Ferrero, Philippoussis confirmed for Auckland tournament

MELBOURNE, Nov 2 (Reuters) - Former world number one Juan Carlos Ferrero has confirmed he will return to play the Auckland Open tennis tournament in January, organisers said on Wednesday.

Spaniard Ferrero, the 2003 French Open champion, had an injury- and illness-ravaged 2004 but has spent 2005 rebuilding his career and is currently ranked 19th in the world.

The 25-year-old lost to Czech Republic's Jan Hernych in the first round in Auckland this year.

"It is always a special treat for ... spectators to be able to see a player who has been a world number one," tournament director Graham Pearce said on Wednesday. "Juan Carlos is a class player getting back to his threatening best."

Chile's Fernando Gonzalez, the world number 13, has also been confirmed to defend the title he won earlier this year.

World number 18 Robby Ginepri of the United States has also confirmed he will play, while Australian Mark Philippoussis has been given a wild card for the January 9-14 tournament.

Philippoussis, a former U.S. Open and Wimbledon finalist who was ranked as high as eighth in the world in 1999, has battled injury and a form slump and slipped down the rankings to 172.

"It is a rare event to have a top Australian player in New Zealand and a coup for the tournament," Pearce added.

"We're obviously pleased to have Mark play in Auckland for the first time. As we did with James Blake in this year's tournament we trust we can launch Mark into a great comeback."

The Australian Open, the year's first grand slam tournament, begins in Melbourne on January 16.

Dominik Hrbaty will be returning here. Not a shock tho, as he absolutely loves the tournament.

Yeah, definitely wasn't a surprise to learn that... he's practically considered a 'local' during the Heineken.

And Mark probably thinks he's got a better shot in Auckland... will be very interesting to have a top Aussie player in Auckland, lol.

And...

Tennis: Murray to play in Heineken

08.11.05

It looks like Heineken Open tennis officials have secured another major draw card for January's tournament. Rising Scottish star Andy Murray has told British tennis media he will play in Auckland ahead of the Australian Open.

The full tournament field will be confirmed at the end of the month.

Murray's confirmation is a big boost to the tournament which has already secured four top 20 ranked players.

The 18-year-old has risen to 66 in the rankings in his first year on tour and is billed as the next great British hope.

As a child, he survived the Dunblane Massacre in 1996 where 16 people were shot dead at his primary school

Just read that David Ferrer's been confirmed as well, which takes the number of top 20 players up to 5 - a record for Auckland!

Really? That's great news!!!

Althoug just read that the organisers have denied Guga a wildcard :( :( :( He asked but they said the last wildcard is going to whoever wins the NZ wildcard playoffs. Blah!

The organisers are ungrateful! Guga won this tournament back in 2003 and used to play it as a warm-up for the Australian Open. If the other 2 WC's are also going to players from New Zealand, then this decision makes no commercial sense at all!

At least the organisers are loyal to NZer, lol but I can't believe they're denied Guga a WC! He came back in 2004 and reached the semi's!!! I can understand them giving Mark Nielsen a WC, who's at least partially deserves it.

Even though I'm a NZer, I could much rather see Guga next January than a NZer (who'll probably be knocked out in the first round anyway :p)

Guga announced today that he will skip the Australian Open. Maybe it has something to do with it.
But, anyway, I think he made a good decision not going there. He'll just save some energy for the South-American clay season, where he has a better shot.

Hope you are right, but I feel he could play well in Australia. His best tournament this year was in US Open (hard courts)...
Anyway, good luck to Guga in 2006!

I wanted to see Guga there, but I wouldn't like to see Brazil Open organisers giving only one WC to local players. Maybe they could have given Flip's WC to Guga... (what is Mark doing here?! Guga wouldn't play in Argentina during Brazil Open week)
