:woohoo: Andy badly needed this win. Well done, Andy. This French title marks a few milestones in Andy's career:

~20th title
~300th win in first round
~first carpet title
~only 2nd continental european title
~first late-season title

Plus, the fact that he beat four Frenchmen to win a French title is a big accomplishment as well. :bigclap: Especially to those nitwits who insist that the Americans can't win any titles outside of the US. :p

Now, I just hope Andy will be able to carry this small success over to Paris Masters as well.

I wish I could have seen this one but yeah, they didn't show it.

This should give him enough confidence to go over Paris and get the title... or at least do a really good tourney.

Right... yeah I don't recall anyone here saying this was a big tournament or someone bashing Ljubicic.

We're just saying this IS a big win for Andy because he's been sucking lately and he needed this, and also the fact he held serve the whole week is very important too because he hasn't been very consistant with it lately either. So there you go.

It's okay, we DO understand, no need to be so resentful.

The truth is:
Ljubo fans wil minimise Roddick's successes and and magnify Ivan's.
Roddick will minimise Ljubo's successes (but more politely) and Magnify Andy's.
That's how it work.;)

Roddick is kinda heping Lyon gain a high status :p His presence promotes the Tourney.
If you were a Tournament Director you would invite high ranked players and your tourney gets a high profile over the years. Look at Bankok.....it can be called a Mickey Mouse Tourney but because of Players like Roddick Safin Federer and Hewitt playing it, it isn't recognised as a Mickey Mouse Tourney............that's exactly what Lyon are doing. Who knows next year someone like Rafa might even be playing it :)

Not me. I gained a lot of respect for Ivan when he beat the U.S. in Davis Cup. He's not one of my favorites, but I do like him and think his wins in Metz and Vienna were great. When a player is winning all the time, like Nadal and Federer are now, the fans don't get so excited over a small tournament, but when a player hasn't won for awhile, it's always terrific to win any tournament. Just like it was fantastic for TJ to win in St. P.

First of all- congrats to Andy! Glad to see him get a confident win after a confident tourney. :) And good job Monfils getting to the finals.

Want to go onto something wider here. I am a fan of both Nadal and Roddick and I have noticed a big similarity in how their detractors dismiss their wins.

Supposidly- both-
* Never play anyone highly ranked and/or skilled en route to their tournament victories
* Posses only one or two skills - Roddick- serve and maybe forehand; Nadal, speed and maybe forehand
* Will be kaput by the time they are either 1) around 25 if they are Roddick and 2) around 23 if they are Nadal

It just bugs. It seems like neither can win a tournament without someone making a snide remark about how either the tournament wasn't a big tournament, the field was no good or they were just lucky.

Anyways- congrats again to Andy. I think he has a great chance in Paris. (I think the winner will be either Andy, Ivan or Fena.) Would love to see Gael do a good run at Bercy as well.

Carpet's a lot faster. Most people consider it pretty different from indoor hard - those who do well on one don't necessarily do well on the other. It's one of those weird surfaces that take some getting used to as well, based on what a lot of the players say after their first matches on the surface.

Now that is peculiar thinking.

Because extending that logic, you could say, If you don't win the Masters, winning Paris won't mean shit. Or: If you don't win the Australian, winning the Masters won't mean shit. Or: If you don't win Wimbledon, winning at Oz won't mean shit. Or: If you don't win the Grand Slam, winning at Oz and Wimbledon, won't mean shit.

I think you see where that sort of thinking gets you. The win at Lyon is what it is. It won't mean more and it won't mean less depending on Andy's other wins. It is nice because it means Andy has won on all the different surfaces this year. It isn't as nice because it's not a TMS tournament. But, neither winning or losing in Paris will make this victory any different.

Sun is right on the money here. Your comparsions are off because the Paris is right after Lyon meaning the following week. Andy does need to back up his confidence with a big title or it will mean nothing. He has to keep this streak going or he will go back to being stuck in a rut. Yes, this event was good for Andy to win for his confidence and his ranking points but to be a top player you have to win the big events.

Topspin also doesn't move through the carpet court as well as on hard court, so a highly topspun ball will just tend to sit there begging to be hit.

I've seen the match, because I live closed to Lyon, and i can tell you, andy was really tough during this match, maybe he just lose a dozen of points on his serves, and easily clear two break points in the second set. Gael played pretty well, but not as energetic as usual, his game wasn't really original, there was no variations, that's why andy managed to impose his rythm with his heavy shots. But what really made the difference is andy's serve, never seen such a reguliar and unretournable serve!! Congrats to andy anyway!!! :worship:

:yippee:

Had to do it, gang. Sorry I missed out on the jig.

Mega-congrats to Andy...and all the Frenchmen for a well-played tournament on home turf.

He also did it without losing serve or without losing a set. He's also the only player to win titles on all five surfaces, counting indoor hard as different from carpet
indoor hard and indoor carpet are usually counted as one surface. There is not much difference between the 2. Carpet is equal to fast indoor harcourt surface.

So why bother giving them different names, then??

The two surfaces play differently, Jim Jones. Bob Larson in his Lyon wrap-up counts them as two surfaces.

Congrats Andy. Hope this is the start of a great resurgence. Hopefully, you can begin working your way consistently deep into tournaments as expected. The next year needs to be interesting. You must do your own part to make this a reality.

The two surfaces play differently, Jim Jones. Bob Larson in his Lyon wrap-up counts them as two surfaces.

This is what Larson says: In a raw-power final, Roddick won fifth title of the year 6-3 6-2. In one way, that's impressive: Roddick's five titles are on five different surfaces (San Jose on indoor hard, Houston on clay, Queen's on grass, Washington on outdoor hard, and now Lyon on carpet).

He goes on to say that all the titles are at low level tournaments. You can disagree with him, but normally carpet is counted as a different surface. I think it's more debatable whether indoor hard is a different surface than outdoor hard. The conditions are different because of the enclosure, but I'd like to hear what are the differences between the actual surfaces.

:worship:

Thanks for the first hand report. I'm glad you got to go, and I'd love to hear more about your experiences. :)

Do you think Monfils and Andy chatted about their service motions?

i don't think so, during the ceremony, they almost didn't chat, two or three words, there was no hatred or anything, but it just looked as if they didn't know what to tell each other, they are definitely not closed friends!! so, no, i don't think they chatted about their motions serves! What more can i say about the match? apart it was not a hell of a match, just a good party but certainly not unforgivable!! some great points for each player, their forehands were really impressives, just like canon bullets!! some net approaches for both, almost always successful! but the match was really short, it didn't last a very long time... what a pity, it was such amazing watching those powerfull shots!
