Next monday start the TMS Madrid and this is what David has been saying about it:

http://www.elcomercioperu.com.pe/EdicionOnline/Html/2005-10-15/onlDeportes0386478.html

"tratar de ganar el torneo". "Para eso estamos acá. Más ahora que estoy peleando el Masters".
"I'll try to win the tournament, That's why we're here. Even more now that I'm fighting to get into the Masters"

"Guillermo ya casi está adentro y yo tengo que jugar bien los dos Masters Series que faltan (Madrid y París). Todavía tengo chances (de llegar a Shanghai). Tengo que jugar bien la semana que viene y ahí veré. Creo que puedo"
"Guillermos is almost in and I have to play well the two Master Series which are left (Madrid and Paris). I still have chances (to get to Shanghai). I have to play well all week and then I'll see. I think I can make it"

"Estoy jugando bien, aunque tal vez me falte un poco de ritmo. La semana pasada no entrené porque me dolía un poco la espalda. La semana que viene voy a andar muy bien".
"I'm playing well, although I still lack a bit of rythm. Last week I didn't train because my back hurt a little. Next week I'm gonna do really well"

it's great to see him soo motivated to get to the masters and good to see he believes in himself and at the same time admits he's not 100% (lacking rythm)
I wish him the best in Madrid and the rest of the season...hope to see him in the masters that would be great for him and a good begining to the next season :)
Vamos David :yeah:

Nalbo is the Number 5 seed and has a bye into R2 where he would face either Melzer or Spadea.

sigmagirl91

I hope he gets Spadea. Didn't he play Spadea at some point in this tournament last year, or am I thinking of another one?

He has a very good record against Spadea, something like 3-0?
Melzer's a flashy player, but I'd also expect Nalbo to win that one.
If he were to win his first match, he'd probably play Tojo in a rematch of their Wimby QF match. Then probably A-Rod in the quarters.
If he's fully focused, determined and motivated anything's possible.............

Yes...anything. I don't think Nalby and Melzer have played each on the senior circuit. Wasn't Melzer the guy he defaulted against in the Wimbledon junior semis back in '99?

well sigma I agree with kyla...I don't know if you've seen the matches he played, he really played well, even against JCF, he served well, finished the points in a good way, I can say I enjoyed his vienna matches more than his USO ones
but as we always say it's a problem in his mind and in playing and finishing the big points...and here's the weakness, he has to be solid when he has big opportunities...

wish him the best im Madrid :)

I agree 100%.
Maybe I was a bit harsh the other night on my thoughts on the JCF. He's in decent form, but sometimes he needs to be a bit more ruthless on the big points.
Perhaps sometimes we expect too much from Nalbo, but that's because we all know the potential he has.
Anyway I'll stop all my waffling and best wishes in Madrid Nalbo.

But I do not think so.
Depends on how well David will play in Madrid
You know ,actually ,now we could not expect too much from him
Hopefully he could really do his best, play a very high level of himself :wavey: .
So far I think he have little chance to go to shanghai
So what we could expect is his wonderful performance!

It's not over yet. David's best five result is only 25 points. He can gain that many points reaching the quarters or better. Besides, in Vienna, he equaled his result of last year. Not that it's something to be proud of, but he didn't lose anything.

I just checked the OOP: David is already playing tomorrow! Somehow I expected a Wednesday match... His opponent will be Juergen Melzer who had some trouble dispatching Spadea so I hope Nalby will win this without too much trouble!

I'm serious when I say this: that was probably the first match I've ever watched Nalbo play where he didin't lose serve throughout the match. He didin't even face a BP.
Johansson was nowhere near the level he played at Wimby this year, he didin't serve as well and made too many errors.
Nalbo played well and went up that extra gear when he needed to.
Keep up the good work Nalbo!!!

The part you bolded: That stat almost made me fall out of my chair. David was so on today, that his match ended well before I get to "hell". Usually, he makes a match harder than it has to be.

To be honest, if this is his current level, then Hrbaty or Karlovic needs to watch out!!!

I didn't get to watch the match til last night, and actually held off getting the score before. Nalbandian played well, and how nice to see him serving well by his standards. I always get worried when there's a line call he disagrees with (and this time without a question, rightfully so), but he stayed calm this time, and didn't let it get to him like these sometimes do. Hope to come home to another good match like this tonight.

PRESS CONFERENCE OF DAVID NALBANDIAN

Saturday, 22nd of October, 2005
Q. How would you analyze this match?
I think the match was a good one. We both played, as far as I am feeling, well. We both played well. We both had chances in playing a third set. He had an incredible point, he broke my serve, he held his serve. I think it was a great match.

Q. Do you think he played better? Are you happy with your own play?
Well, I haven't seen stats or anything, but I didn't feel uncomfortable at all. I think I played well. I think the match was quite good. I ended it with a lot of confidence. Some points showed that.

Q. Where did it show, because he had peaks?
My breakpoint in the third set was a key one. There were a few other points that, in difficult situations, he recovered really well.

Q. You said your goal for this year was to be in the top three. Do you think it's been a good year for you?
There are positives and negative aspects, as with everything. I would have liked to have had a position in the Masters, a guaranteed position, without having to fight for it right now. I went through many circumstances. Every situation is different.

Q. So you think you're out of the Masters?
No, not yet. I've going two tournaments still. I have mathematical chances to get in. I'm playing well. I can win next week in Paris. Things would change.

Q. Would you be an alternate if you went to Shanghai?
I'll have to think about it.

Q. You had better skill from the baseline, more control in the longer rallies. That seemed to be why you won the second set. Why did it change in the third set?
Well, I take my chance in the first set. I get a breakpoint, and he play an incredible forehand down the line on the corner. I mean, nothing to do. He played a little bit better at that moments.
Then when I was serving, he break me. He play very good that point. I do an easy mistake in 30 40. I think the match always was close and was tough for both.

Q. You played him here last year, I think. Was this a similar match or was it different?
No, it was different: I won.

Q. How was it different in the way the match went?
He played much better this year than the last one. He's winning so much matches with confidence. He's playing good.

Q. Do you still feel confident about reaching the Masters Cup in Shanghai?
Yeah, with two tournaments remaining, I think I'm playing good. So let's try the best.

Q. Is that your one remaining goal for this year?
Yeah, yeah.

Q. For the Argentine Federation, there's been an electoral process. What is your opinion?
I didn't know there was an election process actually. But I think players do not vote.

Q. But they're important in the issue.
We'll see.

Q. What is your opinion about the final tomorrow, Nadal/Ljubicic?
It's going to be a tough match. They're both great players. Ljubicic has been winning a lot of matches. Rafa has nothing to envy. It will be a wonderful match.

Having just watched the highlights of the match, Nalbo played well but Ivan was the better player and deserved to win.
That's how Indoor tennis goes, only a few points can decide a match especially when you're playing a monster serve. Nalbo was 1/11 on BP and Ivan 2/5.
Nice to read he's still positive and good luck in Basel next week.

I only got to see the last few games of the last set, and I like what I saw, eventhough he lost. I hope he's not too tired for Basel, cause he can do great things there :)

Yep, I almost watched the whole though it's only the repeat. David played great. But Ivan played better at big points, his serving works very well at crucial moments like BP, that's the reason why David has so many BPs but broke Ivan only once. Ivan almost saved all the BPs by his aces. It's really frustrated when you work so hard and play many amazing shots to get the opportunity, but suddenly lose it by opponent's one simple shot. And also Ivan's returning is good, which helps him to get the important breaking in 3rd set.

If David can keep the level as Madrid, I am sure he will do a good job in Basel. Now Nadal has high possibility to withdraw Basel, so not many top players in this tourney, surely it's a good chance.

BTW, Jazz, check you PM. :)

I just want to know the possibilities of David to go in the Masters...

Everybody is always talking about this, but nobody knows really how the puntuation is, how many point David needs to in and the ranking we must look (entry system or the other) to go to Shangai...
If someone would like to aswer, thanks a lot!

At the moment Nalbo is 12th and has 322 points. Ljubicic and Safin are joint 8th on 346.
Davydenko who's in 7th(the last automatic place) is on 393 points.
There's 50 points on offer to win Basel.
Nalbo needs a good week in Basel to stay in touch for a Masters place, but it won't be decided until Paris.
Basically Nalbo needs to continue his good form and go deep in Basel and Paris, and hope Davydenko goes out early in Paris.

It's still a long shot, but it would be great to see Nalbo play a Masters Cup again; I've got good memories of him in Houston 2 years ago.
Hope that helps. :) :wavey:

I feel like he left some unfinished business at the Masters Cup. I still remember that match against Agassi...

It would be great for him if he were to win Basel and go deep in Paris (remember: he hasn't played Paris in three years, so he has nothing to lose there). And...he may have a shot of getting in anyway, should Federer and/or Safin end up not playing.

That's why doing well in Basel this week is so important for Nalbo.
If he makes the Final he'll be in 8th (the alternate spot) unless Puerta does some real damage in Lyon.
That way he would get a place if any of the guys above him can't make Shanghai through injury.

But honestly if Nalbo was more consistent this year in TMS events especially, he would probably have a place in Shanghai by now. With his game and talents, a Top 8 placing should be the least of his worries.

I agree. What happened earlier in the year was terribly unfortunate. If he doesn't make it to Shanghai, many will point to those results as the possible reason why.

He lost 1st round in Hamburg and Rome.
2nd round in Miami (he had his virus with his liver that time I think  ) so that was understandable.
2nd round in Montreal and Cincy.

I don't wish to sound negative, but Nalbo needed to get big points in more of these tourneys. This is why he's 12th in the race, and it's frustrating because he should be higher.

Yeah...
the early losses in IW and Miami are directly attributable to the virus, which is unfortunate; the ones in Hamburg and Rome were due to the aftereffects of said virus; and I don't know what the hell we can say about Montreal or Cincy (disinterest maybe?).

Sorry Sigma, I don't buy that. Remember he won Munich before Rome and Hamburg and he must have been confident after winning only his 3rd career title.

It's all in the past now..........
I hope Nalbo has a great week in Basel, he's always played well there in the past and needs a strong run there to keep his Shanghai hopes alive.

Yeah...I remember Munich, but you know...everything is strictly conjecture at this point. And it's all in the past now...all missed opportunities-especially since he had soooooo much to gain in those tournaments. Here's hoping that this late-season run will produce a trip to Shanghai anyhow.

I'm sorry that David couldn't beat Ivan in the SF but he did well enough to get so far and almost defend his points!

At least I got to see a little of his QF match [well, last game] vs. Karlovic w all the Argie fans for him! ;)

I only got to "see" the first three games of the match. The rest of the time was spent leaving work, getting on the road, and meeting my friend. All of this, and by the time all of this was done, the match was history.
