Murray

I'm no huge murray fan by any means but i do have a question about him.

While all the new up and comers were being talked about (monfils, nadal, gasquet) why did i never hear murrays name mentioned when people were asked who looked to be an up and coming player.

The reason i ask this is because it seems that before wimbledon he wasn't even considered a possible pro yet, and now he is beating some of the better players on tour (obviously not the top tier yet , but 2nd and 3rd tier guys) and easily making his name known in the top 100.

sorry, i was just curious because until wimbledon of this year i hadn't even heard his name mentioned on these boards or on tv.

Andy rocks:rocker2:

There are a few reasons, to start with Murray's only entered the pro tennis circuit this year (I believe the other young players you have mentioned have been around for a bit longer), he was also a very low ranker player before Wimbledon. Obviously he's being British and with Tim out of the tournament so early resulted in good media coverage for Andy. He beat a seeded player and had a great match against Nalbandian. The British press went crazy about him since and he has done very well so far, as you should know.

Just because he is a brit and they are dying for some one at the top or at least a Brit that can win Wimbledon and Myrry comes....he is talented but most of all he is smart and knows the formula to win exactly what the Brits are starving for......

He got a lot of wildcards.

I see a lot of people claiming that Murray has haters... again and again... and again. But I rarely see the people that are supposedly hating on him?

Maybe if you stepped down on your Anti-Haters Inquisition, people wouldn't feel so annoyed.

I understand the part where the british want him to be a great player obviously. But he's a great young player (all of you that disagree, i'm just saying, he's how old? 18-19? and he's a top 100. he must have some sort of talent if he's there) But i'd think that even some of the young players that never break the top 100 get pumped up on these boards and on tv (aka donald young) and yet murray was never talked about.

DId everyone just assume that he didn't have it in him? or he didn't have the weapons?

Not many people knew about him because he was still playing futures events but the british people knew about him with the scottish in particular. Last year when he won the Junior US Open people started to open their eyes and realise his potential and what about top tier players? Ginepri, Henman, Stepanek, Schrichipan they sound pretty top tier to me..... Federer is on his own little tier as far as im concerned if you were on about that top tier?

I heard all about Murray last year when he won the USO juniors. Where were you? :p

As was already pointed out, if people weren't continually pumping out threads about him between then and Wimbledon, it was probably because he did nothing of note during that period and was still ranked outside the top 200.

He's been talked about over here (UK) for a bit longer. A fair few people thought that he did have it in him, but not that he would make the progress he has done as early as 2005. He was 'one for the future' as opposed to one for now.

by my opinion there are quite a few tiers in tennis
Top tier consists of
federer
at this point you're right, nadal is just a quarter step behind fed soooo
Nadal (how in the hell did i forget the raging bull)

2nd tier consists of the consistant top 10ers
hewitt
roddick
safin
agassi

3rd tier consists of the players who are top 20 and sometimes fake their way into the top 10
nalbandian
ljubicic
gonzo
Ginepri

To claim that henman is even
a 3rd tier right now would be a hard arguement.

Chloe le Bopper

I'd put Coria in there over Ginepri. Coria has been a consistent top ten player for a while... has Ginepri even been top 20?? Oh, what do you know. He is right now. Er, still. Coria has proven that he can post decent results over more than a few months and managed to stay in the top ten even after all that time off with shoulder problems.

And don't foget that the guy has only won 3 titles in his whole career, which is even more amazing for a regular top 10.

The people who give him shit, there aren't as many as there were and I have said countless times, were the ones who made up false stories about him slagging off Scoville Jenkins' net play, calling Nadal, Nalbandian etc shit and saying he started the Stepanek spat despite them not seeing the match.

Woah woah woah....I'm a HUGE nalbandian fan. I have been ever since i started watching tennis on television, and i agree he definatly has the ability to be a top 10 and a top 5 even.Theres nothing i can do about keeping him from being injured, or just plain not winning the big matches, therefore he is ranked around 7-15 most of the time, and until he pulls out of this funk and wins a couple tournaments and maybe a slam in a given year, i dont' think you can put him in the same tier as the others.
