It's incorrect that he was named as a newcomer.

For those who don't know he qualified for Monte Carlo when he was 15, he beat Davydenko and Squillari in the qualies, not a newcomer.

As fantastic as Nadal was this year, I don't see how he could possibly win player of the year. Federer has just been better. Almost any other year it would go to Nadal, but he just wasn't quite the best this year.

I also don't see how Newcomer can really to anybody aside from Monfils or possibly Murray if he spikes his ranking a little bit more before the end of the year. Seeing as Monfils jumped 200 ranking places, is a lock to end the year in the top 40 and has a shot at an AO seeded (where he needed a WC this year, if I'm not mistaken) won a title and made another final, I think he wins. Murray's ranking jump was more impressive, but aside from that he has some ground to make up.

Don't get me wrong, we're all entited to our opinions. I'm just trying to use some objective criteria for mine :p

I'd have Federer as Player of the Year, for the fact that he's been scoring better results all year, winning titles on all surfaces, and he's gone deep into any GSs this year. Aside from winning the French Open, Nadal hasn't shown enough in other GSs.

Yes, he's been the one setting the tennis world on fire this year, but I don't know... I'd still have Federer over Nadal for that award for the reason I've stated.

I guess you didn't see the horrible match they played in Davis Cup in March against Sherwood and Murray :o  :tape:  :banghead:

Player of the Year: Roger Federer (the numbers and titles speak for themselves)

Comeback Player of the Year: James Blake (with his career in jeopardy after breaking his neck and the trauma of losing his father to have the results that he did and play the way he did was amazing!)

Most Improved: Rafael Nadal (you could hardly tell the difference between the Rafa of January 2005 and of the present. Improvements in game, incredibly high learning curve and of course if you are going for numbers starting the year in the 40's and ending it at #2!!!)

Newcomers of the Year: Richard Gasquet (apart from Rafa IMO made the biggest impact of all the other youngsters although this wasn't his first year on tour it was the first year in which he started showing real glimpses of what a great player he can become by producing some fine results!)

Doubles Team of the Year: - (I don't really follow doubles all that match s I will refrain here)

Best Tournament of the Year: U.S. Open (the highlights being Blake's and Agassi's great runs and of course your favourite player winning an event is bound to make it a great one for you)

Best Match of the Year: Miami final Federer vs Nadal (we were exposed to what will potentially become a great rivalry for years to come plus the comeback element in it was great!)

In case it hasn't already been mentioned, Gasquet was already up for Newcomer of the year..... back in 2003. I remember thinking at the time that it didn't make a lot of sense to include him since he hadn't played a full year on tour... but there you have. He shouldn't even be up for it this year, he's not a newcomer.

Nadal was the star of the year, more people talked about him then Federer, but Federer clearly had a better year. I can't wait until the start of next year or the ending masters of this year. I'm hoping Federer faces off against Rafa at the end of the year and beats him in straight sets. Not because I don't like Rafa, but I think Roger is better and it would really get a lot of people into it. If Rafa beat Roger, it would do the same thing, I just think it would be cool to have the King fight off a worthy Adversary!

This was his first full year on the ATP, last year he played several ATP tournaments, as well as challengers. This year he played Napoli and Barletta and hasn't played a challenger since, which is why I included Gasquet.

If Gasquet doesn't count, then the newcomer of the year was Gael Monfils (even he played Metz and Paris last year).

Well, he was absent for a while and then returned - I call that a come-back.

I know he cheated but the reason for his absence is irrelevant.

Jim Blake is a nicer story but he hasn't done quite as well.

well, i do hope they meet each other in the final at the end of the year. it is the only true and fitting way to end the year. and i am not sure who i want to win, but i will say this i am tired of 'the king fighting off a worthy Adversary.' Although I guess some could say that Hewitt and Roddick over the past couple of years haven't really been worthy Advesaries. anyway, just my opinion.

Nadal was the star of the year, more people talked about him then Federer, but Federer clearly had a better year. I can't wait until the start of next year or the ending masters of this year.
