Grrrrr...
I wonder if he can remain in the top 10 after missing out on all these tournaments he's supposed to defend.

Who's next in line for the Masters in Shangai?

Besides Marat, only Roger, Rafa, and Andy have been officially announced as having qualified.... I guess if he decides he can't play in Shanghai, the spot would go to the 8th person in the race, whoever that ends up being after Paris :)

Ok, I'm hoping that this means, he's trying to be as fit and ready as possible for Paris and Shanghai.

I can dream, can't I?

I saw Dinara on Russian TV today and she said that it was higly unlikely that Marat will play this season.

Don't know if you can rely on that, but it does not sound promising :(

I really really hope that Marat would be able to play at Shanghai. Because the Masters cup will be less exciting without him.

I may be wrong Debs, but I remember a "scandal" a couple of years ago over reserve places and the ITF named a grand slam finalist as a reserve that isn't in the top 8 but in the top 20. In which case the reserve place would surely go to Puerta as Hewitt was runner-up in the first GS of the season

Huh? Grand Slam winners that stay in the Top 20 by the end of the year are given one of the 8 spots. That's not a scandal, it was part of the 'rules' set up for the Masters Cup as far as I know. The confusion probably came from part time 'tennis journalists' who didn't understand the rules. Puerta wants to go to Shanghai, he needs to be #8 in the race by the end of the year (maybe #9), end of story.
