Jo-Wilfried Tsonga! Alias "Jo Jo" (the Manceau deserves his own thread!)

He can't share a thread with Gaël anymore. He deserves his own thread IMO. So i start one for him.
Could you please change the title of the other one Marine? ;)

He won his first round match in the France F17 Future in Saint-Dizier:
Jo-Wilfried TSONGA FRA 252 (2) bat Antoine TASSART FRA (Q) 6-3/6-3

Next: Max RADITSCHNIGG AUT 530 who beat Romain JOUAN FRA 1511 (WC) 4-6/7-6(4)/6-3

10-12-2005, 04:31 PM
I repost some things i had posted in his former thread about him...

An interview of Jo Tsonga from Tennis Mag' in the "Comment ça va?" = "How are you doing?" section (Gosh! I've scanned so much things...): (

Maybe we should make separate threads for Jo Jo and Gaël?

It was something going in my head since a long time... :p

10-12-2005, 04:33 PM

Does Tsonga has some fans to take care of this thread? :o

10-22-2005, 06:46 PM
Does anybody knows if Tsonga's got another injury ? It would be a black year for him in this assumption...

02-06-2006, 09:01 AM
loooooooooooooool it's ages since any1 posted in Joey's thread :awww:
but great news!!!!!
Jo is back in action in the Bergamo Challenger
he played quallies (def. Midelkoop, Giorgini and Tkalec) and is now in the MD and faces Jerome Haehnel
It is quite a tough draw but it's a good start. I'm really excited to see that he's finally back. No more injuries this time  that's what I hope :)

02-06-2006, 11:57 AM

02-06-2006, 04:12 PM
Hello :wavey: I'm a Jo Willy fan since he won the USO juniors. Let's hope this means a rebirth for him. Happy to hear he's palying again. :D

02-06-2006, 04:14 PM
I hope it'll be his rebirth. I like him since the fall of 2004 and I was quite sad to see him injured for so long :awww:
Allez Jo :bigclap: !!!!

02-07-2006, 03:03 PM
Jo Willy lost :( Does anyone know what he plays next? Will he get a wc for the Open 13?? :(

02-08-2006, 07:55 AM
yeah the score was 6-7 (7) 0-6
seems like he was too disappointed by the loss of the 1st set which seems to have been very close :awww:
I dunno if he'll get a WC for the Open 13 as he's not been a WC boy in general....and I don't think he will get it :awww:
But I hope he'll play some more challengers so he can win some matches and get his ranking up. Allez :woohoo: !

02-08-2006, 08:10 AM

02-19-2006, 01:12 PM
Yeah he played the Open 13 quallies but lost to Haehnel. However, this week he tries to qualify for the Besancon challenger. He is already in the 2nd round of the quallies where he meets Jan Mertl of the Czech Republic. Allez Jo :woohoo: !

02-20-2006, 12:53 AM

02-20-2006, 09:53 AM

He beat Mertl 6-3 6-2 and will play Massimo Dell'Acqua for a place in the MD. Bonne chance

Btw....what does Manceau mean   ?

02-24-2006, 12:37 PM

03-06-2006, 06:38 AM

He lost in the final in 3 sets ... but still a great run, hopefully he can keep going from here

04-29-2006, 08:19 PM
Who did he lose to?

04-29-2006, 09:31 PM
Filip Prpic of Sweden, who Jo had already beaten earlier this year in the final of a Futures tournament in England... so Prpic got his revenge :(

04-30-2006, 01:05 AM
He'll do better next time. Prpic had a good day today.

04-30-2006, 05:32 AM

oh well, semis is still good. where does he play next?

05-01-2006, 11:35 AM

05-25-2006, 09:31 AM
Is Jo playing RG?
I haven't seen him in the draws?!

05-25-2006, 01:31 PM
no, he decided not to play RG and instead focus on Wimbledon (his better surface)

05-25-2006, 03:25 PM
Alright! weird decision for a French
Thanx for the info Emilita ;)

05-26-2006, 04:28 AM
yeah it was a bit weird but apparently it's only for this year he will play RG again

10-01-2006, 07:01 PM
Jo is back...He's playing qualifiactions at the Moselle Open

And his new website also ;)

Joey is doing great this week  he is in the quarters of the Rennes challenger after defeating Carraz and Torsten Popp :woohoo:
Allez allez!

10-15-2006, 03:25 PM
Now that was a well-deserved WC! :yeah:
He did it, he won a naile-biting final against Summerer with a great comeback after a poor start (1-6 7-5 7-5). It was an awesome fight, Jo!

10-15-2006, 05:01 PM
Well done JO!! Hope that he'll get a WC for Bercy qualies :yeah:

10-16-2006, 09:36 AM
great result for him! bravo JoJo!!

10-17-2006, 09:18 AM
:clap2: Great week for him! Congrats!

10-23-2006, 03:15 AM
Hey, Tsonga seems to be making a comeback. He's gotten to the Futures of 1 tournament last month and won Rennes this month. Was he injured previously? Anyone know his situation?

10-23-2006, 04:20 AM
yes he has had a lot of injury problems, but he is gradually coming back

Tennis Fool
10-23-2006, 04:22 AM
I wouldn't even say gradually. He's really shot up the rankings in the past 3 weeks. Otherwise I wouldn't have noticed ;)

10-28-2006, 01:57 PM
Bercy Qualies 1st Round:

WC J.Tsonga def. [9] S.Koubek 7-6(5), 7-6(4) :D

Next up: Jo Jo will play [5]Daniele Bracciali for a spot in MD!

10-28-2006, 02:58 PM
I wouldn't even say gradually. He's really shot up the rankings in the past 3 weeks. Otherwise I wouldn't have noticed ;)

well yes in the last 3 weeks he's done particularly well...but he hasn't just started making a comeback in the last 3 has been gradual. great to see he has a shot at making the main draw in bercy. when was the last time he was there? was like 2003 or 2004 wasn't it? can't remember..

10-28-2006, 04:28 PM
Good win over Koubek! :yeah:

Tennis Fool
11-07-2006, 03:41 AM
How far did he go in qualies?

12-30-2006, 11:48 AM
YAY! Jo-Wilfried got a wildcard for the main draw at the Oz Open :woohoo: :bounce: :bounce: !!!!! Allez!

01-03-2007, 03:40 PM
GL Jo for the main draw :woohoo:

01-12-2007, 09:56 AM
Australian Open 1st Round:

 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga FRA (WC) vs. Andy Roddick USA (6)

Allez Jo Jo!! :bounce:

01-12-2007, 11:59 AM
Why does he always get Roddick 1st round in Grand Slams?? :fiery:

01-12-2007, 12:56 PM
Allez JoJo

01-15-2007, 05:59 PM
Very nice match a gainst Roddick despite the logic loss! Very solid. :yeah:

To bad he completely collapsed after leading 5-2 in the second set though...

He's really getting back to his normal level of play and of confidence it seems! Little by litle he'll get back on track and let's hope this horrible serie of bad injuries is definitely over for him... ;)

01-15-2007, 06:47 PM
From GM :

Tsonga won 20:18 first set tie-break against Roddick and this is 6th tie-break in singles with 38 points! Record equalling!

Fragmentary process: 5:3 Roddick, 6:5 Tsonga, 7:6 Roddick, 8:7 Tsonga, 9:8 Tsonga (serve), 10:9 Tsonga, 11:10 Roddick, 12:11 Tsonga, 13:12 Roddick, 14:13 Tsonga, 15:14 Roddick, 16:15 Tsonga, 17:16 Tsonga (serve), 18:17 Tsonga and finally at 19:18 Tsonga won its tenth set point (Roddick had five sp's)

I'd also like to say that, if this guy Tsonga stays healthy, there's no reason he can't break the top 100 this year. I mean 30 outright winners in the first set alone . He was on fire.

01-16-2007, 05:38 PM
I watched the 1st set TB... It was so amazing. Great stuff. :yeah:

For that moment, he didn't seem to have the French mental problem like others

01-19-2007, 03:21 AM
Here's a post-math video interview from Eurosport : ;)

01-25-2007, 08:49 PM
Does anyone know when's Tsonga's next tourney???

01-26-2007, 02:42 AM
3 pics I took of JoJo during a practice session at the AO..

01-27-2007, 02:08 AM
Thx Emilita, nice jojo pics :) Was he training with monfils??

de rien Anne-Claire! yes, he was training with Monfils

02-04-2007, 11:22 AM
Jo pulled out of Bergamo, but I read on his website it's nothing serious, just a little pain in the back, he's taking a few days off to be sure it won't bother him for his next matches (he's playing the qualies of Marseille).

02-11-2007, 10:56 PM

News on the Jo's website withe news pictures also...

02-11-2007, 11:57 PM
hahaha great pic, merci :)

02-17-2007, 07:01 PM
He's back! :bounce:

He's got a really nice game. I could see that at Bercy a few years ago but still...

Hopefully, no more injury and he's back on track! :yeah:

Gilles Muller next, isn't it?

02-23-2007, 05:01 PM
Lost to Gilles Muller 6-4, 7-5 today. I could only follow the 1st set in which he was really playing :retard: but i bet it was the same in the 2nd.

Nice short run considering he was coming back from injury (again...).

02-25-2007, 01:15 AM

good luck to him in Cherbourg!

03-01-2007, 03:18 PM
Disappointing loss of Jo today against Cakl, I thought he had a good draw after his first round win over Cilic...
He lost 6-4 3-6 5-7. Cakl was leading all the time in the 3rd set, rebreak for Jo just in time at 4-5 and he lost his serve immediately after that.

Here's an interview of him before the match:
He seemed pretty confident for today's match... No comment. The good thing is he is not injured, for a change ("je ne ressens aucun bobo particulier").

03-01-2007, 05:00 PM
JO  dommage....

03-15-2007, 05:29 AM
He is playing Sarajevo this week. And he is now in round 2 :)

R1: def. Sasa Tuksar 6-4 6-1
R2: vs Kenneth Carlsen

03-16-2007, 04:10 AM
Oh well, he lost to Carlsen 6-3 5-7 3-6

03-19-2007, 11:44 AM
He is playing a Future this week (Poitiers).
Not very exciting, but his website says he needs a few wins in a row to get his confidence back.
So pull a Gael and win the whole thing, Jo! :p

He has a great draw, everybody seems to be in the other half of the draw:

03-26-2007, 12:01 PM
Done, he won his Future in Poitiers (without losing a set  ):
He will now play in Talahassee (USA) and Mexico City. He says his goal is to be in the top 100 by the end of the year. He barely has any points to defend anymore for the rest of the season, so it's doable. He played great in Poitiers, his serve was working very well (17 aces in his semi-final against Ouanna).

04-07-2007, 08:09 AM
He reached the final of the Tallahassee Challenger without losing a set! :yeah:
He plays De Voest in the final.

04-07-2007, 08:51 PM
He beat De Voest 6-1 6-4 in the final :yeah:
Back into the top 200 :bounce:

04-15-2007, 07:59 PM
And now he won the challenger of Mexico City! 15 wins in a row! Nice... :)

congrats! :)

05-06-2007, 02:36 PM
Keep it up Jo :D

05-08-2007, 06:47 AM
In l'Équipe today, he won't play Roland-Garros! :(

He’s had so many injuries in the past 2 years, he doesn’t feel ready yet for 5 sets matches. He realized that at the AO. And everytime he tried to play on clay, he got injured (?). He feels better, but he’s still 'fragile'. That’s why he will skip Roland-Garros, he doesn’t want to waste a WC.
He will rest one week and start practicing for the grass season (with Surbiton, the qualies of the Queen’s and of Wimbledon).

I was so looking forward to see him play in Paris :sobbing:

:awww: If that's his own decision, I guess it's for the best

05-08-2007, 10:16 AM
i seem to recall he did the same thing last year

it's nice of him to say he didn't want to waste a wildcard...very selfless

05-08-2007, 05:41 PM
Last year he didn't play Roland because he was injuried....

And 2 years ago against Andy,.... he had injuried just he didn't be on his Top...

So I think it's a good choice...and very honnest...

Good preparation for grass Jo!

It's possible if you have question for Jo to ask him on his website...

05-27-2007, 07:38 PM
really a pity that he doesn't play RG, but maybe it's a wise decision

looking forward to see him kicking ass on English grass:D

05-29-2007, 03:01 PM
Since there's no Jo during RG, it's time to mention that he can be seen in this vid of "A day with Gaël Monfils" : :hearts:

06-02-2007, 03:41 PM
He's behind Eric Winogradsky (Patience's coach) watching Oliver's match against Nole on the Lenglen... The tv keeps showing him. Nice glasses!

Tsonga won his first round match in the Great Britain grass court challenger over Fred Niemeyer, 5-7, 6-3, 6-2. Next up, some guy ranked 1522 in the world, who just beat Sam Querrey.

Jo-Wilfried won his 2nd round match in Suburbiton, Great Britain over Jim May 6-3, 7-5. Next up Alejandro Falla in the quarters.

06-07-2007, 06:02 PM
Jo can do well on grass, he won the Nottingham challenger back in 2004, but Falla wil be a difficult test that's for sure, his first real test this week  Good luck to him!

06-08-2007, 05:48 PM
He beat Falla 6-3 7-6 :yeah:
Guccione in the semi next, will be even tougher. Good luck Jo!

06-08-2007, 07:26 PM
Too bad that he didn't get a wilcard for Queens, he will probably have a week off to prepare for Wimbledon quallies. Does have a chance for a Wimbledon WC if he wins Surbiton?

06-08-2007, 09:20 PM
Saturday 9 June

Queens Qualifications

10:00 Tsonga vs. Goodall

06-09-2007, 12:49 PM
That would be incredible :haha:

06-09-2007, 01:44 PM
Apparently he lost the 1st set to Guccione, so hopefully he'll just tank now and concentrate on qualifying for Queen's.

Jo beat Kristian Pless (7-6(2), 6-0) first round at Queens, next he's got Hewitt. I think Jo has a chance there.

06-12-2007, 02:51 PM
With all the momentum he's riding, I think he will give Hewitt a tough match, should be a good one :yeah:

06-12-2007, 10:13 PM
Jo is now 21-3 on grass in his career

Should be a tight match with Hewitt, hopefully Jo can pull the upset off.

I just hope now the AELTC make the correct decision, so he can have some rest before attacking the Wimbledon main draw.

06-14-2007, 01:51 PM
Too bad he couldn't beat Cilic again. But he deserves rest. ;)

Jo plays fellow frenchman Julien Benneateau in round 1 tommorow at Wimbledon, and with the withdrawl of Murray the winner of Kim/Lapentti is in round 2 so this can be a very good Wimbledon if Jo plays his cards right.

First things first, beat Julien :D

Allez Jo :D

06-26-2007, 01:30 PM
He beat Julien 7-6 7-5 6-4 :woohoo:

Very close match and it was a werid one with a tons of breaks

But nevertheless Jo is through and he gets an easy match next, the winner of Lapentti or Kim who are currently battling in a 5 set match. I have a feeling Jo is going to do great things at Wimbledon this year with his draw :D

Allez Jo :D

06-26-2007, 02:51 PM
Nicely done :yeah:

What a choke from Benneteau 4-0 up in the second though. :o

06-28-2007, 01:11 PM

06-29-2007, 12:20 AM
I can see him making the QF (I think he can beat Lopez and I am not convinced Gasquet is in top form)...let's hope it happens. That would DEFINITELY put him on the map as a top player.

Yeah, but the only thing is that most of the entry lists are out all the way up to Montreal or so and he is not really there, and next week he is going to play a challanger on clay :tape:

I'm not sure whats going to happen with him throughout the summer maybe he will try to get some WC's? but after the USO he should have a huge end of the year indoors.

07-30-2007, 09:05 PM
He decided to skip the Washington qualies to keep practicing in Paris and will be back for the Montreal qualies. He should be well rested. ^^
His ranking won't be a problem from now on, he'll probably enter the MD of New Heaven, he's #3 on the alternates list.

He answered a lot of questions on his website:
The part about the training with Nadal is interesting.

08-01-2007, 04:06 PM
Grrr, he pulled out of the Montreal qualies...

08-01-2007, 06:34 PM
Damn :(

08-01-2007, 06:34 PM
I was just going to post guys know why?

08-02-2007, 08:31 AM
It's his back, again...
Nothing serious, he says, he should play in Cincy, but he doesn't want to take any risk.

08-09-2007, 01:59 PM
He's also pulled out of Cincy.

08-11-2007, 05:19 AM
when will he play again?! Is the back injury serious or does he simply want to save himself for the USO?

08-12-2007, 08:59 AM
According to L’Équipe today, he is practicing in the Bronx at the moment to get ready for New Heaven and then the USO. His back still is hurting a little bit, Wino says, so they are being cautious and decided to not play Cincy.

08-15-2007, 06:31 PM
You could ask question about Jo on his site

Just wanted to say that he has been practicing in the Bronx. He's been there all week so far and he's hitting with Olivier Patience mainly. My friend and I asked to take a picture with him and he was so nice. I think I was one of the only people to recognize him  My friend and Jo Me and him

Its hard to get photos of him practicing through the fence and plus he's usually on the 3rd court in so its too far away :)

08-19-2007, 02:13 AM
Is Jo-Jo continuing having problems with his back???

tomorrow he plays vs Del Potro at New Haven 1st round

Fight JO!!!! :armed: :fiery:

08-19-2007, 01:53 PM
I have been waiting for Jo all summer, the time has finally come I think Del Potro is a good matchup for him if Jo serves and volleyes well Del Potro will have trouble I hope the back is ok

Allez Jo :D

08-20-2007, 10:19 PM
Well he lost in 3 sets but judging from the SB it seemed a really hard fought match, both players saved a lot of BPs until Jo was the first one to crack and got broken in the 7th game of the deciding set. He put up a good fight considering he can't have been 100% fit, I just hope his back is fine now and he gets a kind draw in New York.

08-21-2007, 05:29 AM
he had really chances to win....
he converted 1/9 Bpoints..... that was the key of the match probably....

08-29-2007, 06:52 PM
Jo has just won his first round match 7/5 6/1 6/3 :)

08-30-2007, 09:03 AM

Semi finals against Nadal, I know he lost in the USO but I like the matchup, if he keeps his nerves straight there is no doubt he can win.

Go Jo! :D

01-22-2008, 12:41 PM

what a match from jo!he beat youzhni 7-5 6-0 7-6(6) and reach SF of a slam for the first time of his carreer.
Stunning performance, faced 00 BP on his serve, pure control and motivation. He really has nerves of steel.Congrats to jo,he made me a real fan(I already liked him, ffollowed his results but never really watch type of quality match from him.Great news for the french tennis, great personality,I love:hearts:

would be tough against nadal cause he run after every ball,Jo had some problems in that third set,he was running so much, many battles from the back of the court.Dont think its a good idea to challenge nadal from behind,he must keepplaying hisown game, the same quality of serve(its so important)and be agressive with his big forehand.

Tough but not impossible.Allez Jo,do your best!:clap2::clap2::clap2::yeah:

So great that he is having results like this after all the bad luck he had earlier in his career. I really hope he doesn't have a mental letdown against Nadal, and just goes out there with nothing to lose and swings freely.

01-22-2008, 07:56 PM
Jo :yeah: I only watched the tiebreak, in which I hear his level had dropped. Too bad I didn't see him at his best. Good luck against Nadal.

01-22-2008, 11:32 PM
I was just reading the first page of this thread when we were all talking about him playing challengers, and now he's in the semis of a Slam!!!! Well done JoJo, he is playing out of his mind. I watched his match with Youzhny yesterday and he was playing like a top 5 player. Can't wait for the match with Rafa!!!

01-22-2008, 11:37 PM
i agree, jo jo really played like he would be in the top 10, if not top 5, within the next 18 months or so. He had really good shot selection and played smart on the important points. A lot of players who have been around for 5 or 10 years arent even to do that now. congrats- i think he'll give rafa a run for his money!

01-23-2008, 06:10 AM

Unbelievable play,congrats to him:yeah:

01-24-2008, 10:23 AM
Too me, his wins over Youhzny, Gasquet and Murray were all more impressive, Nadal is a serious hard court mug :D

But the shots he was making + the serving + the volleying today was simply amazing, Nadal did not play bad at all, Jo just killed him!

01-24-2008, 10:47 AM

Fantastic stuff. It would be great fun I think if he could actually win the title- would be a bit like Guga having his first title be a grand slam.

And boy- he has really become so much more buff than last year.
