I guess that now some croatians supporters will begin to say that Ljubo has been robbed, when it's a GREAT lie .

As far as i remember, there were 3 incorrect calls, two of them harmed Nadal and the other one harmed Ljubo

2>1 = who was the person robbed ??

And according the 3rd point of the tie break when Nadal has hit a fh winner , Ljubo has prostested a lot saying that the ball was out , but the Tv replay has shown that there wasn't no separation between the line and the ball, and acording the RULES, when there's no separation the ball is correct ..

Congrats to both players for their performances. Ljubo was a warrior surviving the last 2 matches that he should have lost, and that took it out of him, whereas today he couldn't take his chance to win.

Well done Rafa for winning an indoor title.

Here is the spiel Nadal only won cause Federer, Safin and Hewitt were out, plus Ljubo was tired and choked it away.

Ljubo there is a DC to win, so take the week off from Lyon and come back refreshed in Paris.

Yes, once difference between Nadal, Federer and Roddick this year in winning on these surfaces.

The first two won a Slam and a TMS on these surfaces, whereas the other character didn't, that should say enough.

The Master Series Streak continues with either Rafael and Roger dividing the spoils between them. This must be the first time two players have been so dominant on the tour. After the Australian open in 2006 I bet these two will have every grandslam and Masters series plus the Masters Cup tied up between them.

Tennistically Ljubo has been superior if we take the match on the whole . In the two first sets Ljubo was dominating Nadal as he wanted from the baseline and Rafa couldn't be aggresive..

But from the third , Nadal raised his aggresiveness and Ljubo's gasoline tank was ending and it's obvious that this match has been won by Nadal thanks for it was at the best of 5 sets..

Congratulations for Ljubo, he made a great match , and also congratulations for Nadal because of his fight, and above all his great pair of balls ( in my opinion only Hewitt is superior in this aspect ) because he has got to manage the pressure in the fifth set when Ljubo was always serving first and the pressure was for Nadal, and above all , in this tournament played in altitude and also in indoors, has been able to win his 4 tie breaks, facing 4 very good servers ( Hanescu, Stepanek , Ginepry and Ljubicic ).

Although he should improve in the aspect of beginning less nervous the matches because he was broken against Hanescu and Stepanek when he began serving the match, and after in the press conference he always said i was nervous blah blah blah, it's time to improve this aspect, a player who has won a David cup, a Grand Slam, and now 4 masters series shouldn't begin the matches as nervous as he begins them sometimes .

agree with this completely, and don't want to make an excuse for rafa, but it was on an indoor court(which ljubicic is definitely better at), it was in his home country, and he was in a final on this one. The other matches, he doesn't really have any reason to be nervous. I agree though, I think his mind lets go sometimes during the match, and as mentally tough as he already is, I think he needs to work on that too. just my opinion and doesn't matter for anything.

First, :hatoff: to both players - I'd have been in hospital if I played as much and as hard as Ivan and Rafa have these last few weeks.

 For Rafa, not getting discouraged when he was down 2 sets and a break and basically pulling off a Roger (when Fed came back to win Miami after Nadal led by 2 sets and a break).

Ljubicic probably did play better, and won more points, but at the end of the day the scoreboard doesn't lie and Rafa made less than half the amount of UEs that Ivan did. I thought it was so sweet when Rafa put his head on Ivan's shoulder and was really talking to him (any idea what about? I imagine it was them discussing pulling out of Basel and Lyon respectively  ).

I was a bit :( about the Madrid crowd though - they were really starting to get disrespectful by yelling out and being noisy after Ljubicic's missed 1st serves.

Anyone else catch the bit when they were doing the coin toss and Lars said it was best of 5 TB sets and Rafa said "5 tiebreaks?" - I wonder if he knew it was going to reach the 5th set tiebreak.

Another question: Roma wasn't a best of 5 TB sets, right? I thought it ended 8-6 in the 5th. My commentator said all the Master Series events are best of 5 TB sets but that can't possibly be right because Canada and Cincy have always been best of 3 TB sets.

This match summed up every reason why I like Nadal. An absolute fighter.

Hopefully this might shut a few people up. Props to Ivan on a great run, but Rafa's self-belief is quite unbelievable. To beat Ljubo indoors should give him a lot of confidence, I still think Rafa needs to improve his serve if he wants to challenge the likes of Federer on grass/indoor, but other than that he's beyond criticism. The improvement in his backhand in such a short space of time is incredible, and his serve has certainly improved although it still needs to get better IMO.

Great job Raf :worship:

Nadal's face after the two first set was very sad and i thought he was goona fall in 3 sets, but he has got the break in the third set and from that moment his state of mind raises thanks for the crowd etc etc..

I guess you watched the match Blake-Nadal in the US open, when in the fourth set Rafa gave up because every time Blake hit a winner the crowd seemed to have an orgasm and Nadal couldn't manage that atmosphere and in that fourth not even he was able to fight .

The crowd's influence is very important in the state of mind if you plays at home or your opponent is playing in front of his compatriots

By the way, i'm not a Ljubo's fan ..

One person ( not croat ) in MTF has complained about crowd's behaviour..

You , as a representative of Madrid's citizens : what have you to say about it ?

i want to say that of course in a crowd oh 10.000 people there's a part that maybe their behaviour isn't the best but overall i would say that we supported Rafa with passion, he nedded that and he won but he won cos he played better in the end, not for the crowd
all i can say that for me it was the best match LIVE in my life, i enjoyed like a child and i think everyone in Madrid Arena did ;)

Congrats to Rafa for his first title indoors, moreover an AMS in his home country :D This surprised me, i could not imagine that he would be able to win in Madrid so soon in his carreer, especially considering that he didn't do anything indoors in the past.

Ljubicic played awesome tennis, he was close to winning but was not able to finish this. This loss had nothing to do with a choke, he was never in a position to close the match. I hope he makes it to the TMC, he deserves that after the year he had so far.

Agree in first part of the sentence and disagree in the 2nd. He knew match was his when leading 2-0 in the 5th (Ljubicic blowing a lead up a break in the deciding set at indoors is not a common thing). He gifted that game to Nadal, committing 2 double faults and missing 2 easy fh volleys. Imo he started thinking he was about to win his first big title and meanwhile he got broken in a hurry, ie he choked at that moment.

That was a fantastic match, with a rather unpleasent result, though. :o

I really wanted Ivan to win. He played first class tennis for most of the match and you only got the idea Nadal was outplaying him after the rather dull service game Ivan threw away at 2-0 in the 5th. Up until then, it was either Ljubicic dominating full-time the court with his beautiful and clean shots and big serve, or Nadal pulling some incredible points and taking the most important ones in the 3rd and 4th sets.

At first, I wished Ljubicic would win this, but didn't really believe in him so much, mainly because I thought he'd be tired after these full three weeks, but apparently it didn't take much of its toll on him in the match and he had me believing he could actually pull off the upset when he won the 2nd set. But then... that horrible freaking point which gave Ivan 0-30 at Nadal's service game only served to fire up the crowd into full Davis Cup mode and make Nadal jump with motivation. Meh.

I saw that he was changing tactics in the beginning of the 3rd, but still Ivan was getting more points in those sets, except the really important ones. I just felt in the moment of that robbed point in Ivan's favor, that Nadal would comeback and win the match. Ljubicic did give some hopes when he began the 5th in great fashion, only to destroy and give away the break right back, then it was a lottery game, but you could clearly see that Nadal was getting it easier and controlling the match then.

Nadal won it by his own abilities (game, mental strength, fitness) and crowd support. I guess Ivan was tired and choked here or there at the end, but he really should've closed the deal sooner.

Congratulations to both! GREAT match! I hope Ljubicic wins Paris now! He deserves it!

Good point, you had a better view of the match since you were there. Still, i had the feeling that that Ljubicic game came as a result of the enormous pressure Nadal applied. That is, the failure was physical (ljubicic not being able to close it out) rather than mental (Ljubicic choked).

Ljubo started thinking after Nadal´s bh pass up the line went wide to go up 2-0 and he paid for that. Imo he choked at that game, nothing to do with being out of gas (his next service game was won with 4 service winners and he kept on serving up 220 km/h till final tb).

The crowd was great, they supported their player, and it's wrong to say they were not fair! (Maybe they were celebrating Ivan's mistakes, but that happens to every player facing the crowd's favorite!)

I think there is a thin line between passion and rudeness. But it's clear that celebrating Ljubicic double faults is just rudeness. Don't you think?
I really didn't hear much of that

i've watched the match last night on espn2, and i gotta say that the crowd was very rude. i really didnt appreciate those fans clapping every single time lubijic faulted....i know they are watching the home player, but still, there should be respect for the opponent....it felt like the time when rafael was againts grosjean in the semis in french open all over again....this is coming from a nadal fan...i love rafael....i thought he did an amazing job pulling through after being down 2 sets....amazing! that's just how i thought about the crowd...

I think we can safely stop saying rafa is only made for clay. Next up grass. :woohoo:

It was a great come back :worship: what a time to come back. I watched the match out nowhere rafa started playing the way his supposed to. Yes ivan was getting tired. Rafa was getting to a lot of balls and ivan was getting frustrated and going for too much.
I also think the crowd played a big part at first he (ivan) didn't mind it as he was winning & things were going his way, :scared: when the tide changed he noticed there jeers more and got put off a couple of times.
The crowd should know better it was rude and unfair to put him off because the match was fair, it felt a lot like f.o grosjean vs rafa only differecne is rafa didn't use it to aggravate ivan. Ivan was getting tired and began to doubt whether he could pull it out in 4 then 5 got a little too much for him. Credit due 2 Ivan, he didn't hand the match to rafa, it was not easy. I truly think it was a few points here and there as well as rafa picking up his level from zero to 100, rafa persisted with his game, the crowd on his side, madrid, spain and all. :yippee:  :rocker2:

:hatoff: to them both

 Shame it was not live i think the sports ppl got this one wrong by not showing the full match live teach them a lesson. I am one of the few mad fans. Instead they replayed it only 2 cut the match in half starting it in the middle of the third, after a break into the 4th set and then whole of the fifth. :shout: Couldn't get what had gone on, how the changed happend stupid move. :fiery: :fiery:
