Andre Agassi today informed tournament organisers that he would not play in this years AMS Madrid due to an injury in his lower back. Roger Federer has also pulled out after injuring his hamstring in training. What a shame. Hopefully Andre will be fit for AMS Paris.

He actually injured it in the fourth set of the match against Federer. May have cost him the title, leading 4-2, 1 set all. It forced Andre to pull out of Stockholm and Madrid. He's aiming now for Paris and Shanghai.

Just had news in that Andre is NOT INJURED! He is just reducing his Autumn Schedule. He has decided to go to Paris as it has been a long time since he played there in 2002, losing in QF to Moya. A good result there will qualify him for Shanghai. My sources say he is very excited about these final two tournaments of the year.

Federer foot problems to keep him off court

World number one Roger Federer has been forced to pull out next week's Masters Series Madrid after injuring himself during training on Wednesday.
Basel, Switzerland - World number 1 Roger Federer injured a ligament in his right foot during training and will miss at least two weeks of tournaments, officials confirmed Wednesday.

Organisers at the Madrid Masters starting Monday confirmed that the top seed would not take part. Federer joins Andre Agassi (reducing his autumn schedule) and Marat Safin healing a knee problem) in missing the prestige indoor tournament.

"I received a call tonight from Roger Federer informing that he was hurt in training while he tried to hit a forehand drive shot," said Madrid tournament director Manolo Santana.

"He said he will consult with doctors tomorrow for a more detailed diagnosis; he is walking with crutches.

"We had great expectations of Roger playing here in Madrid, but injuries are something we cannot control. I know that Roger feels very badly so that it really had desire to play here."

The mishap will keep the winner of 11 events this season out of action for up to three weeks.

He will also miss his home event, the Swiss Indoors in Basel. Doctors have prescribed icing and physiotherapy for the 24-year-old, who is assured of the world number 1 ranking at the end of the season.

Medical opinion is optimistic that Federer will be fit for the season-ending Masters Cup in Shanghai from November 13-20.

Federer gave his regrets to Swiss tournament organisers who have had bad luck with the player's appearances over the years at a tournament which he is especially keen to win.

News reports quoted a disappointed Federer lamenting his fate. "After bad luck last year with my thigh and now this. I'm extremely disappointed, above all that I can't play at home for the second straight year in Basel.

"But I'm hoping to go to Shanghai again perfectly fit."

Federer also seems likely to miss the last event of the ATP regular season, the Masters at Paris Bercy the first week of November.

Meanwhile in Madrid, Rafael Nadal will take his time in acclimating to conditions as he arrives before the weekend.

The world number 2 from Mallorca is due in the capital in early afternoon where he will now be top seed. Officials said Nadal is due for a first training session at the Rockodromo site on Friday evening.

Chile's Olympic gold medallist Nicolas Massu has been voted a free entry into the main draw by Spanish newspaper readers.

The initiative sponsored by the tournament, pitted the South American in a ballot with rivals Alberto Martin of Spain, American James Blake and Gael Monfils of France.
