Most feared player outside of the top 20?

Who is the most feared player outside of the top 20? Gilles Muller, Ivo Karlovic, and Tomas Berdych immediately come to my mind. What do you guys think?

I don't think Karlovic is feared, I just think most people dislike playing him. Muller hasn't done enough for him to be feared. I wanted to say Gonzo but he's number 19, so I'll say Henman just because he has a lot of respect from most of the top players.

Hard to say, since darkhorses are feared for different reasons. Karlovic is obviously a threat because of the intimidation of his serve, the frustrating service deadlock and the fact that you're going to have to be very disciplined on your own serve. Muller and Berdych are feared because of their unpredictable power game, the knowledge that if they get into a groove they're going to be slamming low-percentage winners past you all day and there's not much you can do about it. But then you also get people like Santoro or Mayer (OK, maybe just those two) who will feed you junk, disrupt your rhythm and make it hard for you to play your own game. So it's hard to reach a definitive conclusion.

It may be possible to look at this statistically and see which low-ranked upset merchant has the biggest number of scalps to his name. Muller is fast emerging as a strong candidate, considering his wins against Agassi last year and Nadal and Roddick in the Slams this year.

Wesley Moodie is a nightmare in grass and hard-courts. And I would also put on the list former top 10s like Moyá, Guga and Philippousis.

Mayer

If Mayer is one of the most feared men in tennis I think the game is in a very unhealthy position :(

Oh yeah, i forgot Santoro on my list. I think he is Safin's most feared player.

Would depend a lot on the surface - say an Ivo on grass, etc.

And on the player. Some players have the number of another player. So Mayer might not be feared by a lot of players, but as a Fernando Gonzalez fan, I pray that Fernando never gets him because he has Fernando's number every time they play (Miami 2005 and French Open 2004).

And what about Ollie Rochus... He will be top-20 soon, but I think most top players don't really like playing him... ;)

Yep. Who wants to play Ivo on grass? On clay no problem. Same with Rusedski. I wouldn't want to play Blake on hardcourts. Berdych, Verdasco, and Muller can blow people away at any given time. Hrbaty is an experienced veteran who can give a lot of guys problems. A lot of talent out there past the top 20.

Former number 1s (Guga et al) are always a threat. Hrbaty is a known Top 5 slayer (he has downed Sampras, Agassi, Roddick, Hewitt, Federer, Safin, at one point or another). As for Santoro -- to paraphrase Marat: telling me I will go up against Santoro is like telling me I am up for execution tomorrow. Receiving serve from Karlovic is like looking up a tree trunk. Nandy Verdasco's forehand is a killer. Mueller, Matthieu, Berdych are among the "new balls" as far as Top 5/10 slayers are concerned.

Rommella - I was just coming back to say Verdasco. He's ranked way to low for his talent. So I can imagine that top 20 players aren't really thrilled when they see they have to play him. He's inconsistent, but if he's on, he's dangerous.

Wesley Moodie is a nightmare in grass and hard-courts.

I have to disagree about Moodie. Ferrer downed him 6-2, 6-1 in 1st Round Cincy (Wes was a qualifier there) and we all know David prefers playing on clay.

I'll throw Andreev in the mix. Scored the last win over Nadal on clay at Valencia in April, 3 titles this year, pulls out matches he probably shouldn't.

OK, maybe I exagerated things about Moodie a bit. As for Andreev, he will probably in the top 20 sooner than we all expect.

I'll go with James Blake. It can't be fun playing a guy that you know can end the point instantly with a forehand, not named Federer. This statement may not be valid much longer, because hopefully after Lyon, James will be in the top 20.

James Blake has to be seen as a potential giant killer, what with his third round win over Rafa Nadal and his great run recently.

*Cough*Andy Murray*Cough* Well, not feared, but I can imagine some players being a bit cautious towards him after seeing him improve so much over the past few months.

Henman still deserves respect.

Busy watching Verdasco / Gonzalez and Verdasco is nothing to marble at, judging from this match and in all fairness, this is my first time seeing him ... but just seeing some of the untimely errors and his play, he is obviously suited for clay and could maybe work on his mental a tad also. Don't know why he would pose much of a threat to anyone in the Top 20, but maybe he'll convince otherwise.

I know for the past 6 years that Grosjean has been in the top 20, but this year he has slippes and I think that he is an effective player, and he has the skill for a little guy.

If you saw him one of the three times or so per year that he's actually on, you would be singing a different tune.

Grosjean, he can be a real thorn in the side to some and is under ranked, definitely top 10 material, and a bad draw for any seed who gets him first round.
