This is only Blake's second ever semifinal outside the US, and the first came all the way back in 2001 when he lost in the Tokyo semis to Hewitt. He's made just two other quarterfinals outside America as well, Rome and Vienna in 2002. This isn't surprising for someone who's professed his dislike of the indoor season after the US Open, but he may have turned a corner this week. This result is no surprise, he'd have to be badly off to lose to Martin on anything other than clay, but the fightback against Rochus yesterday would probably not have occurred a couple of years ago.

Congrats James! Hopefully this represents a new path for him: to win at least the matches he should, and show some consistency. Good luck against Ollie, it should be a tough match, Rochus is in good form.

Oli defeated Blake 3 weeks ago in the davis cup tie between Belgium and the USA in three sets: 6-4, 7-5, 6-1 :)
It's not on gravel this time, but he won the $125k-challenger in Mons. Looks like he is on a roll :)

James addressed some of his difficulties with this fall indoor season...
-------------------------
while Blake routed Martin 6-1, 6-2. Blake will face Ruchus on Saturday.

``Alberto is a great player, but he had a bad day,'' Blake said. ``I'd like to think that was partly because of me. I was putting pressure on him the whole time. I served very well, and once you get rolling with one part of your game the rest of it follows, so it's a good feeling.''

The sixth-seeded Blake is playing in his first tournament since his run to the U.S. Open quarterfinals in September, where he lost to Andre Agassi.

Blake won his second career title in August at New Haven and played in Belgium two weeks ago in the Davis Cup playoff.

``I've come over a few times and not had much success, which is frustrating,'' Blake said. ``I like playing indoors. I feel really good here even though it's not the same kind of crowds as I have on my side in the United States.''

===============================
from the ATP Site:

Blake: "Alberto's a great player but had a bad day. I'd like to think that was partly because of me, I was putting pressure on him the whole time. I served very well, and once you get rolling with one part of your game the rest of it follows so it's a good feeling."

On reaching his first career semifinal in Europe: "I've come over here a few times and not had much success which is frustrating. I like playing indoors. Thanks to a new perspective and being happy to play wherever I am, I am happy to be on the court. I think that's helping me now. I feel really good here even though it's not the same kind of crowds as I have on my side in the US, I think I still have a few fans out here."

On either Bjorkman or Rochus next: "I think the crowd would prefer Bjorkman, he's the hometown favourite, and puts on a great show as he did yesterday. I've done well against him. Olivier and I had a great match in the Davis Cup on clay a few weeks ago. It would be nice to have a rematch against him on indoor hard. Both are good players and good guys and I'll see if I can step my game up again tomorrow."

I like him too ;)

What's most impressive is that he is actually playing and living with this new perspective and outlook on life and his career. So many people go through bad times and say it changed them and they're different now but they're just the same as before. But James is really living and playing like he's a different person and it's just so impressive.

Ollie vs. Balke should be a really goo match. Ollie packs quite a punch on the groundstrokes for such a small guy, espeically taking that BH so early lately.

Nope, unfortunately only players in Vienna were eligible... it's an ISG event and Stockholm is not. The last SE was cleared and that is how Spadea got in :rolleyes:
