The Harry Potter appreciation thread!

Well, we've got threads for just about everything else one of us likes :p And besides, once we get some discussion going on in here, I'll be more likely to respond in a timely matter, instead of forgetting for months at a time like I do with PMs :p

THREAD INFORMATION AND RULES:

THIS THREAD IS NOT SPOILER-FREE! We discuss events through Book 5, so if you haven't finished that yet and don't want to be spoiled, stop where you are.

Fans of different ships post here; don't bash someone who likes the idea of Harry/Hermione just because you're dead-set on Ron/Hermione. That's stupid.

If you're new here, please take the time to read through the previous posts so we don't end up discussing the same thing over and over again. Unless its a really good topic and we want to. Also, feel free to pose a question for discussion. We don't bite.

Hee. Hee. Marly's awesome.
Okay, let me think of a discussion question.
All right. Who is your favorite marauder and why?

Murkofan
09-14-2003, 02:10 AM
Lupin! Because he's cool :p He's smart and he's got that whole semi-tragic feel about him, but it doesn't seem to have affected him as much as Sirius's experiences have done to him.

I mean, yes, Sirius was in Azkaban for like 13 years, but it obviously didn't drive him insane like it does most people.

Lupin, on the other hand, had two of his best friends murdered, and thought for 13 years that his third best betrayed the first two and murdered the fourth. How major is that? And on top of everything else, he couldn't take care of Harry (I'm assuming because of the werewolf thing) and barely survives on the fringe of society. But he's not as consumed with revenge or as manic depressive as Sirius. Lupin rocks :yeah:

Who's your favorite? And for the next question...what do you think of Ginny Weasley?

Kate05
09-14-2003, 05:36 AM
Sirius. He's a smartass and sounds sexy and I picture a dirty Christian Bale everytime I see him. Although I do like Lupin because he wasn't an asshole back at Hogwarts like Sirius and James were.

I love Ginny now. I was pretty much indifferent to her in the first 4 books because she had no character development. She was just a simpering little fool with a Harry crush. Even though in the 2nd movie Bonnie Wright played her so cute when she first saw Harry. Anyway now she rocks, she doesn't like Harry anymore and she's all feisty. Girl can stick up for herself now.

ok here's another question for y'all. What couples/potential couples do you like?
I ship James/Lily, Harry/Hermione, Draco/Ginny, and Ron/Luna.

Ok this is officially my favourite thread!!!!

Sirius is my favourite, i am still so traumatised that hes gone!!! I just love his whole bad sexy thing and omg i loved all the things he said my favourite line from the 3rd book 'its nothing 2 be proud of that u made a better rat than human, peter' lol hahahaha and i love how much he loves harry (poor harry has no1 now ) , but yeah i like lupin 2 i feel so sorry 4 him his 2 best friends dead and the one that is alive is a rat (literally and figuratively).

With the couples i reckon ron and hermione are gonna get 2gether, theres so much tension there.

and ginny i like her so much more after reading the 5th book because yeah now we actually got 2 know her u know and shes more her own person not just ron's little sister.

I'm a Lupin fan as well.
It always seemed odd to me that he wouldn't tell Harry right away that he had been a good friend of his father's--but then, I suppose he didn't want to remind people of his connection with Sirius. I just think Lupin is a great teacher and a very responsible parental figure, like Molly Weasley but less crazy. :) And I hope we will see much more of him. Hopefully he can be a new window into Lily and James for Harry, one I hope he takes advantage of.
How come we haven't met any of Lily's old school friends? She must have had some.
This is a long post, so I'll do Ginny a bit later. But my ships are Ron/Hermione and Lily/James.

Murkofan
09-14-2003, 05:10 PM
I've wondered about Lily too. What's with it always being pointed out that Harry looks so much like James, but has green eyes like Lily's? Hopefully we'll meet another friend of James/Lily's that's in the Order in one of the next books.

I love Ginny. I thought her crush in CoS was adorable ("his eyes are as green as a fresh pickled toad" :p) and I always wanted her to have a bigger part in the books. I thought it would be cool for her get closer to the Trio, in part because Hermione needs a girlfriend to gossip with :p Ginny is just awesome in OotP. She snaps Harry out of his poor-pitiful-me crap by reminding him that she was possessed by Voldemort, helps kick butt in the Department of Mysteries, and best of all, snatches the Snitch right out from under Cho Chang's nose

On that note, I ship, not surprisingly, Ron/Hermione and Harry/Ginny ;)

Kate05
09-14-2003, 08:03 PM
omg I'm surrounded by the shipping enemy. :p

Murkofan
09-15-2003, 12:28 AM
Pff, how can you ship Harry/Hermione? :p Not that we're going to argue about it or anything  :p

Btw, I also ship Fred/Angelina, Bill/Fleur, and Lupin/Tonks :p

Kate05
09-15-2003, 01:14 AM
Now there's some ships I like. :D

I got really freaked out when I read OotP because most of the major novel fanfic writers have Bill/Fleur in their stories and one has Arabella Figg as a squib and they actually came true. I seriously got chills when I read that in the book.

Okay, here are my Ginny thoughts:
I had very little use for Ginny until the last book. I feel like Ginny finally has a personality (and a good one, at that). And the scenes with Ron talking about her boyfriends were absolutely priceless. I'm not quite a Harry/Ginny shipper yet, but I think they'd be good together and it certainly looks like Rowling is going to go in that direction.
I've never actually thought about Lupin/Tonks. Interesting.
Okay, new question: Are McGonagall and Dumbledore secretly married? Thoughts please.

Murkofan
09-16-2003, 07:05 PM
Is it just me, or is Ron a Harry/Ginny shipper? :aplot:

Tonks is

McGonagall and Dumbledore aren't secretly married, but they have both hidden a torrid, long-simmering passion for each other from each other for the 30 some-odd years McGonagall has been teaching at Hogwarts. Perhaps with the return of Voldemort, one of them will finally let down their guard and make a move before its too late

On that note, I think Professors Vector and Sinistra are having an affair :p

Kate05
09-16-2003, 11:37 PM
I want to be Tonks when I grow up. That is all. :p

It's not just you. I really hope we'll learn more about the times Lily and James escaped Voldemort and what it was about the fourth time that led to their deaths.

Murkofan
09-17-2003, 09:00 PM
Wormtail blabbering to Voldemort was what led to their deaths :p But I know what you mean.

New discussion question: who is your favorite member of the Trio and why?

Peridotpixie
09-18-2003, 02:30 AM
Ooh, Marly, that's a really good one. And tough.
Okay.
My favorite, by a very, VERY narrow margin is Hermione, because she kicks butt and is incredibly smart and always knows what to do--even when they don't listen to her. She's practical, which Ron and Harry are definitely not. Come to think of it, Ginny's practical as well. I wonder if that's on purpose? Anyway, at the same time, she's definitely feminine. And I love how Rowling uses her to show that muggle borns are just as good as everyone else and any argument that they're not is disproved by her existence.
But I also love Ron, because he's perfect. His quirks, awkwardness, sarcasm, jealousy...he's just perfect. And I love that Rowling really brings home that being the hero's sidekicks can be used as difficult as being the hero, for different reasons.

Murkofan
09-18-2003, 08:22 PM
My favorite (by not so narrow a margin) is also Hermione. I have loved her since her first appearance in SS, even though at the time I couldn't pronounce her name :p

She's smart and stubborn and determined and passionate and self-righteous and self-conscious and antagonisitc and is somewhat lacking in social skills...I identify with her a lot :p

Of course, I also love Ron for a lot of the same reasons. Which is why I am so pro-R/Hr. All relationships should have a fair amount of passion and bickering :p

First of all, let me apologize in advance to Kate for this link, but its too funny to pass up :p

I think this sums up the idea of H/Hr, and Harry's expression is a fair imitation of mine at the thought of it :p

 I don't care in the slightest. More and more people are starting to say that Daniel and Emma have such intense chemstry for young teenagers and that they should get together. I'm still slightly  at all of it. Emma does flirt with him like mad in interviews though, but hell who wouldn't? He's hot for a 14 year old.

I couldn't pronounce Hermione's name until I saw the 1st movie.

I love Ron. He's funny and sweet and has a wicked jealous streak. I think Rupert Grint really made me love him even more than I did before the movies, he just totally brought that character out.

What? I haven't picked up on Emma and Daniel and having any more intense chemistry than Emma and Rupert do. Let's see what the whole cat/rat fight and makeup hug in PoA brings to the table :p And I think it's kind of odd that people think they should date in real life. They're kids, give 'em a break.

I couldn't pronounce Hermione's name until I saw the 1st movie.

The brilliant LG was able to tell me how to pronounce it properly :p

Okay, ermmmm, new discussion question, new discussion question....oh, okay: who do you think will be the next to die and why?

Peridotpixie
09-19-2003, 09:22 PM
Oh! What an awful question. Okay, let's see. I'll run through a few characters

Harry/Ron/Hermione--if any of them die, it won't be until book 7--and I honestly think they'll all make it. People would scream bloody murder if Rowling killed off her hero, and I think she loves Ron and Hermione too much and is too invested in their future to let them go.

Neville--Oh, I worry. But he could be a brilliant triumph story by living, so she might go that way. If he does die, I don't think he'll be next.

Dumbledore--He'll die, probably. All great mentors do. But next? I don't know. I think McGonagall will live.

Hagrid--it would be pretty cruel to kill of all three of Harry's father figures, and of the two left, I think Hagrid has better odds of surviving the series.

Remus--Oh, I hope he lives. And I think he will, if only because he's the last real link to James and the last marauder standing (we're not counting Wormtail.)

Weasleys--well, I think the twins are safe, and I think Molly is safe. We don't know much about Bill or Charlie, so I don't know about them. Percy is, as far as I'm concerned, in serious jeopardy, as is Arthur. Ginny should make it to the end.

Slytherins--I'd like to think that Lucius will get his, but he seems to have a knack for surviving. I think Draco will live, at any rate. Snape--not so much. He'll either turn out to be evil and get killed or die a heroic death of some sort proving his goodness once and for all.

So, all in all---Well, I hate to say it, but my guess is Arthur Weasley. The mythology about king Arthur dying in a battle with Lucius is just too obvious to be ignored. Don't get me wrong, I love Arthur and will cry lots if he dies. But I wouldn't be surprised. If it's not Arthur because Rowling doesn't want to be THAT obvious, I'd go with Percy.

Peridotpixie
09-19-2003, 09:24 PM
By the way, take no stock in my predictions, because I NEVER would have guessed--wait, is this a spoiler free thread? Err...I hope not. At any rate, I didn't guess ___ would die in book 5. I did once I started reading it, but not beforehand--it just seemed to cruel. It still does. I can't think about it, I'll get all weepy.

Murkofan

Ditto that. I have a friend who is dead convinced that Harry will die in Book 7, but I think that's rubbish. These are great books, yes, and they're dark and getting darker, they're CHILDREN'S books. I just can't see JKR killing off one of the Trio. And if she does, I'll write an angry letter :p

Neville--Oh, I worry. But he could be a brilliant triumph story by living, so she might go that way. If he does die, I don't think he'll be next.

I think Neville had his triumph story in OotP. Which isn't to say that I think he'll die; I'm not sure. I actually hadn't thought of him as a candidate at all until you brought him up :p I'm leaning toward him living, though. I hope he kills the Lestranges

Dumbledore--He'll die, probably. All great mentors do. But next? I don't know. I think McGonagall will live.

Yep, I think Dumbledore is a goner. But in Book 6 or 7? It would be great (well, not great, but you know what I mean) if he died at the end of Book 6 and left the Trio and the rest of the Order to stand against Voldemort and the Death Eaters alone. I also think McGonagall will live.

I'm so torn over Hagrid. I think it would be horrible if he died, but I can totally see it happening, maybe trying to save the Trio or Dumbledore. I think Lupin has a better chance of living than Hagrid or Dumbledore, though I wouldn't be too surprised if he died as well. The deaths of all the Marauders and Lily (because I think Wormtail will die) can be traced back to Voldemort being able to turn Wormtail all those years ago.

While we're on the subject of Wormtail, though, I think he'll end up helping to save one or more of the Trio. Remember in PoA, when Dumbledore or someone told Harry that saving another wizard's life creates a bond? I don't know, I just have this feeling that Wormtail will do something to help Harry. He may do it out of cowardice rather than any remaining affection for Remus or Harry, but he'll do it. As sappy as it sounds, I would really really like it if he were at least partially redeemed.

Weasleys--well, I think the twins are safe, and I think Molly is safe. We don't know much about Bill or Charlie, so I don't know about them. Percy is, as far as I'm concerned, in serious jeopardy, as is Arthur. Ginny should make it to the end.

I think the twins and Ginny will definitely make it through, though one or more of them will probably have at least one close call. I think the most likely to die will be Percy; I'm so curious as to whether he'll come back to the family in Book 6 or stay away out of shame and pride. I hope Bill and Charlie live. I think they're cool :p

Slytherins--I'd like to think that Lucius will get his, but he seems to have a knack for surviving. I think Draco will live, at any rate. Snape--not so much. He'll either turn out to be evil and get killed or die a heroic death of some sort proving his goodness once and for all.

I used to think Draco had a chance to be redeemed, but after OotP, I doubt it. I keep remembering the look on his face when Umbridge was going to use the Cruciatus curse on Harry. Nobody who could get such warped pleasure out of another person's pain could be good. Since Lucius was arrested, I'm sure Draco is going to be even worse in Books 6 and 7.

I hope Hermione nails Lucius for all his anti-Muggle born crap  Or Ginny, for the diary

My vote is for either Percy, Hagrid, or Dumbledore. I don't think it would be too far-fetched if they all snuffed it, but I don't have a guess as to who I think buys the farm first.

I don't think this is spoiler free :p Everyone in here seems to've read everything. I didn't guess Sirius would die either, but I have to admit I was relieved it turned out to be him, because I was afraid for Neville.

09-20-2003, 09:01 PM
You're doing good, Marly, but I'll try to come up with one next time. :)

Okay, my biggest ship is R/H. Why? Because they're obviously meant to be together. (Sorry, Kate.) All the chemistry in the books is leading up to it, and Rowling seems to be a R/H shipper as well, from her interviews. Yeah, Harry appreciates Hermione and loves her as a friend, but Ron is completely committed to her and loves her in a way Harry never could.
Actually, I've always wondered how H/H shippers work--if they actually expect them to end up together or what, because I just don't see anything that points that way. I think Rowling has gone out of her way to show that the relationship between Harry and Hermione is strictly platonic. Maybe Kate can explain it.

Lily/James is fun because we don't know too much about them, so there's more freedom with imagination. Also, from what we can put together from the books, James was a really cool guy. A bit of a jerk in fifth year, but a cool guy nonetheless. I imagine James as really smart and really bold.

Murkofan
09-21-2003, 05:03 PM
Thanks Jilli. I just don't want any of y'all to think I'm the boss of the way the thread goes. :p

My biggest ship is also R/Hr. Unresolved sexual tension, people! :p I know it doesn't appeal to everyone, but I love the way they bicker. I'm a big bickerer myself, and I would be bored stiff in a relationship like H/Hr. Yes they're very good friends and they love each other and all that, but Hermione drives Harry up a wall and vice versa. She nags and he tunes her out. Ron and Hermione pick at each other and bicker, and while they do truly get upset with each other, it doesn't last long. Their one and only big fight (unless you count the Yule Brawl, which I don't) was the cat/rat thing in PoA. There is also the fact that I just love both characters and think they're perfect together and all that :p

I wonder about H/Hr shippers too. Is it just something they decided they want, probably because the R/Hr bickering doesn't appeal? Because I haven't seen any evidence of it in the books. Then again, I could just be blind :p

I also ship H/G. In OotP, Ginny was the most effective at getting Harry out of his dark and self-absorbed moods. I think she may also have been one of the few people he didn't yell at :p As Ginny pointed out, she's the only person (that we know of so far) that's had a run-in with Voldemort remotely like Harry has. I think she'll have a bigger part in the next two books and may give Harry a kind of comfort and understanding that not even Ron and Hermione can provide. I believe we can expect big things from Miss Weasley :p

My friend Kyla and I have a theory for all this that we like to call The Star Wars Precedent. Anybody care to guess what that means? :p

Han and Leia, of course.

I'm going to start a new question, but other thread visitors, please answer some of the older ones as well.

Okay. In your opinion, who is the best Harry Potter villain? Who is the most evil Harry Potter villain? Are they the same person, or not?
Off the top of my head I can think of: Voldemort, Wormtail, Lucius, Draco, Umbridge, Fudge (sometimes), the Dursleys, and Bellatrix.

Murkofan
09-22-2003, 08:25 PM
Oh man, that's a good one!

Well, the most evil has to be Voldemort, of course. He's a psychopathic, power-mad multiple murderer. That doesn't speak highly for his character...and then there's the fact that all his Dark magic has given him red snake eyes and a flat nose. Gross.

The best villain is much tougher. I think the most interesting are Wormtail and Bellatrix. I'm SO interested in finding out more background on the Marauders and Lily, and what happened with them and Voldemort back in the day. My first thought is that Wormtail is just a weak, slimy little traitor, but knowing JKR, there'll be more to the story.

Bellatrix is fascinating. She's crazier than Voldemort! Seriously, what a complete and total nutter. She's the worse kind of fanatic. But finding out that she's Sirius's cousin just blew my mind. Can you imagine how much integrity Sirius must have had to grow up in the Black family and reject everything they stand for?

Another interesting thing about Bellatrix is that she's Narcissa's sister--unexpected, but not surprising--but Andromeda's too. We don't know much about Andromeda, but she too must have had a lot of courage and integrity to break away from that family and marry Ted Tonks, a Muggleborn. And her daughter is an Auror, fighting evil Aunts Bella and Narcissa and Uncle Lucius. It's nuts.

Han and Leia, of course.

You'd be surprised how many people are  over that. So many people have missed out on Star Wars, poor things.

I just edited my first post to add some rules and info; if anyone else has any good ideas, tell me and I'll add 'em.
