Why does Nadal bite his trophies?

Apologies if this has been discussed before, but I'm curious about this gesture of Nadal's (personally, I find it endearing). It seems to be a tradition with him. Does anyone know what's behind it?

I think that its cute too.

I may be wrong, but I think someone said that Carlos did it awhile back when he won a big tournament.

Anyone remember if that's right?

Aw, the ass-picking is just to calm his nerves. He shouldn't be visualized for that, poor soul. :D

On a more serious note about the rambo look, over here in stores his outfits are by far the most wanted. My brother and many of his friends in the tennis club walk around in sleeveless shirts (piratas not yet :p), I think it's cute; it also shows Rafa's popularity btw among young kids, they look up to him.

I just think tradition is way overrated. Times are changing in all areas so it's only natural it happens in sports too, and tennis. Change does not equal disrespect or being obnoxious.

Going back to the question of the thread.
Nadal bites his trophies for 3 clear reasons:
1- Because he is able to win tournaments.
2- Because he has (white healthy) teeth.
3- Because he feels like doing it.

Obviously you're not being serious here but if I have to choose between a beige cardigan or colorful sleeveless shirts, or even the decade-old Agassi's mental-patient-chosen outfits, my choice is quickly made.

Maybe Fed was supposed to represent classic tennis with that cardigan, but he looked like a peepaw to me. Not appealing at all.

Then his game. What does it matter how he plays, how much of a golden touch he has and how he runs around the court on tip-toe when the rambo tennis takes him down time and time again?

If Fed wants to turn this negative spiral around he'll have to change. His ballet tennis is obviously passé.

It's rather funny how Nike markets both of these athletes, and it's even funnier how much people indeed seem to be buying it (especially if you take into account that both guys in private appear to be rather preppy guys). Ah, All You Need is Cash, no...

For realz? Zomg!1111111111 ~shock~ ~jawdrop~

I'm well aware there are people out there outside the 5-20 age category, but I wasn't talking about them. My point is that children don't look up at Fed the same way they do at Nadal and with my 'they look up to him' comment I wanted to point out they'll be playing tennis after his example, and they're the future. You see it in tennis clubs with young kids, they imitate his game and the way he dresses. And isn't that what Fed fans are whining and bitching about lately? That power tennis played by supposed clowns will be the future? Well, take away his unique look and I'm quite sure this Nadal imitation will become a lot less. But the interest too imo.

Superficiality is as human as anything else.

It's equally disrespective to call tradition 'overrated' as it is to dismiss changes and evolution of the game.

But I'm not saying there should be no tradition at all, am I? E.g. I'd hate it if they'd ditch the white-clothes-at-Wimbly rule. But yes, I find tradition overrated and in a way caging too. You should be able to do what you want 'till a certain level, and if you wouldn't be allowed to pick your ass or bite a trophey, well I'd find that quite disturbing really. Next thing they'd be forbidding scratching your nose. Saying tradition isn't all that isn't disrespectful at all imo, in my eyes that's just the truth. We need to go forward, and not back as some people on MTF who seem to be living in the past.

Lots of kids used to worship Britney Spears and most fangirls wanted to wear thongs to resemble her

Just a question, how can you possibly make this statement. Know one knows what's in the mind of children all over the world. I would imagine there are groups of kids that idolize and look up to a lot of the top players.

You have never heard of the style figure 'hyperbole'?

Cool it, lady. I wasn't attacking you, just reminding you that there are plenty - even young - people around who don't fall for Rafa's looks. I've seen Federer signing autographs for hundreds of kids as well, as strange as it may seem to you. As I said - different tastes for different people.

Hell, there are even people liking them BOTH.
