Agassi looking unsure for Stockholm Open

Sat Oct 23, 2:59 PM ET U.S. National - AFP

STOCKHOLM (AFP) - Andre Agassi's appearance as top seed at the 632,750-euro Stockholm Open next week was in doubt after the American lost a tough semi-final at the weekend in Madrid.

http://us.news2.yimg.com/us.yimg.com/p/afp/20041023/capt.sge.umt93.231004185930.photo00.photo.default-367x277.jpg

The straight-sets defeat to Marat Safin may have dulled the 34-year-old's desire to carry on in the fight for one of the four spots remaining for next month's Masters Cup.

By contrast, going into the Kungligahallen with an opening contest against Belgian Kristof Vliegen could be just the spark he needs to fight on.

"I'm scheduled for it," was Agassi only explanation to a direct query as to whether he will play the penultimate week of the ATP regular season.

With Swedes a given at the home event, fast-rising Joachim Johansson is installed as number two, with a first match against Adrian Garcia of Chile.

Only one other Swede rates a seeding, with Robin Soderling on sixth with a starting assignment against former champion compatriot Thomas Enqvist.

From 1995-2000, Swedes claimed five of six titles at a tennis arena built nearly 80-years ago by a tennis-loving monarch.

But Thomas Johansson was the last home champion back in 2000, with subsequent titles going to Dutchman Sjeng Schalken, Thai Paradorn Srichaphan and American Mardy Fish, who beat Soderling a year ago.

Romanian Andrei Pavel is seeded third, ahead of Germany's Tommy Haas and Spanish fifth seed Feliciano Lopez, champion at Vienna a week ago.

Andy Roddick has already pulled out, blaming a knee injury and suspicions are growing that the American, already qualified for the Masters Cup, won't return to Europe prior to December's Davis Cup final against Spain.

Seeds: Andre Agassi (USA x1), Joachim Johansson (SWE x2), Andrei Pavel (ROM x3), Tommy Haas (GER x4), Feliciano Lopez (SPA x5), Robin Soderling (SWE x6), Tomas Berdych (CZE x7), Ferndnao Verdasco (SPA x8)

Agassi Heads Field After Roddick Exit at ATP Stockholm

Posted on October 25, 2004

Andre Agassi leads the field at the ATP stop in Stockholm this week after the withdrawal by fellow American Andy Roddick (knee injury), joined among the top seeds by Joachim "Pim-Pim" Johansson, Andrei Pavel, Tommy Haas, Feliciano "F-Lo" Lopez, Robin Soderling, Tomas Berdych, and Fernando "Hot Sauce" Verdasco.

After losing in the semifinals last week to eventual winner Marat Safin at the Masters Series-Madrid, a Stockholm title would go a long way in helping the former No. 1 Agassi qualify for one of the remaining spots at the year-end Masters Cup.

Opening-round matches of interest on the indoor hardcourts are (1) Agassi vs. hard-hitting Belgian Kristof Vliegen, (8) Hot Sauce vs. Robby "Baby Courier" Ginepri, (6) Soderling vs. Swedish countryman Thomas Enqvist, and (5) F-Lo vs. Jeff "Baby Krajicek" Morrison.

Returning champs in the field are Paradorn "The Thai Fighter" Srichaphan (2002), Sjeng Schalken (2001), Thomas Johansson (2000), three-time winner Thomas Enqvist (1999,'96-95), and Jonas Bjorkman (1997).

On court Monday in Stockholm are Nieminen vs. Gambill, Calleri vs. (3) Pavel, T.Johansson vs. Malisse, and Ginepri vs. (8) Verdasco.

Agassi Arrives to Stockholm

On Tuesday, this years main attraction Andre Agassi arrived to Stockholm. The No. 1 seed is in Stockholm for the first time in 10 years and is looking for his 60th title.

In an incredible career, the American has won eight Grand Slam tournaments including four titles at the Australian Open, two at Wimbledon, one at the French Open and one at the US Open. Despite all the success, the 34-year old is still motivated to compete for more titles.
- Im very clear about the fact that I want to play next year. I want to win more Grand Slams, Agassi said at the highly anticipated press conference.

The American seemed pleased to be back in Stockholm after all these years. When he was here last time, the tournament was played in the Globe Arena.

- This seems like a great facility for the fans. Driving through the city today was a great feeling. Its so beautiful here, the American star said.

Agassi will be in action on Wednesday, October 26, 2004, when he takes on Kristof Vliegen from Belgium.

Agassi: I am ready to fight

STOCKHOLM: Andre Agassi returned to Sweden for the first time in a decade yesterday and pronounced himself ready to fight to reach the season-ending final as he plays as top seed at the 632,750-euro Stockholm Open.

After a business trip to Paris, the 34-year-old arrived in the Swedish capital ready to launch his campaign for a spot in next month's Masters Cup with this week and next remaining in the regular tennis season.

While yesterday's pullout in Basel by world number one Roger Federer – already qualified for the year-ender – doesn't affect the points race, it does inject some drama in the sprint to the finish for other contenders.

Federer said he has a thigh muscle tear but is expected to be fit – if short of match play – when the Masters Cup starts in Houston on Nov 15.

Agasssi has to be pleased with his own fitness as he aims for a fourth consecutive appearance at the elite Masters.

Agassi, 33-12 this season with a trophy in Cincinnati, stands eighth in the race to the Masters Cup, with four spots in the eight-man field remaining open.

The American veteran, who last year finished runner-up to Roger Federer, is 54 points behind Tim Henman, who is trying to make ground this week in Basel.

Should he do well here, Agassi could pull to within 15 points of the Briton to set up a showdown among at least some of the six major contenders.

Agassi opens play against Belgian Kristof Vliegen and is seeded for a potential final against fast-rising Swede Joachim Johansson, the number two.

Agassi already senses a major difference in conditions from Madrid.

“The court is quicker than Madrid but the balls are heavier,” he said.

“As there is no altitude, things are different. But they feel fine to me.”

Agassi re-confirmed his vow made last week to play a full schedule in 2005.

“I'm very clear about the fact that I want to play next year. I'll give it a chance.”

In first-round results, German fourth seed Tommy Haas scored his third career win against Italian veteran Davide Sanguinetti 7-6 (7-5), 6-4, while qualifier Janko Tipsarevic took out seventh-seeded Czech teenager Tomas Berdych 3-6, 7-5, 6-1.

Feliciano Lopez, the fifth seed who won the Vienna title a fortnight ago, defeated American Jeff Morrison 7-6 (7-5), 7-5 while Olivier Rochus beat Swede Johan Settergren 6-3, 6-2.

Agassi Storms Through

Andre Agassi scored a comfortable win against Kristof Vliegen on Wednesday night.

The American super star was given a huge support by the crowd in Stockholm. The people were very happy to have the eight-time Grand Slam champion back for the first time since 1994.

- To get the feeling of support is an incredible feeling. It’s one of the things that make me keep on going, the happy 34-year old said at the press conference.

Agassi was never in any real trouble against the young Belgian. After breaking the young Belgian early on, Agassi cruised through the first set. Vliegen raised his game as the match went on, but still couldn’t hinder the American from winning 6-2, 6-4.

- This was a nice way to get started. The conditions were very different than last week so I knew there were some adjustments that needed to be made.

In the next round, Agassi will play Jonas Björkman. Agassi is up 3-0 in the head-to-head statistics, but Björkman had his chances in two of the matches. At the Olympics 1996, Björkman was a break up both in the first and second set, but lost to the eventual champion. In the round of last 16 at the Australian Open 1996, Björkman was up 2-1 and lost in five sets.

- Jonas does many things well on the court, he’s good in a lot of areas. I’ll have to play well, Agassi says.

The American has a lot of nice things to say about being back in Stockholm.

- Stockholm is literally one of the most beautiful cities in the world. The arena is great, it’s so intimate, you feel that it is special to be here, Agassi exclaims.

Agassi Wins Opener in Straight Sets

By STEPHAN NASSTROM, AP Sports Writer

STOCKHOLM, Sweden - Andre Agassi won his first Stockholm Open match in a decade, beating Kristof Vliegen of Belgium 6-2, 6-4 Wednesday.

http://us.news1.yimg.com/us.yimg.com/p/ap/20041027/thumb.sto80310271923.sweden_stockholm_tennis_sto80 3.jpg

Agassi, 34, entered and exited the court to standing ovations.

The eight-time major champion broke Vliegen twice in the first set and was never challenged in his own service games. In the second set, the top-seeded Agassi broke Vliegen for a 2-1 lead, then got broken back to 4-4. But Agassi won the next game at love, then served out the match.

"It got competitive in the second set," Agassi said. "He started playing much better and broke my serve. Then I played a really good game to break him.

"It was a good match for me, a good way to get started. The first one you always worry about, especially if you've never played somebody before."

In the only second-round matches involving seeded players, No. 3 Andrei Pavel defeated Michal Tabara 6-3, 6-3, and 2000 champion Thomas Johansson outlasted No. 6 Robin Soderling 1-6, 7-6 (2), 6-4.

Agassi lost in the Stockholm Open quarterfinals in 1989 and '94, and in the second round in his only other appearance, in 1990.

"To feel the support grow every year has been an incredible feeling," Agassi said. "This is such a great place to play. You walk out there and it's so intimate. You feel like it's really special to be there. It's a special night to play here. I love this environment. It's great to be back."

Agassi's next opponent is Jonas Bjorkman, the 1997 champion, who came back to beat Wayne Arthurs 4-6, 6-4, 6-4.

Also, Olivier Rochus beat qualifier Janko Tipsarevic of Serbia-Montenegro 6-4, 7-5 to become the first player to reach the quarterfinals. He'll face Tommy Haas or Kenneth Carlsen on Friday.

Wild card Michael Ryderstedt defeated Oscar Hernandez 6-4, 6-4, and Raemon Sluiter beat Jan Frode Andersen 6-3, 6-4 in other first-round matches.

Andre Agassi, playing in Stockholm for the first time in a decade, advanced to the quarterfinals with a 6-3 6-4 win over 1997 Stockholm Open winner Jonas Bjorkman. Agassi is the top seed of the Stockholm Open. This was Bjorkman's 12 th appearance in the event.

Andre Agassi, who leads all active players with 59 career titles, will play Spain's Fernando Verdasco for the first time on Friday. The 34-year-old Agassi is 0-2 in the quarterfinals of the Stockholm Open, having reached this round in 1989 and 1994. He is in eighth position in the INDESIT ATP 2004 Race with 402 points, and trails seventh place Tim Henman by 56 points. Agassi must finish in the top seven to qualify for Tennis Masters Cup in Houston. He would earn eight points with a win over Verdasco. The Spaniard is looking to reach his fourth semifinal of the year, and his first in a non-clay court event.

Agassi Defeats Björkman

Andre Agassi booked his ticket in the quarterfinals after a convincing victory against Jonas Björkman.

The star from Las Vegas seems to have continued the nice form from Madrid. In the fourth meeting between the two, Agassi never gave Björkman any real chance to get into the match. Agassi was very consistent from the baseline dictating the points in his trademark style.

After 70 minutes, Agassi was able to call it a day’s work after 6-3, 6-4.

- I’ve got to be happy about the way I handled Jonas out there today, Agassi said at the press conference.

In the next round, Agassi faces Fernando Verdasco, a young rising Spaniard who had just turned four years old when Agassi won his first title in Itaparica 1987.

- You have to be at your best every day, you can’t think about tomorrow. What’s required every day is different, you have to be better than one player, the American diplomatically said on the question whether the game he displayed today would be enough to win him his 60th career title.

Agassi hammers home favourite Bjorkman

Andre Agassi brushed past Jonas Bjorkman 6-3 6-4 at the Stockholm Open on Thursday to set up a quarter-final meeting with Spanish sixth seed Fernando Verdasco. "It's much more pressure for me because it's important that I'm the best over-30 player," joked the 34-year-old top seed.

"It was very important for me today to make sure he wasn't getting the confidence because when has a litle bit of confidence he plays unbelievable, so I felt good about everything I did today."

The American top seed never allowed 32-year-old doubles specialist Bjorkman to find his rhythm in the opening set as he dictated the basline rallies, rarely allowing the Swede to apporach the net.

He broke Bjorkman's opening serve game for 2-0 and then broke to love for 5-1. Some careless play by the American allowed Bjorkman back to 5-3 but Agassi made no mistake in his next service game and he clinched the set 6-3.

Bjorkman looked like he had found his groove in the beginning of the next set as he became more agressive and lifted his serving, but Agassi improved too and broke him in the fifth game and again in the seventh with some powerful returns to make it 5-2.

Bjorkman clawed his way back to 5-4 but Agassi clinched the match 6-4 on his first match point.

"Jonas is going to get his breaks of serve because he returns so well, I was just fortunate to be up two breaks of serve when I lost my serve in both sets. That made for a much easier day," said Agassi.

"To deal with Jonas the way I did today wasn't easy to do, so I have to feel good about many parts of my game for the match to go in straight sets."

Earlier in the day German fourth seed Tommy Haas needed just a break in each set to oust Dane Kenneth Carlsen 7-5 7-5 to book his place in the quarters where he faces Belgian Olivier Rochus.

Swedish wildcard Michael Ryderstedt staged the biggest upset of the tournament so far when he beat Spanish fifth seed Feliciano Lopez 6-4 6-7 6-3.

Ryderstedt faces second seed Joachim Johansson in an all-Swedish quarter-final. Johansson outpowered American Jan-Michael Gambill 6-4 6-4.

Andre needs many points, because Henman, and Safin won yesterday, and they can score more points on their tournament.

50 pts for the winner, and here in Stockholm only 40 pts.

J-Jo retired so the other semi will be a Swedish wild card v. T-Jo. The AA/Haas winner should be the favorite in the final.

Safin & Henman lost today (Nalbandian is still playing) & Coria withdrew from Paris so AA's chances of qualifying for Houston are slowly improving. As long as he keeps winning, he will have a shot.

Agassi and Haas Set Up Dream Semifinal
When the first two quarterfinals were played on Friday, favorites Andre Agassi and Tommy Haas came through to set up a dream semifinal.

Haas was up against Olivier Rochus. Despite a good fight by the small Belgian, the former World No. 2 was the player that came out on top after 6-3, 7-6(4).

Having been out of tennis for more than a year, Haas has experienced a great comeback season winning two titles and has re-established himself as a top player.

- I appreciate the fact of being healthy. It was a tough 15-16 months. Now, I’m feeling comfortable with my game again, the German says.

34-year old Agassi played against one of the new kids on the block, 20-year old Fernando Verdasco. The Spaniard put up a strong performance and the first set could have gone either way. In the tiebreak, the experience of Agassi paid off as he won 7-4. In the next set, Agassi got an early break and this ultimately decided the match.

- In the second set, I got more serves in and felt comfortable, Agassi said at the post match press conference.

This was the first time that Agassi faced the young Spanish player, and the American was impressed with his opponent.

- He’s got a very nice looking serve this is a big weapon for him, Agassi says.

Agassi and Haas know each other very well. They have both practiced at the Bolletieri Academy and have played eight times on the tour. Agassi has won five out of eight times and won in straight sets in their biggest match in the final of Rome TMS 2002. Their two most recent match-ups were during the American hard court season. In Los Angeles, Haas won a close three set match in the quarterfinals and went on to win the title. A little more than a week later, Agassi won their first round match in Toronto.

- In my opinion, Tommy is one of the best players in the world and should be up there at the top. He does a lot of things very well on the court, Agassi said about his next opponent.
