He's not AS fat anymore. Tarpischev convinced him to have a farewell match and he's losing weight for that. The golf pics aren't TOO recent.

You know, I read in a recent article that Russians are starting to have shorter and shorter life spans, mostly because of their poverty; but, also another factor is: Obesity, Alcoholism, Smoking. These are problems that plague any society, but are much more prevalent in the depressed and gloomy country of Russia ... just food for thought ... maybe Kafelnikov will join part of that percentage ... let's see ...

He's obese.
He drinks, I'm 100% sure.
Smokes ? If you drink, probably.

It's just a Russian trait, these people are very eccentric in their ways ... so it doesn't suprise me that he's turned into such a disgusting slob after not even being retired for 10 years ... anyway, anyone care to wager some vcash on the over/under of Mr. Kafelinkov's life span ?

:) Keep up the good work!

I am Russian. My grand-grandmother lived 101 years. My granny is 86 and is still working at her strawberry fields like a tractor.. First, Russians are not obese. At least comparing to Americans.. Second, alcoholism is more of an attribute of a previous generation. Third, a lot of athletes gain weight after they stop training. Fourth, Kafelnikov will be in a Hall of Fame within 3-4 years... Wanna wager some cash on it?

And tennis magazine dared to put Rafter ahead of him. Nothing against Patrick but Yevgeny has more titles and was an amazing doubles player. Just because he wasn't that hot for U.S. women and less charismatic :p

An elite athlete who quits training will put on weight in no time. It has to do with what your body is used to do and what it is used to eat. If an ex-athlete wants to remain pretty much the same he has to be careful what he eats and also do quite a lot of cardio exercise, so not really surprised knowing he has picked up poker and all... :)

eat all you want.

True true but there are some health concerns to be considered once one gains more than 20 lbs over the suggested or ideal wait for a given body type and build. Eating without control or in an unbalanced nature, can only exasperate your arteries, clog them with cholesterol and then all those nasty cardiovascular diseases start debilitating you to the point you have to be dependent on hypertension and cardiovascular disease medications.
