First set was a class act by PHM. He played awesome tennis.
Second set he choked just as he´s used to . Nothing new .
Third set , very closed, PHM holding serves easier than Gonzo .
Final set tb. KEY POINT was the first one. Clear df by PHM that would have given Gonzo a 1-0 and minibreak . PHM from there returned unbelievably good and got the victory. He deserved it, to of the biggest chicken brains in the ATP TOUR.
Congrats PHM , after so much suffering in front of your home country it looks like you´re smiling again .

I watched the match on tv and both were great! this is the best match that I have seen in Paris this week ;)
Gonzo at some moments looked tired and PHM obviuosly took advantage of that
I love Gonzo but I think the way they both played PHM deserved the win

I'm a little disappointed by the way Fernando played. He made too many mistakes, and was looking tired, too bad he couldn't qualify for Shanghai. Anyway, PHM deserved to win.

Stepanek is beatable, and then probably Davydenko who is also beatable. You just never know, I'm hoping the crowd will inspire him.

I think he can win it too. He has the crowd, he is hungry (ok really hungry) supposedly injury free, the competetion is weak (hate to use that but it is true) his head seems to be calming down, and most of all he has the talent.

But please Paulo if you can just make it in straight sets next time :wavey: lol

I trust him to fight until the very end, to be brave and to make all he can do to win... and I trust the crowd to help him to go in this way

Gonzo's fans are the best. :worship:
It was a great match on his part but it's true he looked a bit tired. It especially showed in the first set because despite PHM playing well he made a few very unusual UEs for him.
 Too bad this match had to decide for a Masters Cup place.

I saw the first set and then the second till it was 5-3 30-30 for Gonzo then Sport Plus switched to the Champions League... in the middle of such a tense important game (!), they could have at least showed the end of the second set...

In this set, you could see the good PHM had showed up, not the one looking like a ghost but the one focused, making aces with his serve on, hitting the ball well etc...In the second set, Gonzo clearly picked up his game and one slip by PHM was enough for him to win it, even if he was very close to the edge each time he was serving...He stayed very solid. He was winning some long rallies with his missile FH.

Then i followed it on the SB and PHM after holding very difficultly at 5-2 in the first set to secure he would serve first in the third, held his serve to love three or two times in a row (don't remember exactly) and then pretty easily, whereas Gonzo held with difficulty (without facing break points at first then with a few against him in the end...). I guess Gonzo served a lot of aces to get out of trouble.

There was this horrible game at 5-5 in which PHM faced a BP, we all thought it had to stop, that he couldn't hold easily not showing nerves for so long and we thought the choke was coming...But he held and then in the tie-break he was ahead most of the time. Now all this could have been because of Gonzo making mistakes too, so i don't know  (for exemple i think he made a df in the tie-break...).

Great match anyway, from both. ;)

I have to admit Gonzo's fans are very fair play. (I know I wouldn't be able to congratulate the adversary in these conditions... )

delsa you have to give some credit to phm,ok fernando gonzalez played more matches and has won Bale last week but he has the advantage of having great confidence because of that.He made mistakes and looked tired but dont forget that it was a masters place who was target by him so more motivation. No paulo, played better in the "key moments" of the match.Sorry for fernando but thats tennis and paulo got his chance, hasnt miss it.

sorry for gonzalez fans,he had a great year and hopefully 2006 will be better ;)

Well, i wished i was in the crowd today because watching the first sets on tv, i thought they weren't fired up enough...
Ok the match was relatively late and everybody's back to work tomorrow, the children weren't there in numbers etc...But still...

That's more the will to do something good in this stadium were he only had lived nightmares before that makes him hungry and the will to save his season and take his chance for once with the "weak field"...
Not like in the USO where he had the best draw he'll ever have (especially for someone with his "luck") :o and didn't take advantage of it because of his stupid badly managed schedule and the injury he got because of it plus a very good Capdeville...(he's in the top 10 of the players having played the most tournaments this year... and he lost so many times in the first round  ).

He's so much criticized or blamed or laughed at (nicely or not...). He must have enough of it and want to finish this year on a good note so that a good image sticks of him until next season.

Really good match from Mathieu, he served and returned well his fh caused damage as always and even his bh was quite solid. I´ve had the impression during the whole match Gonzo wanted to finish too quickly the points falling way many times into precipitations (all his 2nd serves looked for the ace  ), went for the winner asap, like he wanted to save energies I reckon. He only looked more calmed and elaborated more the points in final games.

GL the rest of the tourney, PHM, now beat the Jerk

First of all congratulations to all Mathieu fans. He really played very well and deserved to win. However being a fan of Fena, I am thoroughly disappointed and depressed, as I wanted him to win this tournament and go to Shanghai. But in hind sight, he must have been very tired after Basle, winnning both singles and doubles titles which is an awesome achievement in itself, and understandably he must have been very tired coming into this tournament. This year was fantastic for Fena and let us hope next year will be a very good one. So, I am sure he takes heart in this fact and as his fan, I do too. Next year more titles and in the top ten where he truly belongs. As for PHM fans I hope your man will fulfill your dreams and win the tournament, as he is a great talent also. Vamos Fena in 2006.

I was at the match and as everyone said, Fernando made a lot of mistakes, looked tired. But, Mathieu played well and took advantage of it.
So sad, that he won't go to Shanghai, cause with the Nalbandian's loss, it could have been possible.

Fernando made a great year, and I wish him the best of luck for 2006.

Regarding Mathieu, I hope he'll continue his road in Bercy.
