The Basel quarter final between two of the most overexposed players on the ATP tour.

Who will win Chucho Acasuso or Smiley Baghdatis?

This should be a fun match and it's good whoever wins. I mean Chucho making a semi indoors, would be funny and Marcos having some good results again is good to see.

Got to ask the tough questions and there might even be true fans interested in this match, naive I know.

come on Marcos, live up to your overhyped image and prove Eurosport right for having you on often enough last year, and win.

I'd say Chucho in 3. But if it's the other way round, I won't break down and cry. All I'm asking for is that they both give what they have to give. The outcome isn't what matters most. Well, it isn't, for me. :)

I'm happy to see that Marcos is putting again some good results. I hope that he wins, but Acacuso has just eliminated Ferrero, so the latter is the favourite.

Why is Acasuso overhyped? I have a feeling that he gets too little attention since so many of his compratiots are taking his place in the spotlight.
Baghdatis is definitely overhyped, but will climb the rankings slowly.

To answer your question, I think Chucho will win in 3 sets.

Chucho doesn't play well when he is expected to win, and with him beating Ferrero, he will be expected to win this match and Marcos plays well against better players.

I'd see Marcos winning that one. Just because for many he's the underdog and he likes these kind of "symbolic matches" where he has the opportunity to proove something and to silence his critics (not that he has that many...) a bit in a way...

While the title is supposed to be sarcastic, I do believe that both are overhyped.

There was tons of hype for Baghdatis after he took a set of Federer and was the world number one junior. Many people expected him to be a top 20 player this year.

As for Jose Acasuso, he's not overhyped many places, but he's overhyped on this board. I've seen numerous posts saying that he was "top 10 headcase" or potential "top 5 player".

Acasuso has been playing great this whole indoor season. Big surprise. I think his only dissappointing match was against Chris Rochus. The key with him is that he is probably serving bigger than at anytime in his career and he is learning how to use that weapon indoors. He has been very tough to break. Bagdatis hasn't really beaten anyone that impressive (ok Haas maybe but he was hardly playing that well) and just squeeked by Bob Bryan in a 3rd set tiebreak in qualifying. I would go with Acasuso in 2.

Acasuso has about 7 fans and at most 10 fans on this board, true definition of overhype for sure. Who has said he is a potential top 5 player? You're cracking jokes in a big way, next you will tell me that Mantilla was overhyped. Yes, he can make the top 20 and has ordinary mental application, not overhype.

Baghdatis top 20, who was saying that, can't make that from where he was ranked by missing 6 months of the year.

Yeah, the 26 people that rallied for an Acasuso player forum aren't fans. But alright, y'know 26 and 7, pretty close together...

Hmm, Robby Ginepri - ranked 98 after Newport, 3 months later he's in the top 20.

As for this, I'm not going to argue because I don't have time to keep checking up on this thread response. You will never concede an arguement and I won't either, so here ends it for me. I don't agree with you, you don't agree with me. The end.

In other words you won't answer the questions, that's fine with me. Well not all the people that ask for a forum actually post in there, if you bothered to look in there you'd see there are 7 core members.

Ginepri didn't have 6 months of being injured, did he? It's not conceding an argument, I asked relevant questions about the subject, you just chose not to answer them.

Chucho has to serve well, he did serve 18 aces against Ferrero, but he is also capable of some poor stuff as well.

It is quite difficult to pick this one. I want Chucho to win in 2, but wouldn't be surprised if Baghdatis can come through and take this match.

If Marcos wins it will be I think his first semi at the main level and for Chucho his first semi final off clay, so good luck to both guys and the voting is close.

Chucho has 15 and Marcos has 14 votes.

A great result for Marcos, making the semis :D I hope he stays healthy in 2006. Chucho shows some consistency lately, he had a good hard court/indoor season and he may build up from here in 2006 (so he succeeds in exiting GWH's thread of frustrating players)

Marcos kept fighting and Chucho had the match in his control, being a break up in the first 2 sets, but not captialising when it was there, so it is good to see Marcos make his 1st semi final, but Chucho had a good week and that is two weeks in a row, where he fell in tough matches.

It was a joke, though some people took it seriously. I am very aware of both of these guys and their abilities, the earlier responses show how serious the overhyped label was.

Wow!!! Great job Mir'us! I left for a lecter and he was down a set and a break, this is really great and made my day. I can't believe this run he's on now, this could really be a great push forward if he wins again.

This result will keep Marcos safely in the top 80 for a while now, considering it covers his Bratislava result later in the year.

I am also sad for Chucho. It would have been great to see him play well where we all know he can, with his serve and stylish groundstrokes. I was actually hoping to see him get far in RG this year after beating Roddick, that would have been interesting.

Baghdatis puts Cyprus on right track

BASEL (Switzerland): Marcos Baghdatis feared his career could be over when French doctors dropped an injury bombshell after a career-best fourth-round performance at the Australian Open.

The 20-year-old from Cyprus was told he faced surgery to correct a congenital problem where a pair of muscles were constricting a nerve on his hitting arm. “They said I’d lost 40 percent of my muscle,” said Baghdatis, who moved into the first semi-final of his fightback career Friday, defeating Argentine Jose Acasuso 6-7 (2/7), 7-6 (7/5), 6-3 at the Basel ATP tournament here.

He more than demonstrated how well the February medical procedure had worked as he blasted over a dozen sizzling aces on the way to victory. “I’d had pain for six years, they told me if I kept going I’d have just a few more months left on the arm,” he explained.

His career hanging in the balance, the player who moved to Paris for training at age 14, living with a French family while remaining separated from his own, willingly went under the knife. After three months of recovery and rehab, he resumed and is now reaping the rewards of his tough, yet mature and forward-looking, decision. “It was scary when I first heard I needed an operation,” he admitted.
