Great result for Murray. After the second set I thought that Berdych would be too strong for him, but the errors that Tomas was making really set these two apart.

I was reading in the other thread about this match that if Berdych was on form he would win but if he wasn't Andy could win and how it was all about how Berdych would play but he is now 29-29 for the year. Surely those 29 losses can't all be put down to Berdych not "being on his game" and that he would have won otherwise. Other players are simply better than him on the day. Like Andy today.

Pretty awful match from both players, but Murray was smart enough to put balls back in play at 3-3 in the first and third sets and let Berdych self-destruct. In tandem the two of them gave the worst combined display of body language I've ever seen on a tennis court, but at times you would probably have thought Berdych was the younger man judging by the extent to which he blamed the court, the linesmen, the umpire, his racquet... he simply has a high-risk game that means his level of play fluctuates wildly from point to point. Murray will actually be facing a lot more consistency from Gonzalez tomorrow, which sounds like an odd thing to say but the latter does hit with considerable spin and therefore a bit more margin for error. It'll be an interesting tactical contrast, they really would have needed body armour for the line judges if it had been Berdych v Gonzalez.

i only caught the last 3 games of the match as i was at badminton training but in those 3 games berdych acted like a spoilt brat... the very spoilt brat that Andy has been accused of this year! i think its just a thing in all young players and they will all grow out of it

Well hey, you have to keep the ball in play in the first place to let your opponent beat himself - in that sense, I suppose you are dictating the match on your terms. That's what some people never appreciated a couple of years ago when they said Nalbandian only beat Federer "because of Roger's errors", when the former extracted those unforced errors with his consistency.

overall to me Murray looked the more mature player in this match and its just weird how Berdych selfdestructs on some important points. whats with Andy's love for dropshots, certainly he has skill for these kinda shots though in the beginning they were a bit :retard: lets see how he will do against Gonzalez who'll be hitting equally hard but has much more experience so yeah it wud be tougher.....but I have to admit it, there's somethin about Murray that I reeeally like :o :shrug: :crazy:

I can't believe it! What a match that was! Not the most beautiful but Andy showed his maturity and he had a cooler head than Berdych, which resulted in him winning, whilst Berdych just lost his cool. Regarding Andy "haters", I think after Wimbledon there was a lot of hype without much results to back it up and it didn't go down too well with a lot of people who felt he didn't deserve it. However since he has won a couple of Challengers, qualified for the US Open and got to the Thailand final the people complaining he was all hype and no substance have less to argue with and therefore there is not as much people making negative comments about him. There will always be people who don't like his attitude or game etc. but the people complaining about the over the top hype can't say that any more (or as much as they did) after his recent results. There definitely used to be a lot more bad things said about him before Thailand than now and Andy's fans would defend the - often unmerited - criticism, so his fans can still just a bit defensive in his threads, can't we Murraymount ;)

That sums up well the situation about him. At first, I thought he was really overhyped when I heard about his first results on clay in challengers (which is supposed to be his best surface - what I don't think now). At Queens, he put some good results but even then not enough to back the hype and hype was already gathering pace. At Wimbledon, I understood he was really special when he beats Stepanek. I saw it, and I liked what I saw. Since then he has put very good results but IMO, there is nothing so far which would make me think that he will be bigger than Djokovic, Monfils or Berdych. All of them will be big and top 10 at some point IMO (but none of them will be as good as Gasquet or Nadal IMO again).

I can see your point. Henman's recent form has been horrible and Berdych hasn't done much since the US Open.

In that respect Gonzalez is a different test for Andy. A player in decent form unlike his previous two opponents.

Though Gonzalez's hit or miss style is not that dissimilar to Berdych's. And Murray's style of play may limit Fernando's freedom to hit his customary number of winners.

Yup. I agree with this. I expected Murray to beat Henman and considered Murray the favorite against Berdych but I don't see Murray getting past Gonzalez tomorrow. Gonzo is playing awfully well right now. Also if Murray wins he will not be able to take up his place in the Paris qualifying. So Murray will know he has a substantial consulation prize should he lose.

Murray fans are very defensive but they have reason to be. Alot of people have not warmed to him partly because of his getting so much attention so early but I think also his personality hasn't endured him to quite a few people. I certainly think right now one can say for the most part he is deserving of a large chunk of the attention he is getting but his Hewitt-like personality still annoys me alot.
