Hurrah - Roger's off crutches :). His ankle is still swollen (?) but he's planning to start running next week and then play tennis.

So cute from Rafa too - calling Roger "number one".

frBOTH TENNIS PLAYERS MAINTAIN A GREAT RELATION Federer did a visit to him surprise to Nadal in Basel Two dry blows and discreet they sound in the door of room 449 of a luxurious hotel of Basel. Very nice, diplomatic, always says the right things about the right players, always gives his oppenents credit and has always talked up his oppenents! He should run for office somewhere after his tennis career! I remember James Blake said Roger was the only player to send him a message in the hospital after he broke his neck (although his fellow American players did visit him in the hospital). And Roger also sent Kim Clijsters an SMS after she won the US Open. I read the next day he saw her in the players lounge and gave her a big hug. And then the recent story that he and Mirka had dinner with Lindsay Davenport in Zurich before she played the finals there. Is there anybody he's not schmoozing with on the tour?

well he has won about everything there is to win, so hey, why not make a social event of it. create friends or whatever that last beyond tennis. i mean it has to be somewhat boring to just do tennis and never really communicate or bond with other tennis players of the same quality. i think it is interesting for all these players to meet, talk, and learn about each others lives. And boy does Roger like to text message, wonder if any of the other players text message as many people and as often as he does? would be more than interesting to see all their inboxes.

Roger went there to kill Rafa, he knows Rafa is going to take his number 1 spot. Fortunately, Rafa is superior in every way, and ended up beating the daylights out of Federer and tied him up until the police arrived to escort Federer away. The whole story about the friendly visit is a cover up. You won't see Federer play tennis for a while because he's locked up in a Swiss jail.

Here's a really good translation of the article from vr.com

Federer y Nadal antes de su semifinal en Roland Garros. (Foto: EFE)

Basel (Switzerland) - Two sharp but discrete knocks on the door of room 449 in a luxury hotel in Basel. Rafael Nadal, world number two, opens the door. "Hola, Rafa!" Roger Federer says to him. "Eh...! Hola, how are you?" replies Nadal, almost unable to believe that it is the world number one that is there.

Federer, recovering from an injury and on his first day without crutches, had decided to pay a surprise visit to his young rival, the man with whom he shares the domination of world tennis. Nadal had arrived in Basel an hour earlier to dine with the organisers of the local tournament, from which he had to retire because of tendinitis in his knees.

"Roger phoned me and asked me where Rafa was staying," explained Vittorio Selmi, the ATP tour manager. When I told him which hotel, he said right off: 'I'm on my way there'. "

Federer lives in Basel, which made the meeting easier, although there are not many sports where the number one has such an open frank relationship with his closest rival. The Swiss is the indisputable leader but Nadal, after a marvellous season, has equalled his eleven titles in 2005.

The Spaniard had just won the Masters Series Madrid on Sunday night, one of the most important victories in his career, when his phone vibrated signalling that he had a SMS. "Hola, hombre! Rafa, bueno tenis y Madrid! Muchos contento Rogelio por te". The message in a mixture of Spanish and Italian had been written by Federer to congratulate the Spaniard for his triumph in Madrid. Nadal is in the habit of calling Federer "número uno" or Rogelio, and the Swiss has obviously taken the nickname well.

Contact was resumed on Monday night. They were not able to talk for more than twenty minutes because Nadal had tournament obligations to complete. But Federer had time to ask him about how things had gone the previous week in Madrid. "It was very hard, I thought I was going to lose for most of the match," the Spaniard confessed to the Swiss in more than acceptable English.

Federer took off his shoe and showed Nadal the state of his ankle, still very swollen after the torn ligaments he suffered ten days ago. There was one topic that could not be forgotten - football! Federer once again lamented the fact that he had not been able to play in Madrid and had had to postpone his long awaited meeting with his childhood idol the Frenchman Zinedine Zidane.

"Are you going to go to Shanghai?" Nadal asked. Federer smiled: "I'm doing all I can. Next week I'll start to run a little, and then I'll try to play some tennis." "There is a glimmer of hope," said Selmi, thinking of the Masters Cup that begins November 13.

There was no time for any more. Nadal dashed off to the dinner - where he left a great impression speaking English much more fluently than he does in his press conferences - and Federer stayed and dined at the hotel. It was midnight when they met again, one on the way to bed and the other on the way home. They greeted one another again and once again wished each other good luck: the number one and the number two want to continue their conversation in Shanghai.

Hee! So cute! :) Rogelio+ Rafa = TLA :hearts:

It's wonderful to see such friendliness between the top two players on the men's tour. Respecting and treating your rival as an equal is a superior trait. It's far better to try hard to beat each other on the tennis court than to belittle the other's achievement. It's great. Goes to show how nice Roger is, and it can only do him and tennis good that he seeks to create a friendly relationship with just about everyone on the tour (except Soderling :tape: ). Also nice that he had dinner with Davenport, but he should've sent a message to Schnyder, or does her usual bitchy behavior turns him off? :p

Nadal also comes off as a nice guy outside the courts, :yeah:.

So is roger playing in Bercy next week??

Unfortunately, I doubt that. He said that he would try running next week (but could be later this week), and play tennis later on. He'll need all the time he has until Shanghai to prepare himself decently. I guess that settles it for no Madrid/Basel/Paris the second year in a row.

This is odd, I'm sorry.

It's not usual, but why are you sorry? Seemed a bit negative about it.

I don't think that Federer would have done that with anyone else like Hewitt or Roddick. Its nice to see the amount of respect they have for one another and the friendship they have.

I don't know, I think he might have done that with Hewitt. It seems Hewitt is the one he genuinely likes the most, I don't know why. I think he would if Hewitt had showed up injured to turn pull out of the tournament. And definitely if he had just won a big tournament in the last week.

IMO Roger seems more friendly with Hewitt and Safin, then Nadal, then Agassi, then Roddick. That's between the top crew, obviously.

Rafael Nadal: The Manwhore of Manacor

Nadal is such a tramp! Moya, Lopez, Ljubicic and now Fed. Hmm, lend me some sugar! :aplot:

Not to mention Roger's sluttiness. What happened with Andy? Was he just leading Andy on?

Poor Andy. Roger will give him some love when he starts to win again. ;)

Hurrah - Roger's off crutches :). His ankle is still swollen (?) but he's planning to start running next week and then play tennis.

So cute from Rafa too - calling Roger "number one".

Thank you very much for posting this, Alvarillo.

"Federer, recuperándose de una lesión y en su primer día sin muletas"

Yes this was indeed the best sentence I read from the article. Es una excelentisima noticia para todos los aficionados del tenis y de Roger. :bounce: :bounce:

I am also very happy with the comraderie or however its spelled between these two. :D

It's not usual, but why are you sorry? Seemed a bit negative about it.

I didn't mean to sound negative. I'm not. You are right, it's a great thing actually. My two favourite players are good friends and that's a great thing. It's strange but it's great, I actually like that.

It's great. Goes to show how nice Roger is, and it can only do him and tennis good that he seeks to create a friendly relationship with just about everyone on the tour (except Soderling :tape: )...
What? Is he friends with Nalby too now?? :aplot:

OMG   I think Rafa can really say: you like me, you really like me :D

This is odd, I'm sorry.

I don't think it's odd. If you think about it like this, they work together. Everyone has friends at work.. Roger and Rafa are obviously friends. Being rivals doesn't mean you've got to be enemies. Plus, both Roger and Rafa seem to not involve themselves in petty crap which is very admirable.

Roger is a little social butterfly. He seems to be a Chatty Cathy off the courts.

And Rafa called Roger to congratulate him after his Wimbledon and USO wins. It is great to see the top two players getting along so well. Andy has been praising Roger to the high heavens for a while, and this year Rafa has really been singing his "I heart Roger" tune. :inlove:

Rafa is so spontaneous and natural. His kid's heart is still unspoiled. The one and the two are really nice guys.

Rogelio and Rafa :inlove: .

*Edit*
Thanks for the translation CB. Hadn't seen it when I first posted. This is so heart-warming. :)

Its pretty lucky Roger and Rafa fans don't get on as well as the players do, it would be very boring around here if they did :p

Says who? Adg   :smooch:

About the jail story, don't forget it was Rafa who made the first step. He called Rogelio first last week and begged him to play Shaghai because it is not the same without him. :p

Actually Roger made the first step earlier in the year, after he beat Rafa in Miami he actually offered to practice with him if he ever need some help or advice!

Oh, ok. I'm sorry I misunderstood your post.

What? Is he friends with Nalby too now?? :aplot:

Ops. :o

How could I've forgotten about Nalbandian, Fed's biggest "enemy". Well, maybe they're not friends afterall but I'm sure in no time Roger won't seem so bitter about him. Actually, Dahveed has began to prove some Rogi Love already!

I think that was on the court not off the court. ;)

And I was talking about the latest news. :D

Thnaks ClaraBow for the translation...I think it was a friendly gesture and that Roger and Nadal may well like each other, but I think it was in part because Nadal had to pull out of the tournament, too.

what a fantastic article!!...Both players are amazing and completely down to earth. The sports journalists must hate this aspect of mens' tennis...there are players who can get on w/ each other w/o belittling each other.

both world class!!

jumping to conclusions based on postings by some members of this forum. Whether he has a girl friend or not, or whether he prefers the company of men is totally irrelevant to his proffession as a tennis player. I don't have an idea as to why you would be discouraged by a perfectly normal activity on the part of Rafael Nadal. May I ask you how many friends you have of your own sex/ gender?

my god, such a strong reaction and was totally unnecessary, really.
i know its totally irrelevant to his profession. i was only joking in relation to his supposed love affairs with carlos, ivan, etc...
well, if you can't take jokes like that, then it is not my problem, is it?

I can take jokes, but IMO your "joke" was in total bad taste.
