INJURED SAFIN TO MISS MASTERS CUP
Saturday 29th October 2005

Marat Safin will miss the season-ending Masters Cup in Shanghai as he has yet to fully recover from the knee injury which has blighted his season.

The world number five has been battling to get fit after suffering a ligament tear in his left knee shortly before Wimbledon.

The injury hampered his progress at SW19 and forced him to miss the US Open, and he has been unable to take to the court since his defeat to Robby Ginepri at the Cincinnati Masters in August.

"This is the best thing for him to do, not to play," said Russian Davis Cup captain Shamil Tarpischev, who added that Safin would rest for the remainder of the year in order to be fit for next season.

"He must first get 100 percent healthy before stepping on the court again. The most important thing is to prepare well for the Australian Open, where he must defend his title."

Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Lleyton Hewitt and Andre Agassi have all withdrawn from the Paris Masters next week, but all are expected to be fit to play in Shanghai.

"Qualifying for Shanghai is the perfect end to the season," Agassi said. "Shanghai’s commitment to host the Tennis Masters Cup for the next three years at the incredible Qi Zhong Stadium is such a great testament to the growing popularity of tennis in Asia. I’m really looking forward to playing in front of such great fans in China, at an incredible new venue."

2 years ago Andre arrived at the Masters Cup after a couple months away from the tour, and he made it to the final (with some impressive matches along the way). His ball-striking ability comes back incredibly quickly after a break. :worship: I assume he is staying in good physical shape. I think he'll be fine, and I imagine he will go. It's quite an achievement to have reached the TMC again.

I wish that Andre achieve something more there!

There's quite a lot of gossip coming out of Germany that Steffi's mom is quite ill...I have some issues with what comes out of any newspapers...so I don't report this as fact...but if there is any validity to the stories, I think we have another piece of the "personal reasons" issue that kep AA out of Paris...and puts another question mark about his appearnce not only in Shanghai, but how much (if at all) he will play next year.

Ljubicic completes Masters line-up

Gaston Gaudio's defeat handed Ljubicic a place in the Masters Cup in Shanghai

PARIS, France -- Croatian Ivan Ljubicic has grabbed the last remaining ticket to the eight-strong Masters Cup.

Ljubicic qualified for the semifinals of the Paris Masters by moving past Spaniard Tommy Robredo 7-6 3-6 6-1.

His main rival for the last remaining spot at the season finale in Shanghai, Argentine Gaston Gaudio, lost any hope when he was beaten 7-5 6-0 by Czech Tomas Berdych in the quarterfinals.

The other two players who still retained a theoretical chance, Robredo and fellow-Spaniard David Ferrer, dropped out of the race by both losing in the French capital.

Ljubicic joins Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Andy Roddick, Lleyton Hewitt, Andre Agassi, Guillermo Coria and Nikolay Davydenko in the Shanghai field.

Russian Davydenko lost to Czech Radek Stepanek in Paris on Friday but had already done enough to qualify by reaching the quarterfinals.

World number one Federer confirmed his participation on Thursday after recovering from injury. Argentine Coria's qualification was announced the same day after Australian Open champion Marat Safin said he was withdrawing with a knee injury.

Roddick unsure about Masters Cup because of back pain
Sunday November 6, 3:54 AM

PARIS, Nov 5 (Reuters) - World number three Andy Roddick fears he could miss the year-end Masters Cup because of back pain.
Roddick was hampered by a sore back during his 6-3 7-5 defeat by Croatian Ivan Ljubicic in the semi-finals of the Paris Masters.

The American, who received treatment twice during the match, had also suffered in his quarter-final win over Spaniard David Ferrer on Friday.

Berdych beat Ljubicic in Paris today to win his first ATP Masters Title. That stops Ljubicic from getting an extra 30 points and closing on Andre!!!!!!! Ljubicic is 8th, just behind Davydenko in race as we head to Shanghai!

After Paris 2005 final:
http://www.atptennis.com/en/graphics/race_head.gif
1st Federer, R. 1245
2nd Nadal, R. 953
3rd Roddick, A. 617
4th Hewitt, L. 498
5th Agassi, A. 455
6th Coria, G. 438
7th Davydenko, N 418
8th Ljubicic, I. 416
9th Gaudio, G. 370
10th Safin, M. 346

I predicted such list, but instead
of Davydenko should be
David Nalbandian :(
and instead of Coria - Safin...
