 people everyday.” So the hotel arranged a group of 500 chefs, among them, 200 chefs are specially recruited for this tournament which includes the chefs from other Hilton branches, eg. Beijing, Chongqing etc, there’s also trainee chefs from other hotel schools in Shanghai.

The first meal Federer had upon his arrival was to have lunch with his girlfriend in the suite. Spring rolls, Italian spaghetti, and the hotel’s specialty: yoghurt cake, a very simple combination of the East and West.

Compared to exquisite food provided for the VIPs, the players’ food and beverages are very simple. Even though the hotel’s chefs comprises of chefs from 6 different countries etc, the chefs need not prepare French or Japanese food, the only dietary requirements are high in protein and nutrition. “If they have any special requests, the only special request would be after every meal, there must be a supply of bananas; a big basket of bananas,” the hotel operations manager revealed. “As at todate, 200 chefs have already set up a temporary kitchen at the tennis centre, 300 chefs will remain at Hilton Hotel. The workload will be massive too. We have estimated the required ingredients during the tournament to be between 25,000kg to 30,000kg.”

The first 3 days’ menu for the players have been released, beside breakfast, every meal will consist of 10 appetizers, 3 to 4 types of spaghetti, 3 types of roasted meat, grilled fish, 3 Chinese dishes, 3 Western dishes, 8 choices of desserts and a large quantity of salad and fresh fruits.

“Professional players’ food and beverages are very healthy, heavy sauces are normally not required for roasted meat. In consideration of their bland taste, we will provide a blander version of the Cantonese-style and Shanghai dim sum.”

Glutinous rice cakes, prawn dumplings, fresh pork wontons, Xiao-long baos and dumplings, these common dim-sum to us are all popular Chinese food with the players, thus they are a must-have on the buffet table.

It is a challenge to ensure food hygiene due to the enormous ingredients required. There has been a recent outspread of bird flu in Asia and China, will the players refrain from eating poultry?

“Not to worry.” The hotel operations manager expressed that the hotel will ensure fresh ingredients to be delivered everyday, and it’s from the suppliers approved by the authorities, plus the hotel have specially engaged a health doctor; 3 forms of guarantees, the players can set their minds at ease and enjoy their meals.

Border: 24 hours Inspection Gantry

From Sunday onwards, there will be an extra inspection gantry in front of Hilton hotel’s main entrance, this means that everyone coming in and out of the hotel – the players are already staying in the hotel, stringent safety measures will be taken.

“From the moment the players checked in, we will assign at least 1 security guard to be on duty around the clock on every floor they are staying.” In addition, the players’ private restroom inside the stadium will also have security guards on duty all day. The players’ dining area in the hotel will not be opened to the public, this stringent security measures are taken to ensure that the players’ private time will be uninterrupted, “so if the fans are thinking of trying their luck outside the stadium, sorry, they too will not have any chances.”

During the tournament, the hotel will be in full co-operation with the police, there will be a number of plainclothes policemen stationed nearby. “If the players encountered zealous fans while returning or leaving the hotel, the plainclothes policemen will help out to escort the players away, especially when they are going to the stadium, so that there will not be any delays for their matches and training.”

Sitting Next To Safin In The Bar

The tournament’s about to start, the hotel’s atmosphere is relaxed on the outside but uptight inside. There will definitely be a big group of journalists and fans, the hotel has a strategy – rather than being stiff, why not smile and welcome them.

Since year 2001, Shanghai’s Hilton hotel has always been the selected hotel accommodation for all ATP and WTA tournaments in Shanghai, including the year 2002 Masters Cup, Heineken Open and Polo Open, the hotel operations manager jokingly said, “We are already prepared for the large number of media and fans.”

When you stepped into the basement lobby, what welcomes you is a “Heineken Bar” with a bright blue and green theme. The striking colors signify the close link between here and tennis. The place is not big, a round-shaped bar counter, 4 to 5 tables, what grabs your attention instead is the big sign behind the bar counter, which list out the mug shots of the players and database, maybe even the players will drop by for a drink.

“Heineken Bar” was set up as a “resting place” for the media and tennis fans, so grab a seat and have a drink, maybe you might be sitting next to beer-lover Safin.

HI Seb! I think Rogi will play; it's just that he won't know how his foot feels until he actually plays a real match. We have to hope and pray he's 100% so he can try to win the TMC for a third time.

What a weird TMC... :p

I see some people in GM still think Roger won't play - that he just showed up to collect his #1 trophy and make his sponsors happy. Honestly though if he wasn't going to play I think he would've announced it by now. The draw comes out tomorrow (Wednesday). I can't imagine he would withdraw after the draw has already been announced with him in it. I mean would that even be possible? Plus there aren't any rumors (that I've seen) out there saying he may yet withdraw. I think he'll play, but most likely wear those ankle braces (hopefully not black ones).

Ivan won't be easy to beat unless he's absolutely shattered fr his last few weeks of winning titles and just missing titles. As for Nalby, he HAS won on this surface before and can be extremely tough for Rogi -- it all depends on how Nalby is feeling that day.

At least AA is in the other group cos you never know w him -- he could have been running up and down those Vegas hills without anyone knowing and if anyone can show up in great form, it's AA. After all, he DID show up so he means to win.

Rafa keeps talking about his knees not being 100%... we'll see. He is THE toast of Shanghai, btw. He says he has no pressure and all players are going to be tough.

Between the complaints about the surface, his alleged knee problems, the reports coming out of shanghai about how horribly his practice sessions are going.....they're laying it on pretty thick, making it sound as if he shouldn't even have bothered to show up because he's so much at a disadvantage. All of this leading to lowered expectations again. Both the surface and his knee were supposed to be issues in madrid, and we all know what happened there. In any case, we'll know how fit all the players actually are soon enough

It seems Nadal and his uncle/coach love the attention, mind games and big $$ that come with his annoying heroic "prince" image. :rolleyes:I'm really starting to get annoyed with all this lowering of expectations that comes from Rafa's team. It's one thing for him to be cautious and say he's not sure about his knee, ect. But they're laying it on soo thick, basically giving him no shot at all. And he's the #2 player in the world. If his injury really is that bad then he shouldn't be playing. IMO once you commit to play there should be no excuses if you lose.

Agree with you there Mirkaland ... I too get a bit sick of Nadal + his entourage talking down his chances at this + that tourny - only for him to then go on and win it! IIt does nothing for his image or the fact that "gamesmanship" used to be "on court", now it seems as if "off court" as well. I don't like it.

yup, i was thinking the exact same thing when i read earlier about him having these really awful practice session, especially after all the complaints about the surface. it seems to me that normally athletes don't try and ham up (wow what an old lady expression:lol: )their injuries to the media like this. if anything don't they generally try to appear cautiously optimistic  i personally don't buy it but that's just me, his knee was supposedly bad enough to put him in doubt for madrid and we saw how much that hampered him on his way to the title:rolleyes: i guess we'll see how it holds up this time.

Federer Plays Down Shanghai Hopes

World number one Roger Federer has played down his chances of defending the Masters Cup in Shanghai.
The Swiss star sustained an ankle injury in practice four weeks ago and missed the Madrid and Paris Masters as well as the Swiss Indoors in Basel.

"To be honest, I don't know my chances of winning here because of my foot," he told the Shanghai Daily.

"I'm here to defend my title but health comes before success. I just hope I can play the first game without any pain."

The event, which starts on Sunday, has already seen the withdrawal of Andy Roddick, Marat Safin and Lleyton Hewitt.

Guillermo Coria, who replaced Safin, Ivan Ljubicic and David Nalbandian are all in Federer's group.

Gaston Gaudio, Rafael Nadal, Andre Agassi and Russian Nikolai Davydenko are in the Gold group.

Really? Where did you get that impression from? Coz from the articles/news I read, didn't seem like it. Rogi is the biggest name for the organiser/promoter/medias, naturally I think, he's the no.1 and "The Man" in tennis world, not to mention he was recently voted the most popular player by the Chinese fans.

I have to say though I really don't get why I kept reading articles/news portraying Mirka being "cold" (as opposed to Rogi being warm and friendly) and "jealous"...maybe just to create gossip out of it, esp looking at the
"over friendly" pretty shanghai mei mei ...*cough* Laura *cough* or perharps they kept capturing the very "bored" or "upset" looking Mirka on camera :o ;)

Anyway, all I care now is to see the healthy Rogi playing again on Sunday, so long already it seems...really can't wait! I miss him on court so much! Apparently he will be playing Nalby first match? Will be tough with him out of action so long. Hope he gets a good start.

This doesn't make very pleasant reading - and it made me feel very nervous about him playing even one game ... though its reassuring to read he puts health before success!

The top two players in each group go forward to the semi-finals."

A funny tournament which nobody seems wanting to win and the top players are competing in downplaying their chances ;) . If Roger comes out on Sunday, then we'll have certainty, because I remember him saying once, whatever tourney he plays, he plays it to win it. Good luck.

Yeah exactly. If he plays, he will be there to win for sure, not to mention he does take this tournament very seriously. He had been training hard everyday it seems. But at this moment, he probably really have no idea where he stands, being out of action for rather long and as he said before practice can never be the same with real matches.

Hopefully he does have a good start vs Nalby Sunday.

I've been reading a lot of Spanish and other articles that seem to emphasize Rafa.

Yes, all I care about is a healthy Rogi also -- that's THE priority. I won't be able to sleep on Sun. night while we get the match [after midnight] worrying about whether or not Rogi has won the match. Rogi will focus on winning his matches quickly so as not to put unnecessary pressure on his foot. So straight-sets wins are crucial for him.

I'll let others post articles that mention Rafa from now on [but it's hard to find them without mention of the "ogre"]. :p ;)

I've never gotten the impression from photos/videos/fan stories that Mirka is bothered by Roger being too friendly or taking time out to meet fans. I still think she was probably just bored....she has nothing really to do at these events so I'm sure after a while they're all the same and it can get boring. Of course Roger has to be friendly, polite, ect. even when sometimes he'd probably rather be doing something else. In the video I posted here he said it's very important when he's not on the tennis court that he spends "quality" time with Mirka because she does a lot of waiting around for him and makes him feel good off court which helps him do well on court. So I think it's all much ado about nothing.

Anyone really want to see Roger w/out his movement on a surface he said doesn't take his spins well?? Yippeee... :( :( :(No of course I'd love to see him at 100% fit. But not everyone else there is totally fit either. And they're not crazy about the surface either. I don't think that's an excuse for not playing....especially when you have all those points to defend. I can understnad skipping Madrid, Basel and Paris because he had nothing to gain there. But TMC is a different story. As long as his people tell him he can play and he feels like he can play then he should.

What? The same precious points that could help him to keep his No1 position.
There are no lucky losers, qualifiers, low ranked players in Shanghai. He'll be tested right away by Nalbandian. It's an illusion that someone not fully fit can compete with top players. I hope he's not going to make a fool of himself in the process of pleasing the organizers and/or ATP executives.

Of course had he been fit he could've gained points in Madrid/Basel/Paris that would help if he doesn't do well at TMC and early next year. But as long as his doctor/trainer/physio says he's OK to play TMC then he should play because he does have a lot of points to defend. I didn't enjoy watching him play in Cincy - he was out-of-form, not playing well at all and probably should've lost to Robby Ginepri. But he still needed to compete. And it's a good thing he did because he made up for not defending his points in Canada. I know this is a different story because he's coming off an injury, but I don't think he should back out because he's rusty and might lose early. Plus he's not the only one there who's not fully fit or lacks match practice.

The fact of the matter is that if Roger did not play in the TMC this year, there would be a very good chance that he would lose his #1 ranking early next year. Without Fed at the TMC, only Ivan and maybe Agassi could beat him on the surface. Andre hasn't played since the USO and his motivation is iffy so I could easily see Nadal winning the whole thing and only losing 1 match. That would net him 125 race points and that would put him 835 points behind Fed.

Say fed doesn't defend Doha, he only gets to the final then he loses another 75 points and is only 760 points up going into the AO. Let's say Fed makes it to the SF of the AO and Nadal wins it. Fed gains no points and Nadal gains 925 points which makes him the #1 player in the world.

IT seems to me that Fed very badly wants to hold on to the #1 ranking for at least another 100 weeks and wanst to do everything to keep it. After tha, he will let it go and concentrate on slams alone and go for Pete's record. Thsi tournament is very important for Federer if he wants to stay #1 consecutively for a long time to come

I think it's to make himself happy more than anyone else. And he wants to keep the #1 ranking. You have to defend points to do that. Of course you have to be healthy too. But I think he's a smart guy and has smart people around him and he wouldn't be on the court if he didn't think he could play. So when anyone suggests TMC doesn't mean anything, it sure does for Roger. He's got more points to defend there than he does at AO.

I have a hard time believing that someone just off crutches can compete on this level, I really do. Nalbandian, Ljubicic play RF tight even if he's fully fit. It'll be very different from practices. We have no idea what his doctors advise him, they are no gods anyway. So many athletes reinjury themselves coming back early. Do you think all of them and their doctors are idiots? There's always a lot of external and internal pressure to compete. But you can't put price on your health. The No1 position is a big deal, but his long term career is more important.

All very ture but I think Roger feels healthy and his docotrs believe that he can have a go at it so that's good. If something doesn't feel right, I'm sure he withdraws like mirkaland said.

Nalbandian, Nadal, and Ivan will be really difficult to defeat coming out cold like this, especially Ivan I think because when Fed came back after his long layoff after Wimby, the hardest thing for him to do was return serve and you will have to do that well against Ivan.

It should be interesting. :)

Of course the foot is a whole different story and no one wants him to re-injure his foot or make things worse. But as long as the foot is OK, he needs to play. I had to make sure I was very careful with my ankle. But now I see no risk whatsoever, added the world number one at Saturday's opening ceremony for this year's Masters Cup.

It's not like one week ago when the ligament was totally out of position. It's holding up to professional tennis so I'm not really concerned, said Swiss Federer, who begins his campaign against eighth-seeded Argentine David Nalbandian on Sunday.

Even though he was confident enough about his fitness, Federer was less assured about his title chances.

My expectations are quite low, he said. I just hope I can play a good match (on Sunday).

I've been working on my match fitness and I gave everything I could to be ready for this tournament in terms of preparation.

I've never lost a round-robin match so it's important to me. I've qualified for the Masters Cup four years in a row, it's always been a great experience and it definitely helped me make a move in the rankings.

Just read some of Rogi's interview today, translated some of those question from Chinese articles :

Also when asked why go through so much harships to come participate here?

He said of course he hopes that everything go according to plans. YE Masters has a special meaning to him, he had been in it for 4 years in a row and won it twice so of course he will want to maintain that. Furthermore YE Cup can bring him lots of points, and let him maintain his No.1, and that's why he tries so hard to overcome his injuries to be here.

When asked about his expectation here and is winning it his biggest goal?

He said actually he's not putting in too much expectation here coz after all he's still not fully fit yet, and haven't competed for a long time. But he had put in a lot of effort and hardwork for this tournament, trying very hard to bring his body to the fittest and be at the best form to participate here. That's why he had been here very early. Also his indoor results are quite good. But this time round, he just hope that he can play better. For him, of course it will be fantastic to win it coz he had done it twice.

================================================== ===

I think it is very obvious that he's playing most importantly to get the points and be more secure with his no.1. We all know how determined he is to make sure he stays no.1.

Isy, what was that?

This that she overheard him saying during his practice :

"4 weeks ago I was very worried, 3 weeks ago I was very worried, 2 weeks ago I was very worried..."

she mentioned that in one of her report. Also when she met Rogi first day he reached Shanghai, he told her he's fine but still not sure if he's ok to play sth like that.

I can't help worrying he's also having doubts/reservation but he's just very determined to play the tournament coz he knows it can be crucial for his no.1 position.

Anyway as I said, we'll know tomorrow and I still trust if he does play, he and his team are sure there won't be any risk.

Then again, it's hard to believe that he, and the people in his inner circle would risk his long term health just to hang on to #1 for a while longer  i don't know, we'll just have to wait and see how things unfold. That's why I thought all along he would play because it's very important to him. But I don't think anyone needs to worry. If he gets into his match against Nalby and his foot/ankle starts bothering him he'll pull out. He said this week that health comes before success. But I think he's going to try and compete because he feels this event is very important, and he's got lots of points to defend.

Isy, thanks for the translation. Much Appreciated!!

I just dropped by to say that, contrary to the confusing reports yesterday, there are 2 Alternates in China so he's not under undue pressure to play if his foot doesn't feel right. (Ferrer & Puerta) wonder if those guys have monogrammed sheet & towels, or if the poor dears have to suffer through mere generic linens :)

I wonder if JMac's record is in the back of his head :)

It seems the surface best suits Ljub's game, and AA is the freshest - if he did another cycle of Juice in preparation.

Whatever happens I truly look forward to seeing him, even if he just steps on the court & smiles and says it's best he not play.

And I do hope that Luna checks in to say Hi :)

For those in the USA Roger's match will be live on ESPN2 at 12AM EST. Patrick McEnroe and Brad Gilbert are doing the play by play. Which is good. They both like Roger and he's not playing any Americans so they should be rooting for him. I remember during Cincy after each match Gilbert would interview Roger and at the end of the interview he would always say "good luck buddy".

To be more concise RN is more of a macho brute. (In case this is news to some, BG is Very Much Disliked by those who remember him in tennis circles where he grew up, so from that viewpoint it is no suprise.) Too bad Cliffie's in LA finishing women's Year Ends. Maybe they'll fly him back to rejoin PMac next week. Perhaps if we all emailed/called espn, we could help push them in that direction.

He also said that Roddick was the favorite in the summer hard court series, even though Roger's had a much better HC record over the past two years. I've watched them cover enough of Roger's matches and I don't think they dislike him at all. But that's just me. And often times it depends on who he's playing. JMac has called him the greatest natural talent ever, Mary Carillo has gushed about what a bright gracious kid he is. They're obviously huge fans of his, yet during the US Open finals I had to turn the sound off the commentary was so bad and biased in favor of Agassi.

Yes, but what did you expect them to say at that point? that match spoke for itself, for them to do anything but compliment him would've looked foolish. I believe they respect him and his game. Of course they don't hate him, but as far as personalities go both have a bias towards nadal, agassi and roddick(well, Pmac does with roddick. i'm not sure if brad still has hard feelings from the breakup :p ) So no, they won't be biased in favor of Nalby, and for some reason i get the impression too that neither of them have much love for the south americans.

But some of these other guys look like they'd rather be somewhere else. It's got to be hard for players like Gaudio and Nalbandian who are only there because others are injured.

Federer to the rescue at Masters
By Gavin Versi
(Filed: 13/11/2005)

The traditional Chinese robes, resembling dressing gowns, that the players wore to yesterday's welcome ceremony said it all. The octet about to contest the Masters Cup, which begins in Shanghai today, are sleepwalking their way through.

Three of the eight players who qualified for this competition are at home nursing injuries, and those who are here are walking wounded. Judging by their morose expressions, two of the replacements - Gaston Gaudio and David Nalbandian of Argentina - are hardly pleased to be here either.

But rest assured, World No 1 Roger Federer, who less than three weeks ago was on crutches, is in town to save the season finale from becoming a snooze fest. "This means a lot to me," said Federer, the two times defending champion.

Not only does Federer put his contemporaries to shame with his racket, he could teach them a thing of two about PR. With all the talk leading into this competition about the decimation of the field, caused by the withdrawals of Andy Roddick, Lleyton Hewitt

and Marat Safin, the rest of the competitors have done nothing to alleviate the gloom by complaining of tiredness. Typically, the Swiss was eager to focus on the positives. "I don't think so," he said when asked if the trio's absence has damaged the tournament.

"What can you do? I think the tournament is bigger than the [players]. The event is so big and there are still top players here. I think we'll see some good tennis and forget who's not here.

"Tennis is an individual sport and it's cruel. If you're injured you don't have a substitute, which is why it looks worse than say with Real Madrid in football. If Zidane is injured they can bring in another player."

As much as the event will miss the triumvirate, none of them looked remotely capable of challenging Federer. Since winning the Australian Open 10 months ago Safin has reached just two quarter-finals while Federer has not lost to Roddick or Hewitt since 2003 - a winning steak of some 15 matches.

He is pleased with his current level of fitness. Only a week ago the ligaments in his right ankle, which he turned over during practice five weeks ago, were "totally out of position." He has, however, been able to train at maximum intensity for the past five days.

Andre Agassi will play despite suffering a similar injury. The 35-year-old twisted his ankle while playing racket ball to alleviate his boredom while wife Steffi Graf visited Germany with their children last month.

"I needed to be here to keep tennis in the forefront of my mind," said Agassi, who traditionally uses this event to prepare himself for an assault on the following January's Australian Open.

The American is in the same group as Rafael Nadal, the 19-year-old who, like Federer, has won four Masters Series shields this year. The Spaniard is the only player in the field to have beaten the Swiss in 2005, but the low-bouncing surface at the Qizhong Stadium is likely to give Federer the upper hand should they meet for a fourth time.

"I think I'm the favourite [against Nadal] indoors," said Federer, who is accompanied by occasional coach Tony Roche, a sign of the seriousness with which he is taking this tournament - unlike some of his peers, who would probably rather be in bed.

This is from an article in the Guardian. I'm assuming Roger gave these comments on Saturday. I swear the guy never complains about anything. The ATP/ITF have got to love him. And I'm sure they're happy he's in Shanghai and sort of the outward face of this event. Otherwise it would really be a snoze fest.

http://observer.guardian.co.uk/sport/story/0,6903,1641680,00.html

There is much debate about what to do with the injury epidemic. Federer, who thinks that his injury was bad luck, rejects the notion that there are too many tournaments. 'It is about choosing where you play carefully,' said the Swiss. 'We are lucky to have so many tournaments.'

Agassi, however, pinpointed the dramatic change that has come over the game in recent years - a change he has witnessed first hand.

'Obviously the calendar is a factor,' the American said. 'But we have to realise how violent the athleticism of the game has become. Today's players hit the ball so hard, you have turn and move so much quicker.'

Federer feeling fine

Roger Federer, who has won the last two Masters Cups, is confident he has recovered fully from the ankle injury he sustained mid-October. "I am a very positive person and I knew that if something went wrong (in the recovery process) I would miss Shanghai," said Federer on the eve of the Masters Cup.

Roger Federer (Switzerland)
Federer draws Nalbandian

"I had to make sure I was very careful with my ankle. But now I see no risk whatsoever," added the world number one at Saturday's opening ceremony for this year's Masters Cup.

"It's not like one week ago when the ligament was totally out of position. It's holding up to professional tennis so I'm not really concerned," said Swiss Federer, who begins his campaign against eighth-seeded Argentine David Nalbandian on Sunday.

Even though he was confident enough about his fitness, Federer was less assured about his title chances.

"My expectations are quite low," he said. "I just hope I can play a good match (on Sunday).

"I've been working on my match fitness and I gave everything I could to be ready for this tournament in terms of preparation.

"I've never lost a round-robin match so it's important to me. I've qualified for the Masters Cup four years in a row, it's always been a great experience and it definitely helped me make a move in the rankings."

Federer has lost only once in 14 Masters Cup matches.

He has won 11 titles in 2005 including the U.S. Open and Wimbledon crowns.

The Swiss has already clinched the year-end world number one ranking after a 77-3 match record in 2005.

In the second encounter on the opening day of the tournament on Sunday, Croatia's Davis Cup hero Ivan Ljubicic takes on fourth seed Guillermo Coria of Argentina.

He played very well in patches (esp in the second set) and Roger played well in spots too. Roger won it fair and square. That's why he's #1 and has the record he does. I am not sure since I watched it off the live stream and they didn't show the shot spot. But if that was the case, it just proves how Roger certainly didn't win this match cause of luck. I don't know what people are complaining about, I actually find it quite amusing.

yes it was. they showed it on espn.

side note: so are brad and pmac officially the worst commentating pair ever. :tape:

it's actually the first time i heard brad commentating, and yeah, he's pretty annoying

the two of them together seemed to have the unique ability to repeat each other and themselves 2, 3 times

hey, i think i saw yanchr on tv upper level, in between 2 friends, with a swiss flag hanging?
reconized her/you from the picture posted with roger
i don't know, it just made me smile, me saturday night seeing you sunday afternoon
