I just saw the last few games on the scoreboard after I came home. And I was like "oh noooo, don't lose this service game now" when I saw a deuce on Kiwi's serve at 4-3 in the third set. On one hand, I also like Jürgen a lot, on the other one, I didn't want Kiwi to lose; so I was in a difficult situation...

Next opponent now is Davydenko, ouch... that could become difficult! Good thing for Kiwi before this match is that Davydenko's form level was downwards the last months since his great summer.

Kiwi has been struggling throughout the tournament and I think that he still hasn´t got over the final in Moscow, at least not completely. If he faces Davydenko, he has a good shot at making the semis. I´m more worried about Youzhny (if they should face each other). He has been playing really well and destroyed Saulnier 6-1, 6-1.

UPDATE 2-Davydenko and Youzhny upset in St Petersburg

ST PETERSBURG, Oct 28 (Reuters) - Russia's top two players Nikolay Davydenko and Mikhail Youzhny tumbled out in the St Petersburg Open quarter-finals on Friday.

Top seed Davydenko surrendered to fifth-seeded German Nicolas Kiefer 6-1 6-1 while defending champion Youzhny lost to unfancied Czech Robin Vik 1-6 6-4 6-2.

Youzhny, who has complained of a sore back throughout the week, led 6-1 4-1 when Vik started his comeback.

Vik reeled off five successive games to level the match before breaking the fourth-seeded Russian in the sixth game of the final set for a 4-2 lead with a clean backhand down the line.

The Czech secured a deserved victory two games later to advance to an ATP semi-final for the first time in his career.

"For sure, this is the best result of my life," said a beaming Vik, who had won only five matches on the ATP Tour this year before coming to St Petersburg and lost in the first round of his last four tournaments.

LUCKY VIK

Vik admitted, however, that he got lucky with Youzhny's injury.

"I think he was going on to win 6-1 6-2 before he hurt his back," he said.

"I got a little lucky, I was given a chance to get back into the match and I grabbed it."

Vik now takes on Kiefer, who dismantled Davydenko in 55 minutes.

The Russian world number eight was dumbfounded about his defeat.

"He started pressing me right from the start and I just couldn't do anything to combat his aggression. He simply gave me no chance today," said Davydenko.

Kiefer, who also reached the Kremlin Cup final earlier this month, said: "I started off well and I saw he was a little bit down on himself, so I tried to press him even more.

"I played very good tennis in Moscow and I was very disappointed to lose in the final there but today was a different story."

The German, who lost to Igor Andreev in the Moscow final, added: "It's never easy to play Russians in Russia.

"I'm just glad there are no more Russians left here."

Earlier, second seed Thomas Johansson also battled through to the last four with a 6-2 7-6 win over seventh seed Greg Rusedski.

After winning the first set in just 24 minutes, the Swede broke Rusedski in the 11th game of the second to take a 6-5 lead and serve for the match.

But the 32-year-old Briton, a semi-finalist here last year, saved a match point with a powerful forehand before breaking back to force the tiebreak.

Johansson would not be denied, however, saving three set points on his own serve before clinching victory at the second opportunity with a backhand cross-court after 86 minutes.

The former Australian Open champion, who won here in 1997, will face Spanish eighth seed Fernando Verdasco who defeated unseeded Dane Kenneth Carlsen 6-4 6-2.

And there were some other pics and details in my reports (and about that Vik too). Well, I don't know if that guy Robin Vik is very tired after his match against Youzhny but if he is not absolutely exhausted it will be the tough match for Kiefer against him because these days in SPb Nicolas also shows not his the best form although he wins... Anyway the next match promises to be very interesting.

Kiwi lost 4-6 2-6 :bigcry:

I didn't follow the score until the second set. But seems that he blew so many BP opportunities and struggling to hold his serves.

Although I am sad now, but I am accepting this lost much better than the last one in Moscow. Today, ToJo is better than Kiwi I suppose while in Moscow, Kiwi really blew the match

Hope he will cope with this lost alright and won't affect his confidence in the future.

Exactly! From what I saw Kiwi didn't take his chances. I saw once 0-40, and at least one more time 0-30. And there was a chance for Kiefer to break Johansson in almost every service game of the 2nd set because he had a lot of single break point opportunities as well  At least he tried until the end and worked for his chances, but couldn't convert them.

This final losing streak is a big handicap now  I would go as far as calling it a "jinx" to win his 7th career title. And next time please no more Grillotti on the chair, just jinxes it more ;)

Well, I've seen the match. Nicolas seemed quite tired... Yes, there was 0-40 and several times 0-30. But then - all the times - Kiwi couldn't get ToJo's serve although it was about 170-180 km/h... and Thomas somethimes did such aces 2-3 times in a row.

Kiwi made another huge jump in the rankings thanks to this week and reaching the final. He should come out as #23 in Entry Rankings tomorrow.

He was near #40 before Moscow, so this improvement is quite good and he at least made use out of the scenario that basically he could only gain points this autumn because he didn't play this stretch of the season last year.
