Guess A-Rod luck ran out tonight, congrats Ivo.
He did seem lacklustre throughout, and I hate him being 200 feet behind the baseline to return serve. It gives Ivo even more of an advantage in getting to net and picking off the volleys.

Seriously though, if Ivo can stay fit for the tourney, who can stop him, what with the altitude and the fact it is indoors?!!

Hrbaty shouldn't beat him as he is useless against serve and volleyers...Tojo was beaten at Queen's, Ljubo....tired? Also lost to him in Nottingham. Grosjean / Stepanek? Not so sure...maybe Sexy will win the title!! :haha:

I will admit it has been frustrating to be an Andy fan lately. His backhand is just getting wonky. I really do wish he would rehire Gilbert.

I do think that while we are talking about how players play too many tournaments, Andy could have really benefited from playing in something besides just Davis Cup between the USO and Madrid.

I think the bottom half of the draw is now really cleared out for Ljubicic to make the finals.

With Gilbert, Andy improved his backhand when it came to passing shots. I still think his main problem (not necessarily today) is his backhand during a normal rally, there's absolutely nothing on any of his shots. Plus he needs to learn to hit a flat forehand.

(not going to say it) Well, in fairness it was tough luck to draw opponent like Karlovic for your first match. Nevertheless, in this kind of tournaments you just can't expect to draw an easy opponent. (fighting the urge) This tournament could have been real points and confidence booster for Roddick, but now it just reinforces the idea that Andy still hasn't...arggh...found his... mojo. Fuck, there it is, I said it...

What's the point?

Well- granted- the draw is rather depleted and I'm sad for Andy but if you like more than just Andy as the people who were in the draw there is still a point. ;)

* Ljubicic is playing on fire now. You could get a chance to see indoor tennis played in fantastic form.
* Fernando Gonzalez is a fun player to watch when he is on- and he showed some awesome shots yesterday.
* You can see if Nadal can grow as an indoor court player.
* Will Ginepri continue his form from the summer? (He is not my favorite by any means whatsoever but he seems like a nice enough guy and I am still curious to see how he will continue to do.)
* Can Nalby quit being a headcase and actully win a big tournament?
* Can Ivo break his opponents serve and win 6-4, 6-3?

I know this isn't the best tournament of the year- but I tend to still to enjoy tournaments as a general rule because you usually can find good stories. I don't know- I like a good number of players so I don't tend to have all of my tournament interest based on the performance of one or two players. That does make it easier to keep wanting to follow tournaments because you never know where a great match will appear. :)

And Andy fans- look on the bright side. He won't have that many points to defend next year so if he gets his act together he could really clean up during the summer/fall 2006.

Hi baby, no one is freaking at Andy's forum and anyway his losses are becoming routine now :o

A lot of poeple don't like the yadda yadda yadda that goes on here when he loses because it creates 200 threads about the same subject that goes yadda yadda yadda forever.

That's three straight losses in ATP tournament play for Roddick. The last time that happened was in June of 2002 whne he lost 3 straight in WTC, RG, and Nottingham.

He also lost 4 straight later in 2002 with two of the losses being DC matches. Not good stuff from Andy.

I think Roddick is done in terms of more GS wins and major titles, shame like as he's a likeable guy and a good player, but other than the serve he doesn't seem to be able to compete with the return wizards, and also Karlovic has a bigger serve (although not faster), it's more reliable than Andy's.

Ivo has only played *11* matches this year, where a tiebreak has not been involved (he has played 35 matches all year).

Of those, when there wasn't a tie break he lost 9 out of the 11 (many of these matches came on clay).

This man is truly the king of Tie Breakers.

It is harsh to hit these players when they are down. (You need a good rep for this post... :) )

Andy's got a lot of talent. And to be honest, he has a great record... most players would do anything to have his record.

Yes, he hasn't lived up to expectations this year. But I personally think that there too high expectations for all of these guys. They're young, they have a lot of pressure on them. They don't need fans who don't have any idea of what they are going through dissing them all the time. Andy has a lot of pressure to be the saviour of tennis here in the States. Maybe with James and now Robby coming on strong it can take some of the pressure off of him, but the other Americans certainly aren't stepping up.

I hope Andy starts kicking butt again. It will be great for tennis. I would love to see some tight competition - Roger, Rafa, Andy, Lleyton, Marat. Right now doesn't look like its happening, but I can hope, and again, would be awesome for tennis.

Yet again. Everytime Federer, Hewitt and Safin withdraw, Andy seems to screw up:

AMS Miami: Hewitt withdraws; R1 loss
AMS Montreal: Fed, Hewitt, Safin withdraw; R1 loss
AMS Madrid: Fed, Hewitt, Safin withdraw; R1 loss

In Miami and Montreal, Nadal took advantage by reaching the final. Will he do it again?
I think, in the back of his head, Andy realises the situation and puts pressure on himself to win these major tournies.

It may not be the end yet. Who knows? Maybe Fed and Hewitt will withdraw from Paris too, to focus on Shanghai. I don't think Andy is so worried about Marat because he's the only one who can't deal with his serve.

Andy retired in his first round match in Miami due to injury, but yes, many of us in the Roddick forum have been discussing this bizarre phenomena of "No Roger+No Lleyton+No Marat=Golden Opportunity=Andy Squanders It" for several months now. Sometimes I wonder if it's a form of self-sabotage on his part.

As for it being "the end" for Andy I kinda think that's premature. He's only 23. He's in a slump and having a bad year. Every player goes through their peaks and valleys. He will recover. :)

Karlovic is tougher than people give him credit for. I hate watching him play, though. Serve volleyers are no fun to watch, esp. when they fault and they have already run up to the service line before they need to return to the base line for a second serve. Karlovic does that all the time, and I can't stand to watch it.

Hope Andy starts doing better. I know he needs a real shot of confidence right about now.
