Melzer defeats Gaudio 6:7, 6:3, 7:6

I thought he had this wrapped up, but..................... Gaudio is so talented, but when things go bad for him, sometimes, he just gives up. I just don't understand that thinking from him.

He never has things wrapped up until he wins the final point. Someone pointed out that he has been bagelled 19 times in the past 5 years? He has also lost 6 games in a row at various points in sets anyway...just look at the Ferrer match at the French.

I can't believe Gaudio lost this match. He had it in the third set and just, I don't know. He actually served for the match. Maybe he just lost concentration?

My point exactly. I just don't understand what goes through his mind sometimes. He is very talented, but.............

I can't believe Gaudio lost this match.

Koubek took the words "amazement" and "flabbergasted" to a whole new level last night that even Gaudio is not capable of

Gaudio lost the concentration when he was serving to win the match with 30-30 and Gaston hit a backhand winner but according to the umpire the ball was out and Gaudio protested a lot and after Melzer broke ,Gaston lost his temper destroying a racket ( poor racket ) etc...

Gaudio made his usual show :o

Yes, I think Gaudio was cheated on that very important point which decided about break point Melzer or match point Gaudio. During Melzer's interview on TV, if you "read" between the lines, I think Jürgen himself admitted that also. I don't know how to call it in English, but in German we have a term for that kind of decisions: Konzessionsentscheidung. They are made when an umpire retrospectively has the feeling that s/he made a wrong decision against player A and then "tries" to balance out that mistake by making a controversial/wrong call against player B.

And maybe this happened in this case. Having no detailled replay it's hard to judge if the balls was in or out, but it looked more "in" than out for me also. And it came by the same line judge that made a few games before a very close -and probably also wrong- decision against Melzer.

I was watching the match and saw that. I think he just made number one in the Best Racquet Throw of 2005 contest.

The Austrian commentator was saying: "You really need lots of rage to abuse a racket to look like that"

Sure, if I had been in his position at that moment, getting this call at that moment, I'm sure I would have also destroyed my racket :)
I don't critisize him for that reaction at all.

We would call that a "make-up" call, but I think I'm going to be using your term from now on. :)

That word just rolls off the tongue doesn't it?

My heavy American tongue could never say it. I'll stick to make up call.

How did the crowd behave in that match? At least last year the fans in Vienna were a bit unfair in Melzer's matches. It looked almost like DC atmosphere to me. Especially when the umpire made a tough call for Melzer, the crowd punished Melzer's opponent for that.

I found them pretty well behaved but don't forget I'm from the States and used to US Open crowds. The only difference between them and US hockey fans is that unlike US hockey fans they don't brawl in the stands.

When the controversial call for Melzer was made at the beginning of the third set, they probably thought Gaudio was gifted undeservedly and clapped a few first serve faults for two or three points or when they wanted Melzer to break at break point. And they booed and whistled when Gaudio had his tantrum and destroyed his racket (pretty normal, happens almost everywhere). These are the only unfair things I would mention, the rest was pretty fair home support for Jürgen.

Gaudio has a lot of talent, but his mind is very weak.

dude, that's Gaudio trademark!!

like it or not, he always lost his temper, insulting himself. he always thinks negative while playing...

 but true. I can see what you mean perfectly. On a more personal note, my son plays tennis competitively and the part in bold fits him perfectly. Sometimes, he just goes into a coma. A pity.

if Melzer had any confidence he would have won easy in 2
and he tried his best to choke as well and Gaudio helped him

Gastòn is an artist. Look at what he's able to do with a racket! Such a piece of art. :worship: As every artist, he has his moments and his moods. Gotta love him the way he is or find somebody else to worship. :)

I would have loved to have seen this match, a match between two of the most flashy shotmakers in the game, but they are both super-erratic. The fact that Gaudio hasn't won a match for 2 months is fucking depressing...

How is it depressing? Lost 1st round at the US Open and this was his 1st tournament since then, look at it like that. If he lost 1st round in every event from them, it is still not depressing.

Try being a Lisnard or Mezler fan...one of them is continue his rotten run of results today :tape:

Yes, butGaudio is much more talented than those two which makes his results so frustrating.

Gaudio lacks strategy, confidence and a variety in pace esp. backhand. JonnyC21, I wouldn't classify Gaudio as a shotmaker, he's more a grinder, although these days he's not grinding well at all; bails out of points way too quickly.
